Very helpful; thank you. I think I finally understand this. FWIW I think I'd prefer to record the effected audio to a separate DAW track so I can tweak the blend later as the mix becomes more finalized. Thus no need to set up a loopback channel.

Did you watch the video? It literally explained all the steps you need: - patch a cable from RME analog output to the effect input - patch a cable from the effect output to RME input - in TotalMix, select the hardware output channel connected to the effect output, and raise the fader of the channel which you want to route to the effect - still in TotalMix, select the phones or main output, and raise the fader of the hardware input channel which is connected to the effect output

Inserts are for one specific channel and are in series. The send/return method is parallel and can have signal from ANY channel that has an aux send that is able to be routed to that channel.

I don't understand any of these videos. I can't see it explained how to set it up to monitor just the returned (FX) signal only. I have it I can play an uncompressed track in logic (bass or vocals etc), it goes out of Analogue 1 (XLR) into a compressor, back into line input (instrument 3), but I can hear both the dry signal playing in Logic plus the compressed signal, I just need to be able to hear the compressed signal for the few seconds or minutes while I'm dialing in the compressor settings. So it feels I need some kind of extra 'submix' or something in the control room, which only has, for example, the line ins feeding it, so I can only hear what's coming out of the 'line in', and not hear what is coming out of Logic (although obviously that still has to be playing and going out of the XLR AN1). All of these videos seem to have a different Totalmix setup which I can't equate with mine, and then they seem to reference things I can't understand.

Totalmix "tricky"to use with Cubase - to put it very mildly. I want to do something seemingly simple, which is to add an external Hardware insert to a track in Cubase. With any other interface it couldn't be more straightforward, but with an RME interface there seems no way to make the Steinberg routing work hand in hand with Total mix!

@dazeja Жыл бұрын
@@AxisChemicalsmake sure your “mix” on the effects unit is set to all wet. If you still get feedback then your fx unit doesn’t have true 100 percent wet setting. I have several pedals that do this. They allow some of the dry sound to come through. If that’s the case, then you have to turn down the dry signal at your main bus “only” in Totalmix . Don’t turn it down at the FX out channel of Totalmix, then you won’t get any signal.
@rkglpwy2 жыл бұрын
But no one uses Totalmix as a daw. Of course you won’t notice latency when you’re just sending one stereotrack. And for a mix it’s impossible to bounce return effects for every track. Using a hardware insert realtime in a daw still causes too much latency - any way around that?
@SB-wn2rd4 жыл бұрын
This is fine for time based effects like delays and reverb, but by coincidence I was experimenting with this myself earlier today and when for example using a distortion unit, the phasing between the dry and wet signal was noticeable enough to be annoying and I had to go back to using a hardware mixer. If you have any tips for avoiding this problem it would be great, as then I can get rid of the hardware mixer ;)
@RMEAudio4 жыл бұрын
Seems like your distortion effect is supposed to be an insert effect. :)
@SB-wn2rd4 жыл бұрын
@@RMEAudio Using it as an insert effect would solve the problem here, but it's not 'supposed' to be an insert only effect - it works perfectly well as a send effect with a true zero-latency mixing system ;)
@M4Y0_4 жыл бұрын
@@SB-wn2rd Maybe split the signal with a DI box, xlr to the interface and the through to the distortion unit. Of course then it's not really a send effect. Better if you send a test signal through and measure how many samples you have to nudge the effected track back. I don't see how an interface could solve this issue for you by itself. It can't know what you're using, e.g. if you have a digital unit as a send effect, there is a little bit more latency.
@SB-wn2rd4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your reply. I already have a completely workable setup for external inserts in my DAW using delay compensation. Of this course won't work for a live feed unless you accept that delay to what you're monitoring too, so I just a hardware mixer with aux sends when recording. To be clear, my issue here is that RME markets the interfaces as 'zero latency' and it's misleading as no audio interface is zero latency. Maybe they should call it 'zero additional latency' ;)

nothing is working...this totalmix fx makes no sense. i never get any output of the fx out
@reallyreallyfreemusic4 жыл бұрын
In the video you say "no latency," but what about the time it takes for the signal to reach the external effect, work its way though the processor(s), and then get back to the DAW? Doesn't this involve some unavoidable latency? If I set up a send within Cubase, they provide a way to compensate for latency by pinging the signal path. Wouldn't this be preferable? Here's a video in which this is explained: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl6xXmx3fNGljs0 I tried their method before, and IIRC I still had to use the send/return method in TotalMix. Still, it has the advantage of latency compensation.
@Mtaalas4 жыл бұрын
It would be very nice if TotalMix FX had the GUI such that you could "assign" particular outputs as sends and certain inputs as returns and then there would be send-knobs on each channel as assigned. This would make the user experience better by abstracting all that routing behind simpler user interface. Obviously having a delay compensation might be an issue, meaning that since no system is ever actually "zero latency" you always need to add delays to other channels to compensate... but hmm...

Thank you for the input. We’ll forward this to our developers.
