This is what RM said about the song: said, “‘Joke’ is a song that I wrote the lyrics using stream of consciousness. That’s why the title is ‘Joke.’ There’s nothing hidden in the lyrics, and the song is 500% for the auditory pleasure. I felt a necessity of a song that refreshes the mood without any particular meaning since I’ve included messages and sentiments in other songs. I included what I think are the ‘skills’ of rapping.”

*9 flows, no chorus, straight bars!* *Joke is a Masterpiece! BTW he has an IQ of 148 and you'll see why his lyrics always have double meanings. HE'S THAT IMPRESSIVE 🔥🔥🔥* To explain why RM made this song : So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy.. *Joke is an intelligent sattire for people who think rapping fast without any meaningful lyrics and flow is cool or good.* The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape. but simply the other rappers are making fun of him because he can't rap fast and only focus on lyricism which is why he made this song for them. he said "hit me" at the end to allow others to diss him again. but nobody did anything yet. King's shit. fun fact: RM was at one point one of the top students in all South Korea, boy is a GENIUS... *In short, RM GENIUS SONGWRITER OF THE CENTURY.* His rap is not only skillful but extremely intelligent. Makes me wish I knew Korean to fully understand all the wordplay and references.

Unnie is not a bad word, it really just means older sister. The way he is using it is, closer to calling a guy a "sissy" or a woman. He's questioning the guys masculinity. Note (from doolsetbangtan):One particular line “이건 의미없는 말놀이 (This is a meaningless wordplay)” sums up the song pretty well. Apart from it being a message to haters (who believe they are the real rappers and ‘idol rappers’ are fake, in particular), the song is comprised of wordplays with a heavy presence of end rhymes and lines that are not necessarily connected through each other in terms of their meaning. The track really showcases his wordplay ability and the technical aspects of his rapping skills. In his 2015 interview with HIPHOPPLAYA, he said, “‘Joke’ is a song that I wrote the lyrics using stream of consciousness. That’s why the title is ‘Joke.’ There’s nothing hidden in the lyrics, and the song is 500% for the auditory pleasure. I felt a necessity of a song that refreshes the mood without any particular meaning since I’ve included messages and sentiments in other songs. I included what I think are the ‘skills’ of rapping.” Original Track: Oh My Darling by Run The Jewels (RM and Suga’s first mixtape used a lot of sample just a heads up) My interpretation: Pretty much he got a lot of hate saying he can’t rap and has bad lyrics and terrible flow, when he joined to be part of a K-pop group. He made this song basically full of wordplays and flow. Basically saying this is meaningless but I am better than you. “Hit me” basically saying try me.

Let me explain: 1) *The lyrics of Joke are NOT nonesense.* There's only a couple of lines that are him imitating people who say nonesense, the rest of the lyrics DO MAKE SENSE. 2) This song has a lot of references and it is focused on WORD PLAY though. It's not one of his super philosophical tracks. 3) The message isn't complicated: RM is responding to rappers who believe rap is only about having a fast flow, acting cool and agressive, and who don't care about writing decent lyrics and write bullshit or just empty or unauthentic stuff... And then turn to criticize those who are doing things in a different way, using superficial criteria, with a delusional sense of superiority. RM's main point is that "RAP IS ABOUT LYRICISM, WHAT YOU SAY AND HOW YOU SAY IT MATTERS". Speed is not the point, agression is not the point, those are just tools. 4) RM is simultaneously demonstrating how he CAN rap fast and with a "cool badass style" (if he wants), and declaring that lyricism and meaning is the heart of rap. Rhythm & Poetry = RAP. He's mocking rappers that are all about pretending, telling false stories about being poor or dangerous (when that's not their personal true experience), writing just about sex and drugs (with no variety in topics, repeating the same all the time). He's also changing his flow a lot on this song, I suppose to demonstrate his technical expertise. He's expressing his anger and his self-confidence. *The six bullets/snakes are BTS members, his team that has his back. It's probably also a Tupac reference. ** In very simple terms: "Sunbae" is your senior and "hoobae" is your junior. He's saying "I'm a better rapper than most of the rappers who are older or younger than me" (the ones who make fun of him for writing deep lyrics). ***The context is that he's responding to people who speak to him in an offensive way, who disrespect him. RM mixtape has a lot of hurt, anger, and despair. It's also a little bit of a satire, with the imitating. There's also a few tracks there that are really sad. And a couple that are hopeful. **Idk if people told you, but, all the beats in this mixtape are samples of songs RM was a fan of, he wrote over them... That's why it wasn't in all music platforms, bc of the samples. It was recorded back in 2014 and released on SoundCloud, in early 2015. *The unnie line can be interpreted in a few ways... What I understood is: unnie is how women call other women who are older than them... So, he's saying "girls call you unnie" as "you are so pathetic that women don't see you like a prospect, you are not man enough for them to see you as attractive or someone they want to pursue" (bc you're hateful, not smart and/or unskilled)... He's not saying "you're a woman" but rather "women know you ain't it".

The fan who requested it told us in our DM's. he said RM said in an interview that the song is nonsense with no deeper meaning to discover. When i was reading the lyrics as we watched i did not see that. It was weird that person told us that.
@lobaetoile8440 Жыл бұрын
@@MixItUpPodcast That person simply misunderstood his statement or saw it out of context, he did said that JOKE doesn't have a "deeper meaning", but Namjoon's standard for "a song with a deep meaning" is his usual writing style, which is known for being very poetic, philosophical and having multiple layers. He meant that the message of this song is more direct and simple. Plus, it's true that this song has a lot of sarcasm and jabs, it's a bragging dis-track, after all, but the lines are not nonesense, they make sense, he's just using a lot of slang. Also, he did wrote this with "stream of consciousness" which is a very spontaneous writing style (of course any good writer does have to edit that and summarize afterwards, etc)... And this is a style of writing he wasn't as good at before, he has improved on it. Mono has a lot of passages written as if the person is thinking in real time, and it conveys anxiety, overthinking, depression and intrusive thoughts very realistically.

It's interesting because the song does have meaning, but because of the way RM typically writes he doesn't see it as having meaning. Any other rapper would brag about how much meaning this song has because of the reasoning behind it and all of the wordplay. It's clearly a diss record and many lines individually have something ruthless to say. However RM is a poet at heart and his writing typically has more of a grand narrative or concept with meaning done in a different way. It makes sense why the one we call "the philosopher" would look at this and find it meaningless. Comparatively it could be seen that way. If it were truly meaningless it would be strings of words that don't say anything when put together. Instead each line says something plainly, it just may not always connect to the adjoining lines in that way. The message is very clearly "Fuck you, I'm a beast on the mic. You ain't shit compared to me and let me tell you why." Braggy RM is just as fun and deep or poppy RM.

@@cstrouts yes, they were all involved in production. They themselves produced their own songs. What i mean is making the beat of the song. Suga is the only member capable making his own beats. Its been said numerous times by the members themselves. Thats why his studio has a lot of equipments. If I'm not mistaken, when someone said "produce" a song, it means that person is the one who handles what kind of direction the song goes to. They don't necessarily work with the equipment. Usually they have sound engineers and mixed engineers. These people are the one who you work with and tell them what kind of sound you want to make. For example, the song Ddaeng. There was a short clip of the rapline working on the song. There was a moment where Jhope said to remove some effect on the beat, then said, "okay, now it sounds clean." Jhope wasn't the one who use the equipment to do this, thats the mixed engineer's job. But Jhope still help produce this song. However, the oriental instrumental beats that made Ddaeng, its been mentioned a few times that Suga was the one who made it. Sorry this is long. I just want to explain what I meant when I said Suga is the only one able to make his own beat. But all bts members have produced their own songs.
