Yeah. I tried a raspberry pi, it was an absolute nightmare to set up because it was so slow. I'd set it to extract a small rar file for whatever, and I'd have to leave it and come back on half an hour before it was finally done. Imagine every click taking that long. The raspberry pi is far too weak And once I had everything set up, I found out that retro pie is pretty terrible. At the moment anyway. It's got so much input lag that the game are unplayable So it was a fun experiment but I'm never using any raspberry pi based system again. I do not like Linux and how terribly annoying it is to do any basic thing in it Eventually I got a GPD XD+ android handheld (it's like a DS because it folds closed, but with one screen, and that screen is a touchscreen, and it has all the buttons a modern controller has like 4 shoulder buttons, 2 clickable analogue sticks etc). The GPD thing runs android. And I've tried everything else, and android is the best platform for emulation easily, if you're just after playing the games and you're not a TAS speedrunner or something. Unlike the PC emulators, android emulators are always being updated still. And the emulators generally have far more options than PC or retro pi ones do Oh and you can plug it into a TV via HDMI and sit back and use Bluetooth controllers with it. I've played multiplayer mario kart 64 on my TV using this thing. It makes it a really good compliment to my Switch, because it's both a handheld and a plug in console of a sort Retro pie might be fine for some people but I couldn't stand how much input lag it had and how difficult it was to do something basic, like say assign save state and load state as actions to certain buttons on a controller. You just couldn't do it. Every other emulator on every other platform you can do it, but not retro pie. Stuff like that, I can't be bothered with it. It's bad, right now

Being free from the usual emulator latency is a huge Mister plus for everyone who grew up with the real thing and got their brains programmed on fast machines.
@NirnBootMod3 жыл бұрын
That is one of the major benefits... but its also on par with real hardware, where software emulation is not. Jotego's arcade cores for example like capcom CPS are 44% more accurate than MAME. With that said, software emulation is great and it has the potential to one day be on par like FPGA in 10 or 20 years, maybe. Assuming the liberals don't destroy the planet by then.
@haraldhimmel56873 жыл бұрын
@@NirnBootMod The accuracy part is a little wonky though. Some of the cores (sadly not all) are very accurate but many of them often still differ somewhat and do not respond 100% accurate in every situation. Some also need some fixes that may not be present in the original system to play nice with modern hw. Overall it is a very exciting angle for retro systems, also because the hardware isn't set in stone and can receive upgrades but I feel that the "on par with real hardware" argument is a little overemphasized sometimes. VS emulation think its the other way round actually. Emulation should not be superior but it might take quite some time to get many cores on par with cycle accurate emulation. > Assuming the liberals don't destroy the planet by then. Ah yeah I heard they keep shoehorning their agenda into debates that have nothing to do with it.
@davidste603 жыл бұрын
@@blitzwing1 And even latency is not a total win for FPGA. On 16-bit systems like SNES a good "software" emulator can beat FPGA emulation and original hardware for latency, with the right setup and if that is even wanted. Or it can match them of course. A lot of SNES games have 2 or 3 frames of latency built in to the way they work, total accuracy will simply recreate that but an emulator with runahead can get around it. Of course it's not true to the original experience but it's a nice option to have. Then there is lagless vsync that can get very close to the latency of older systems that don't even buffer their frames.

@Viking_Cookie3 жыл бұрын
@@godslayer1415 No, they've designed an expansion board and a case. The expansion board has ram onboard, they've made it so you can remove the onboard ram and upgrade it if needed. This is a good solution as integrating the ram into the expansion board allows them to reduce the cost over buying both separately, and making sure it can be removed means you don't need to ditch the expansion board if the ram fails or needs to be upgraded. If you think they've only built a case then you should actually watch the video.

While it's true upgradeable RAM is a MiSTer thing, and everything from the SNAC connectors to the various video outputs can already be done with add on boards this is the first really easy plug and play solution with an all in one board that can do almost everything. A really cool board you made here ! Thanks for making the Mister project advance ! I'm really not a fan of the case though, but I know it's very hard to come with a design that is liked by most and still answers technical requirements (SD slots, controller swapping...). I hope you'll manage to make a matte plastic injection molded case instead of 3D printed ones. It'll look much more professional, but it's quite the investment...

Hi RMC, I have been subbed to your channel for a couple of years now and I have enjoyed many of your computer refurbs. I have just bought a 3D printed case with arcade style top notch parts, for a ultimate joystick, that I have always wanted for the 2600. The seller suggested the Mister project to me, and I in turn mentioned your channel to him. Dave suggested the makers for the main DE-10 that you mentioned, but I would rather buy the whole system from you, with the snap on mod for the 9 pin joystick port. I am disabled, so I dont have a lot of spare cash, the joystick at £30 was a huge deal for me, but after reviewing your videos on the Mister project, I feel its at a stage that is right for me. I would be grateful for details on how to buy the setup mentioned and how much it would cost. Initially I was put off, by how technical it was, but I dont rush into these things.

That should really help make the Mister easier for the average person to get started with, and much more convenient than the stack of boards. I will go so far as to say that looks amazing - Where do I sign up for one!

All you need to start off with the Mister is the DE10 Nano board, a ram module and an sd card, you don't need any extra boards if you just want to plug it into a tv with hdmi and play games.

Interesting as I've been thinking about getting into FPGA/MISTER, although the SCART location seems odd but I'm guessing it was the easiest way.

2nd question is one of custom cases - any chance of professionally printed options there for those without a printer at home? Different colours? Materials? Unique designs???
@TheRetroCollective3 жыл бұрын
We'll be releasing the files for anyone to use freely. Further down the line if this sells well and we have a userbase who really want it I'd be happy to run a Kickstarter to raise the funds for injection moulded shells.

Please sell the thermally sensitive 3D-printed case. That is really cool.
@RichRap3D3 жыл бұрын
@@YonezH It's mostly for testing thermal performance. Unfortunately these temperature sensitive additives and the UV sensitive filaments also wear out over a period of time and exposure to heat / UV - so it's not intended for long-term use. It is quite fun and you can always print a new one when it wears out.
