"Dumb Dumb isn't just Kpop at it's most cognizant and audacious, it's the genre's untouchable masterpiece." - Billboard. And "One of These Nights" is the most beautiful song ever written in Kpop. And I'll fight anyone who says differently. While the lyrics are based on a Korean fairy tale, ( your basic "star crossed lovers" story ) the video is unquestionably a tribute to the victims of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. Although never confirmed by SM, there are WAY to many references to ignore.

One of these nights is a tribute to the victims of Sewol tragedy. You should definitely check out the lyrics, it's so heartbreaking. Thank you for the video!
@DoubleMonoLR Жыл бұрын
The video *may* well be(at least in part/combination), but the song definitely isn't - it's about the folk talk of Chilseok, hence the use of '7/7' in the title and elsewhere, which is the date of the Chilseok festival. The lyrics directly relate to the tale. The video also matches this tale(especially the aspects the song focuses on), which has forced separation/longing, sadness, water, rain, stars, a boat, etc as major themes in the tale. The members themselves didn't seem to associate it at all with the Sewol, as they were joking around & teasing each other while watching the music video.
@Bruh-cg9yt3 жыл бұрын
You need to read this❗️ The theory on One of these nights is that the song is a tribute to the Sewol Ferry Incident. Which happened back in 2014. Where group of students were going on a school trip to Jeju Island. Unfortunately the ferry flipped over and over 250 students died due to negligence. While the Captain and several crew members abandoned the ship. Only 172 out of 476 passengers survived. Throughout the whole music video there were several indications it was related to the incident. For instance the crew members of the Ferry told the students to stay put and that they would be rescued. In the music video Seulgi is looking out the keyhole realizing the truth. She tries to escape but she's trapped from the water the indicating the students could have been saved. Irene sitting symbolizes the students who listened and waited to be rescued. Joy climbing the ladder symbolizes the survivors. The scene where Yeri was asleep in the boat while water started to fill it. Indicates the students who were sleeping while the ferry was sinking. The scene where Seulgi opens up the window while Wendy is standing in the rain. And she's seen crying in the window symbolizes it was already too late to save her. Continuing on Seulgi could have escaped since she knew the truth. But unfortunately the hallways of the ferry start to fill up with water. As Seulgi opens up the door where it shows the members all dress in white growns. Symbolizes that she opening the door to heaven where all the other members except Joy are waiting for her. At the end of the music video where cloud appears. ❗️The moon behind cloud signifies the Lunar Calendar. One these nights was released on March 17th, 2016. Which connects to the Lunar date of the Sewol Ferry Incident. Sorry for the whole essay.❗️

2:59 It's Joy again! I love both of these songs so so much! Dumb Dumb is such a bop, it has strong elements of western female-lead songs (especially the beginning vocals remind me of Jessi's Bang Bang), but it still has that fun edge and I always love when they used their voices as part of the beat! And One Of These Nights is simply beautiful, especially live! The corresponding albums are clear representations of their two sides: The Red is filled with fun upbeat tracks and such a strong outing for a first full-length album. But it's the following mini album The Velvet, which consists entirely of ballads/slow r&b tracks, that put them on the map as artists and not only idols. It's so uncommon for idols groups to put out slow songs or ballads (besides the cliché christmas ballads of cause) and the girls were pretty overwhelmed by the success of OOTN. Seulgi cried so much, when they won the first place on a music show with the song! And yeah, the following title tracks aren't as distinctly opposing anymore. The next three are more red, while Peek-a-Boo is bit of a mix and after Bad Boy all the tracks have the "Red Velvet" stamp - meaning they feature amazing vocals and are catchy af, regardless of their genre or redness/velvetness. For guides I really like the (un)helpful Guide by arystocats_ (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGmnoKmlodKpg5Y) It's from the Psycho era, so not totally up-to-date, but facts are facts and it shows off the members well.

The symbolism in this MV is crazy💔💔 Red Velvet the best girl group in 3th generation - Wendy in the corridor with Seulgi looking through the keyhole representing the lives that were trapped in the ferry - Seulgi walking out of the corridor and being parralel with the water because the ferry tipped before sinking - the ladder joy is on with the water below her - the tea because students said they were eating soup and noticed the soup was tilted - the unknowing of which way is up vs down - the way the girls are sitting around a table with one another because the survivors said the last thing they did before the panic was eating lunch with their friends - the lights turning off as seulgi walks back into the corridor and the most poignant symbolism is regarding yeri 1. the cover of the velvet album has yeri's face blurred because she was the same age as the students in the sewol ferry disaster ... 2. yeri being in a boat lying down 3. the boat being filled with water as yeri seems to be asleep most of the people on the ferry were school aged kids the same age as yeri and i think the use of yeri to display the disaster makes it even more emotional repost of a comment in the actual video which I think is very interesting it

Dumb Dumb is such a fun song, and a trippy mv. That was Joy... again, I think we might have a bias here it's been too many times now! OOTN is stunningly beautiful and criminally underrated. RV still stretch their wings in terms of range of styles now, but it's less of a dichotomy of strictly red/velvet like it was in their early years. I can't remember if you've said you know them but another girl group that you might enjoy someday is Mamamoo, also a very vocally strong group (some might say the strongest but that might be blasphemous to say on a RV reaction haha)

I feel like Dumb Dumb is one of the most perfect iconic examples of a Red Velvet song that is red (bright, poppy, upbeat) but clearly shows their R&B influences still with the vocals and the bass and the vibe. I think it's still considered a red song due to it not having the mature and soulful elements, but I love that you can usually hear the R&B elements in almost any Red Velvet song. The horns also just kill me in that song. "Unexpected bridge" - Red Velvet tagline haha :D One of These Nights... I cry or come near to it every time. It's so stunning and the meaning just kills me.

sometimes yes but often no. KPOP videos don't have to be videos of the song. Some groups they never are. My favorite example of this is from a subunit called Orange Caramel. The video features a little girl camplin in the living room. She falls asleeep while reading a fairy tale book and dreams she is touring the fairy tales following the group. She just catches up with them and starts sing and dancing with them and she wakes up. The lyrics are about the horror of falling in love and being stuck with just one guy.The lyrics warn that love clouds your mind and makes it hard to breathe. Love is a disease like asthma. Some groups the video makes perfect sense if you know the lyrics but without the lyrics, not so much.Sometimes the video really is the song in picture form but often it isn't When you get to it. know that Really Bad Boy and Bad Boy aren't really connected at all and you should not skip RBB.
