What people don't realize is that she was an oustanding jazz singer, she did jazz first then branched out to the other genres. Her range and vocal promiscuity was phenomenal. No one (female) at the time could compare to her. No female (of this time) can compare to her either. She was music. May she forever RIP.

1-17 the runs in head voice, so incredible lol, I love her voice because it had limitless ability. Most people think she is a deep voice singer, but Phyllis had octaves, and she can sing in whistle register too lol, she can do exactly what she wants.

The sounds that came from that her were unimaginable to anything you've ever heard, almost scary. She went from RB, stage, rap, pop and could have done soulful country (move over Doll, Lionel Richie did it). Her range and vocal styles were unique. Phyllis IS ONE REAL DIVA, the rest are simply wannabees. She surpassed Ella, Dinah, Lena and the rest, setting a standard that is still unattainable. She's in a league of her own. Natural skills and great talent. Too bad she never recognized it.

This woman is one of the finest vocalists of all time. Just that good. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Beautiful woman, timeless, mammoth voice. Like Hathaway, her loss was a blow to music. We love you, forever.

Phyllis carried it like no other! Those two were like PB&J together! If only Phyllis continued to do Broadway, I think she would've found a great deal of success. But I imagine it would take an even greater toll on her because Broadway is no joke. Either way, she did that! Missing her to this day. R.I.P. my Queen!

It’s not a competition but Hinton could not keep up with Phyllis. I’m not trying to tear him down I’m just emphasizing how amazingly talented she was. And to be able to imitate “Satchmo” a.k.a Louis Armstrong they way that she did was phenomenal. She was spot on. The versatility that she showed in this video really exemplifies the gift and great talent that she was. R.I.P to the great Phyllis Hyman.

Phyllis was one in a billion, but no one could make her believe it. Her voice was in a word, spectacular. She could make any stage her own, and captivate you by her beauty and elegance. It doesn't make sense that such a talent, beauty, and an irrepressibly sultry instrument like hers, would be silenced so unexpectedly, and so sad.

I wish Phyllis Hyman-and others like her-could have had the chance to find a truly supportive society to live in-one that would fully appreciate her uniqueness and also offer positive alternatives to feeling lonely and misunderstood. In the early 80's I visited a meditation commune founded by the spiritual mystic Osho. This commune was dedicated to loving life, yourself and others and was truly a breakthrough experience for me. I received a new vision of life that has made it possible for me to begin to trust in myself again-and to feel that life is truly an incredible opportunity to become blissful. There is no need for sensitive and beautiful people like Phyllis Hyman to lose hope in life and commit suicide. A new approach to living-one that focuses on being happy and loving-instead of jealous and competitive-is the real alternative to suicide.
