To put the story simply, HL2 is the sequel for HL1... you play as gordon freeman for both and in HL1 you conduct an experiment to study crystals from another relm called Xen. During the experiment you open a portal letting in the Xen population. HL1 basically is just you escaping Black Mesa fighting the Xen forces and the US military sent to cover up the experiment. You also end up going to Xen to kill the Nihilanth. A large alien queen that enslaved the Vortigaunts (the lightning shooting guys with the red Eye in their face). After doing that the Gman (some super natural buisnessman on orders to cause the Invasion of earth and ensure a certain outcome for his employers. For which he grabs Gordon Freeman as a "valuable asset" he can control to obtain certain outcome, he also did this to Calhoon and a few others, the US soldier from the Opposing Force side game to HL1) captures you and seals you away, assuming in cryo, for an unknown amount of time untill he releases you into HL2... HL2 takes place after the Black Mesa incident for which its revealed that another alien force has invaded and taken over earth, destroying 70%ish of the worlds population within the first few days your goal is to fight back against the Combine by helping the resistance and the Vortigaunts whom now worship/praise Freeman for destroying the Nihilanth, the queen that enslaved their race and made them invade earth. Barney is the Black Mesa security gaurd you play as in Half Life 1's Blue Shift side game whom escaped the facility with some scientists, one being Dr Kleiner and started to rebuild some of the experiments and systems from the Black Mesa facility such as the teleporters to be able to cercomvent the Combine. Eli Vance is one of the scientists in the early parts of Half Life 1 immidietly after the incedent thats standing next to a seated scientist whos unable to move, Eli is the scientist that told you to go get help and "tell someone were stranded down here". Mossman is just another scientist that kinda faught for the position that Gordon Freeman held to be able to cunduct the experiment, she somewhat idolizes Freeman but shes jealous that she wasnt the one in the test chamber in Half Life 1. As for Alyx, shes just Eli's Daughter who was very young around the time of the incident of Half Life 1. and Wallace Breen is the gentleman you see on the tv screens, hes the Humans "representative" to the Combine and is basically the diplomat to convey their orders. Theres a bit more of a rabbit hole to the story of Half Life but this is the bare bone basics pretty much.

The game is 'Synergy' and its very fun you play through all of Half Life and or the episodes of it with up to by default 32 people but some servers boost that to 64, during a rebel rush event it goes to 100 in some servers
