The joke is that Joke is showing those critics that “ Sure I can rap fast and switch up the flow, but, also like you, I can make rap that doesn’t even make sense; it’s gibberish or mumble-mouthed.” He’s brilliant!

tbh its a big misinterpretation among the fandom that joke is gibberish. yes, it doesn't have a cohesive message like his usual songs because it's only goal is to be a diss track. However, the entire point of joke is that "I can rap fast as well without a cohesive message, but I can do it with better wordplay, cadence and flow." Joke is literally full of wordplay, amazing flow and cadence. so its not just about dissing people who rap fast without any subject but it's his way of flexing that he can do that as well but BETTER than they ever could.

Joke is particularly a response to some haters just to show them that yes he can rap fast and better than them those who were speaking ill about him but Rm main focus is always on the motive of the lyrics, the thoughts that needs to be expressed not just rapping fast with any lyrical wordplay makes you a good rapper.. so to make them understand/ show to them , he just rap in here with using meaningless / nonsense (joke) lyrics to show them his speed and taught them that yes he can rap like this with using not lyrically maintained Wordplay as such others rappers who try to do this for show off, it was a slap to them and he said at the end of song- hit me.. means give response now.. but no one did .!!! HE'S THAT IMPRESSIVE 🔥🔥🔥* To explain why RM made this song : So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy.. *Joke is an intelligent sattire for people who think rapping fast without any meaningful lyrics and flow is cool or good.* The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape. but simply the other rappers are making fun of him because he can't rap fast and only focus on lyricism which is why he made this song for them. he said "hit me" at the end to allow others to diss him again. but nobody did anything yet. He has been a rapper since he was 13 years old. he is already famous among underground rappers at the age of 15. he is even feared by other rappers because of his amazing talent. RM is very smart so the wordplay is wide. the example is in the song "ddaeng" he made 7 wordplay only from the word "ddaeng"

A few things: 1. Birthday rap? Bars! 2. It’s not that RM does it effortlessly. I think it actually does cost him quite a bit of effort. It’s that he does it flawlessly. And I can only imagine how much he has to put in to get such a near perfect output. 3. What he actually said, was that RM could stand for a lot of things, Real Me for example. So it’s not that RM means Real Me, it’s that it could stand for Real Me or anything else that fits his mood or situation. Meanwhile, he’s just RM except to a few of his band mates who continue to call him Rapmon. Which is probably like how my mom, whose name is Susan, really hates it when her cousins call her Sue but doesn’t do anything about it because she knows it’s just affectionate teasing. 4. I just want to clarify that the lyrics here aren't really "nonsense lyrics" (idk why this term gets thrown around), but Joon says that the lyrics in 'Joke' aren't as deep, or the main focus, like his usual brand of lyrics in his songs. Joon says this abt the song: "RM: 'Joke' is a song whose lyrics were written with a stream of consciousness. That's why the title is called 'Joke' as well. *There's nothing hidden behind the lyrics. It's 500% for the auditory pleasure of rap songs. Since the other songs have messages or emotions placed into them, I felt that it was necessary to add in a refreshing song without any thoughts.* I put in a lot of what I believe are rap 'skills'." He just means that this is just a diss track to his haters and that's it. But he's able to make a track that focuses primarily on technique rather than the content of the lyrics, yet that he still manages to include incredible wordplay is also part of the "joke." It's like saying he can do what his haters (other so called rappers) can do, but he can do it better and without any real effort on his part.

What RM puts out is never completely devoid of meaning, this song included. RM himself might call it "nonsense" but I think the whole piece is extremely clever and it lands with real impact - which goes to show it wasn't just empty fluff. I love RM's mind, and I loved this reaction! Most of his other solos so far have come from a more mellow, poetic place. He hasn't really put out solo work that's spitting like he does here. I kind of think his next (technically first solo album, and not a mixtape like his past two) will continue along the more poetic and thoughtful (read: slower/laidback) vein, but who knows. Would love to hear him spit like this again as, like you said, a now fully-grown man (but still oh so young). Oh, one more thing: would love a reaction to RM's "Do You" from 2015. Has MV (with no captions though). That song also has attitude.

Wow, nice rap for RM’s birthday! I love Joke, it’s great at so many levels. Lots of other commenters have done a great job providing the history of the song, so I’ll just say that one thing I love about RM (and BTS’s) music is that one can go deep with the lyrics, one can admire the beauty of his flows, one can be astounded by his word play, love his messages, and on and on, but beyond that, one can always just listen to the music and, not thinking too much about anything else, just enjoy it and feel blessed. That’s a level of skill that puts RM and BTS in the god tier for me.

This was as usual, an awesome reaction. I am RM biased. His skills as a true hip hop artist, rap artist pulled me in and I’ve been an ARMY since. I don't know if I could think of a better KZbin video for his birthday than this. If RM hears about Jordan's birthday rap I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to watch this video. He's a lyrical genius and is now a Grammy nominated lyricist for Butter. On the survival show I-Land in 2020 BTS made an appearance and when answering questions that the trainees had they said "the leader has the most responsibility and doesn't get anything for it." RM has also stated that he changed his stage name to RM because he outgrew Rap Monster and RM can stand for anything, Real Me was an example he really liked that was given. He's able to lead BTS so well for so many reasons and has done an incredible job with all the responsibility that comes with the role. I can't wait to see you react to more of his music in the future. I have a feeling that both of you will really like his second mixtape Mono. If you have Vlive then you might be able to find a livestream of RM reviewing albums and explaining songs, his inspiration, etc. He's really good at using songs to give a message, sometimes deeper than you realize when you first hear a song.

I'm so exited for this reaction but hope you know you won't find RMs smart lyricism in this song. He made it as an JOKE for those who though repping fast only was a flex. He says here that he can too write nonsense lyrics and rap fast with several flow changes better then them but they can't write poetry like he do. Just to add about what was happening in the video- RM is the asylum patient but he is also the one who is administering the medicine and he is also the security guard locking him in. This is definitely a fav of Namjoon. I implore you to check out The Cyphers. Specifically Cypher pt2. :Triptych. It is 100 % a clap back. But the whole rap line is on fire. Both Rm and Suga have a segment of flow where I was really trying to see if they were breathing and I’m about 98 that they weren’t. You’ve got straight dis, symbolic dis, petty dis, and it’s all beautiful. Its my hype song. BUT, there are 4 Cyphers and all of them are complete fire, and they each show growth as BTS rap line grows. I would love to see how you guys analyze this. I’m certain you won’t be disappointed! Joke is such a good song. Like it's soo genius. Namjoon is extremely talented, and you know what, I just thought about this, but this song just makes me proud of Namjoon. He was two years in the game (publicly), which is still fairly new (kind of), and he was young, and he still had enough courage to take hate and not let it get to him or discourage him but used it as motivation to show his skills AND snapback in such a clever way. Like if I was his haters, Joke would shut me right on up. I'd never hate on him again. The man demanded his respect and showed that he deserves it and is highly skilled through a 'senseless but meaningful' hit. Come on, genius!

I love your shocked faces when listening to this. This a diss track to all the haters that critized him for leaving the underground rap scene and joining a idol group. They said he joined because he couldn't rap or that his rap skills were poor. He changed his flow over 8 times and his word play is amazing. The video represents his different sides. The crazy side meaning his flow changes and speed. The other side, the guard, meaning his controlled side meaning his lyrics and word play. He is a genius. You should listen to the rap lines Cypher series and then see the live medley.

I love that you watched it twice. No one watches this video one time. Everyone has to watch it atleast twice😆 joonie chose violence in that track. Also, it's always refreshing to see reactors reacting to "joke". Joonie is a genius lyricist and has a very versatile flow style. He was famous in the underground rap scene wayy before BTS started, and some "rappers" tend to forget that and underestimates him.. I also think that's why BTS rapline is one of the best, if not the best rapline out of all kpop. They're so unique individually but at the same time work so well together.
