I am a new owner of the Fireface UCX II, and I must say that having never used one before, and after preparing for the arrival of the unit by watching the intro to Totalmix FX videos on the RME website, I learned enough to be up and recording as soon as I had the drivers installed. I'm Not sure what is so difficult here, especially if you have worked on consoles. Regarding headphones, I assume you are wanting more headphone outputs with no increase in cost. Personally, I would rather have line outs 3 - 8 than more headphone outputs. Headphone amps are cheap. Loopback is something I have only done basic testing with, but in my first test, having selected loopback on output 3 and 4 and setting up my DAW to record from input 3 and 4, I compared the levels displayed on output 3 and 4 on total mix with the DAW input meters. Levels were identical. So while I agree that it would be nice and more obvious to have the input 3 and 4 meters working, this limitation is one I can cope with. The levels do show on the output channel. Not a perfect test, but enough to show just how simple it is. So let me see, I can set loopback on a channel with the click of one button, read the output meters to set levels. OK, I need to remember the input channel is the same number as the output channel, but even my 70 year old brain can manage that. What's so hard? Oh, I love the flexibility. a powerful remote control console I can manage from my mic location without putting my guitar down, how cool. A lot less neck twisting than my SSL big Six. I realize we do not all see things the same way and experiences vary, but I like it.

I have the UAD Apollo Twin X and RME Babyface PRO FS, Let me tell you, Total mix is not user friendly. Took a while for me to get use to. Now I understand it. With UAD's console interface, wayyyy easier and user friendly. I love it. But other than that, to be honest in terms of sound quality and everything, this is going to be hard for some, but both are REAL good. I can't tell THAT much of a difference in sound quality between the two. So if anyone is interested in either, you can't go wrong. But just remember, RME are rock solid drivers and will work on almost any computer, plus it's bus powered so no extra giant plug.

I watched the RME totalmix video here and my prayer was answered! I've never been fully aware of how that Totalmix program works, but I apparently had an accident with it about a week ago.... I noticed that the sound of the speakers had become strange... just enough to notice it. As if it lacked low frequencies and somehow the sound was muffled. Probably the reason was some setting of the Totalmix program (Loopback!?) which I haven't been able to find out... Please, if anyone has information or tips on what I could do, I would be super grateful!

Thanks for your comment! As I said even top sound professionals at some point will face somthing that was not expected. I dont say that is bad card, but the control pannel is so overwhelming for 90% of the users. I own rme for maybe 15 years. Did I read the manual? Around 15 times. Results, still confuding sometimes.

you have to understand than rme functionalities is based on its internal fpga chip. how fpga works - this is a bunch of transistors which can be softwarely reconnected to get a specific functionalities. the advantage of it is that you can get any different hardware functionalities out of a single chip, the single chip can performe as a many different HARDWARE devices. but the other side is that you are little limited with what you can get out of it, the more you want the more you need, the art is to programm your limited harware connections inside your fpga chip to get a full functionalities. in goal of that you have to manage your strategy of fpga programming to build both a needed functinality and yet not to run out of fpga limitations so eventually rme gives you all the functionalities you'd needed works well yet in a weird form

Agreed with all your points. I'm arguably a power user of RME TotalMixFX. While from time to time if something is modified, I still cannot make every routing functional as I expect. And I still have to re-watch YT tutorials from time to time to get it work. My overall experience with some of the German UI/UX is anything but intuitive.

more headphone outputs ?? Totalmix FX weak point?? Just use the back line outs with an headphone amp ......Totalmix FX weak you surely don't know what you are talking about!!! If you are making a video about a product you should get familiar with it first!! It is so sad to see people spreading misinformation!! I came from a prism TITAN dante version THAT was a BIG headache (switched several times due to faulty units and software bugs).

Dude this guy is an idiot. How in the hell can you say rme is bad? Its better than apollo imo. The drivers are par to none for windows.

Wow - I have a Universal Audio Apollo x8 and I absolutely hate the mixing / console software. I wish it had a fraction of the functionality of Total Mix. You only have aux and cue mixes and you can't freely route your audio around - and don't even mention loopback functionality. Yes it is there but there is a LOT to be left desired. I'm actually considering switching to RME for TotalMix and its full routing flexibility as I'm super frustrated by the limitations of the Apollo.
@DaveDaves Жыл бұрын
I agree with almost all your points but I don't understand why, if you made this video 6 months ago, you're complaining about wanting dual headphones jacks? The Babyface Pro has 1/4" & 1/8" with matching impedance - much better than the situation of the "two" headphone jacks on my RME Babyface which are simply wired in parallel and not better than using a splitter. OMG LOOPBACK!? so frustrating! THis is one of the aspects of TotalMix FX I NEVER figured out. At this point I can do everyytihng I want to do in Totalmix FX other than that, I'm very comfortable and I love it. I can even deal w the matrix screen if needed. But yes when I started with TotalMix FX I was overwhelemed and very frustrated at how complicated everything is. What's the difference between a Snapshot or a Workspace (I know now, but then!~?). I still don't konw how the submix vs free routing works. But now that I'm accostomed to it, some of the things that bugged me like the FX bit you complain about , I can't think of a better way now.

I would like to completely ignore total mix and just use my DAW if possible. I don't see the point in duplicating resources. Total mix seems like my nightmare.
@valdir7426 Жыл бұрын
isn't there like a basic layout preset that does basically that? RME has a different approach than MOTU in this regard as MOTU has a separate mixer system but you can still access physical I/O from your software.
@jltbk542010 ай бұрын
You can access your physical outputs from your daw with rme. But trust me, if you take time to learn total mix you’ll find that it’s brilliant. It’s like a virtual patch bay
@draztiqmeshaz6226 Жыл бұрын
As per the mixer, yes it's hard to initially understand, it seems to be as simple as it can be given the flexibility it offers. It's like you're walking into a studio with a full-blown SSL and asking why they can't just make it look like your Mackie 16. Just because you do not use (or potentially understand the uses for) many of the different routing possibilities does not mean they are not necessary or overly complex. Ok back to your rant I guess...

Got my unit and the power delivery on my unit was abysmal. Like bad. It sounded bad. Noise floor, distortion in highs.. Feedback when off. Like honestly I don't understand how a device with such markup can even have these design flaws to begin with beyond the fact that I might have gotten unlucky.... Funny thing is if they cared enough to put a ground pin maybe that could have gone away with like half of the issues I mentioned... or maybe not. Regardless very disappointed...
