Can’t wait for the carb rebuild video! I have a 1995 50 hp Johnson that I’ve kept running on the back of its original 1995 Whaler. Great motor.

Michael, your concern about parts' availability translates that you have often worked on Mercury engines. Welcome to OMC whose parts are easy to identify and remain plentiful even on 40 years old models. Mounting those lower unit holders on trailer receivers is a fantastic idea and I'm adopting that design. I'm not too sure about the vise mounting because it will allow it to wobble a bit but that may be only a matter of personal preference. A super year 2023 to you Sir !

I have noticed the same thing. Johnsons and Evinrude's must have been crazy popular here in the mid west because there are plenty of them around here.

The early 50hp with the large gear case with the 12-32 gear ratio they used these thru 1975. 1976 thru 1988 used the smaller case 12-29 ratio. Try the 12 1/4x15 first. I rember you say that banana boat was heavy. The specs for the 50 hp show 11 3/4 x 17. On these early motors withe low ratio they would put these on heavy fiberglass boats.I don't remember the Dia of these large gear case props but they were huge.keep up the good work. Dave. .

I am doing the same thing with a prop. Ive taken my aluminum prop, straightened it out then took the aluminum brassing rod and fixed the ends then grounded it back to shape and balanced it. Going to see what rpms im getting with it, then will be looking for a stainless steel propeller for it. Since the aluminum flexs so when i go to a steel propeller ill drop down 1 or 2 pitch. Ill call the prop guy and talk with him to see what i will need in stainless.

I have heard it is not good to use synthetic gear oil in the drive, as it has the ability to hold water in suspension. Better to use regular gear oil. Any truth to that? Love your vids.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Great ! My Chinese presseure tester's weakest (aka least air thight ) part is the plastic threaded connector that screws in the engine's lower unit. Give us the good word Michael !
