The split gearbox o-ring of death. Make sure you use OEM. Part of the reason I moved to outboards. That red o-ring will cause many headaches. No cheating on that one!! Loving the Mercruiser stuff.

Michael just a suggestion for changing the oil the is a device that you attach to your drill and pump out the oil from oil pan. The device has a tube that goes into the dipstick and another one that will go into another bucket for the used oil. I hope this helps. Thanks Tim

Good tip! I actually have a pump for just such a thing, this one has room for a pan so that's what I used this go round, thanks for watching.

I use PVC PIPE 2.5” cut out 1/4 to 1/3 out ( enough to go over the ram ) raise all the way up then measure the length and cut PVC to fit and no need for the strap ! Usually the check valves start to wear out which causes the loss of pressure to hold the lower unit up . Or air in the line like brakes on a car . Remember that boat weighs a lot and a 165hp is doing great at 38mph ! I have a Crestliner by AMF Tri-hull if you want it , The Forester is gone ,my grandson gave it to his step dad .

My guess on the drooping issue. Emergency vent screw on pump isn't holding air pressure. If it was a hydraulic line, you'd be pissing fluid into the bilge.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina2 жыл бұрын
I'll look into that, Thanks for watching

Mike look art the spec for WOT it should be about 5200. You should prop to hit the WOT rpm.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina2 жыл бұрын
I have the spec book right in front of me and for the 165 hp WOT 3900-4300 rpm, you run this inline 6 at 5200rpm and it won't last too long. Thanks for watching.

Great video but you should not use grease on rubber, OMC recommends using dish soap (water soluble), grease will degrade the rubber.

I think an aluminum 17p would be better and rev around 4,200-4,500. I have a Merc 5.0 in a 20 ft and tried 19, 17, and a 15p 4 blade works best for me.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina The gurus say run at the TOP of the WOT range or you are overloading the engine and will have problems. I have seen two ranges, 4000 to 4500 and 3900 to 4300.

That is a replacement outdrive. Some get lots of use out of it, some not so much. Here are some calculations of RPM Propeller Pitch and slippage. A good fit prop should have about 10 to 15% slippage. The Original prop Engine RPM Gear Ratio Pitch MPH 100% MPH 52% 3900 1.65 17 62.8 34.5 The Alternate prop Engine RPM Gear Ratio Pitch MPH 100% MPH 55% 3900 1.65 20 77.6 38.8 So that combo you have is just stirring up a lot of water and not providing a lot of forward thrust. The pitch is far too great. You may even be cavitating with that much slippage. This combo is in the proper slippage range Engine RPM Gear Ratio Pitch MPH 100% MPH 85% 4300 1.65 13 52.9 45.0
