This is unbelievable! This problem happened to me -- I sent a vid to RME and they told me I'd have to ship the unit to them (in Germany!) to have it repaired (which you know would be a fortune). They wouldn't tell me if this was a common prob. Anyway, thank God I did not toss the unit. I ordered the capacitors per your link (that is awesome too!), but some of them are backordered. Hopefully not for long. Thanks for this!

You can also try calling and ask their service people for substitutes. That's the beauty of electronics! Glad you found it helpful. Cheers!

@@RaytownProductions Thanks -- I called them and they found a sub (otherwise I'd be waiting months!). I've taken a look and it was my C16 and C17 capacitors that went bad. I'll see how it goes replacing those, and if I don't screw them up, I might be brave enough to tackle the rest!

@@RaytownProductions Thanks! So I got in there and swapped the two problem capacitors -- I think it was the same two that went bad for you. I have all the parts to change the other capacitors, but I decided to stop at "fixed" and tuck the other capacitors away for that rainy day when the problem recurs. I am kind of a sloppy solderer, so I thought maybe I shouldn't mess with it beyond fixing the problem. But I did, and I thank you for the road map! I forgot the beer steps, but I will tip one while recording on my repaired UFX one of these days! Thanks again!

I'm in the middle of doing the same for an older unit, a FF800, which seems to have a very similar power supply board and identical molex connectors. I started with the smaller one and it would not yield until I was pulling so hard that the PC-mount receiver end just snapped off leaving the rivets in the PC board. I am hoping that I can get a satisfactory solution just soldering the wires to the points on the board. Tech support from RME was really quite good: the recommendation was a replacement PS board, which came with duplicate connectors already on it which was the reverse of what was in there, so I had to take one connector off and hand solder it anyway. They were very clear and patient on the phone as to how this should go.

Fantastic job. I would point out that usually when you are doing solder work you would add some solder to the iron tip itself before applying the tip. It transfers the heat a lot better and faster. It looked like the tip was bare when you applied it on the video. I'm thinking of picking up an old RME firewire interface so this was interesting to watch, as those caps would likely be Even OLDER than yours.

this is awesome! especially the mouser cart thing! thank you! do you remember if you sourced low ESR caps? i'm reading that's desired, but hard to sort their site for info. (i've already replaced the power supply with new. both on ufx and adi-8!) (and it's time again! the $140 replacements lasted way shorter than the original.. so breaking out the solder this time)

Hello from France. My poor old UFX has known the same fate as yours for a week. For the moment, this only happens when it is turned on, then stops after a few minutes. I will let the problem evolve for a few more weeks without touching, then think about tinkering myself by following your deep water dive of electronics under the microscope, or decide to send it in after-sales service, because I am really very bad at welding... And able to make it flame or break it completely. I know that they take around $400 for a repair at RME (France and Germany are not so far away). But we must add the shipping costs.

hello friend, could you help me regarding the purchase of an internal power supply RME (IMM-10602-37), do you know if there is any distribution of this part here in Brazil? I have a UFX just like yours.

Not to take anyone's soldering fun away, but what did you pay for the parts at Mouser? I just had my UFX+ PSU fail and replacement was $89.00. I was actually surprised at the price, expecting it to be a lot more.
