You can make a gap too small for cave spiders by using sideways stairs, chests are slightly smaller than a full block, as are path blocks, so you can attack through the tiny gaps.

For anyone struggling with defense in the early game, you can make a shield out of wood that’s usable from the very beginning even without any levels in defense. It massively helps for those annoying aimbot skeletons before you can get decent armor
