Well done bob try turning a three sided pen, i do it all the time in a engineering lathe the results are mind blowing. keep going. from an old engineer here in the UK for the past 65 years. there is an old saying, you can never stop learning, by the time you have learnt it all it is to late anyway. so keep learning and you will be OK. good luck.

hello where do you buy the inserts? thanks
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
Hello, I wasn’t sure what your meant by inserts. Do you mean the long tube? If so, I purchase the 10” tubes in packs of 10 from www.pennstateind.com and cut them to 4 1/4” to make these modified pens. Regards, Bob

Hey Bob, I am interested in finding out where you found the longer drill bits you use.
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
Hello Brad, The bit is from penn state and it’s the PK-7mm. Regards, Bob

Sorry to be a bother but, do you know the length of the bit?
@pajonate6 жыл бұрын
I think Bob is talking about this one. www.pennstateind.com/store/PK-7MM.html 5.6" long
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
No bother at all Brad, The bit is 5 3/8” long. Regards, Bob

You make everything look so easy. Great job, beautiful blank! What pencil kit is this, lead size? On your other channel you had mentioned plans for a pen with 3 different drill bits, that is something different correct? Always looking for a "good" mechanical pencil. Thank you for all your videos have learned so much!
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
Hello John, This pen uses .07 mm lead. The other pen does not use this kit. Regards, Bob

Bob, new to pen turning and I have learned quite a bit from watching your videos. Question, did you drill the pen blank on your drill press or lathe using pen jaws? In your opinion which is best? I attempted drilling a blank for a seam ripper the other day on my drill press, however the hole went off center. Any thoughts on way that occurred? I know the drill press table was square to the bit. I did drill slow and extracted the bit multiple times to remove the shavings. Thoughts?
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
I drill both ways but my preference is the drill press. It’s quicker. I use a machinist square to square the table with the bit. Regards, Bob
@philwalmsley11166 жыл бұрын
RJBWoodTurner Happy Easter! Thanks for the reply Bob. I’ll recheck the drill press table to ensure it is square. Hopefully that will be my issue. If not I’ll have to troubleshoot further. I guess it could also be I am going to fast or applying to much pressure when drilling. BTW, I was drilling a piece of zebra wood. May be the grain pattern caused the drill bit to wonder.
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
Zebra can be tough to drill. Hopefully you get this one figured out.
@lawrencelunsford60286 жыл бұрын
Nice work Bob! Where did you get the drill bit to drill the full blank? Drill press or lathe? I've been wanting to do a modified slimline, but my current bit isn't long enough. Thanks! :)
@RJBWoodTurner6 жыл бұрын
Hello Lawrence, I got the bit from PSI. Its PK-7mm. I used a drill press but drilling on a lathe would work just as well. Regards, Bob

@stuartmiles13016 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob can't find any way of contacting you other than here. I'm kinda new to turning although I've watched my father for years. I was in a bric-a-brac store here in England the other day and saw a job lot of snooker and pool cues as they are made of ash and were only a pound £1 each I bought them thinking I might be able to use them as pen blanks. What are your thoughts on this? Will it be difficult to drill them for tubes do you think? Starting to wonder if what I thought was a really good way of getting cheap blanks was or not 😟

Thanks Bob, Great pencil. I have a question. I am new at wood turning and have a Turncrafter similar to yours. How often should I lubricate the bearings, and do you have any tips on the best way to maintain it? Thanks again

Hello Wayne, I haven’t had this one that long so I haven’t done anything to it. I wonder if emailing ThenCrafter from the web if they could help.

Question 1. Have you ever turned a pen out of wood and acrylic? Question 2. Whats a good price on selling pens?
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
I have turned hybrid pens, wood that has acrylic with it. Check out www.pennstateind.com. They offer a high, low and mid range selling price for every pen kit they sell it’s a good starting place. Regards, Bob
@federicomartinez8305 жыл бұрын
When finishing a hybrid pen what steps do you use?
@federicomartinez8305 жыл бұрын
I've seen other pen makers use car polish on acrylic pen. Is that better? Or is it better to use a plastic polish?
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
Sand from 120 thru 600 then micro mesh. I use C/A as a finish once the blank is thoroughly dry.
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
Only use it after you apply the C/A finish. It will drain natural wood if it’s not protected.
