Good video. One comment though regarding the interval setting. I have the Vello Shutterboss intervalometer and also do astrophotography. If I take 1 minute exposures and want to have the camera wait 3 seconds between each shot I need to set the interval to 1 min 3 sec and not just 3 seconds. In the manual under the interval setting section it says to use an interval that is longer than your exposure time. This confused me at first but I realized this was correct and what I needed to do because when I tried just setting the interval to 3 sec it didn’t work.

@@greadore I saw in another video the same issue, but it turned out that the guy's intervalometer required at least 4 or 5 seconds between shots (not just 2 or 3). Thus, I believe he didn't have to set a 2 min 5 sec interval for a 2-minute exposure; they just had to have at least 4 or 5 secs in between. I need to test mine the same way...see if it has a sweet spot.

Great tutorial. My intervalometer looks almost identical to yours except that it is the JJC brand. That's a great tip about using the dashes for an unlimited number of shots. I was actually wondering how to override the 399 photo limit on my unit. Yes, that is very restrictive - 399 photos. I was shooting time lapse of a cruise ship out at sea today and I had to do a few sequences after reaching the photo limit each time. I'm using the intervalometer with a Panasonic G7 which does have an internal time lapse feature but it's not very reliable. Actually, most of the time, it refuses to start the time lapse. But this unit works like a charm.

Just a caution, found this out the hard way, Set the interval long enough for your camera to finish processing and storing the image (5 seconds works for me). I had mine set for 1 second the first time I used mine and the intervalometer would stop because the camera hadn't finished processing and storing the image. Probably only needs 2 or 3 seconds, but 5 works for my old 7D2.

Great video! I have a question related to using my intervalometer to trip sequential videos. My Canon 5D Mk iii (and most other cameras) limit videos to 29 minutes and 59 seconds. I would like to use my camera to shoot video of my band (along with a few other cameras) and have been experimenting on how to set things so that at the end of the 29:59 I can trip another video to start. I had played with only setting the INTV setting but I am getting inconsistent results. Can you provide any helpful info on how to get multiple videos? I am fine with losing a few seconds between each video as other cameras will be running. Thanks Paul

Just chance upon your video and really great tutorial. You said normally you would set the interval at 1s to let the sensor cool down. On the contrary you also mentioned for star trail you don't wish to have gaps between the trails. This means 0s interval. If I were to take 30s exposure for 3 hrs with 0s interval, ie total of 360 shots, 1) will the sensor be heated up so bad. 2) Will hot pixel form 3) Will there be enough writing time esp if taken in RAW since no interval 4) will it spoil the sensor. Looking forward to your advise
@forestchaput Жыл бұрын
1. Nope, the camera should handle it without too much issue. 2. Maybe, but they should be easily removable with color noise reduction in a program like Lightroom 3. Maybe. You'll need to test it. You could easily end up with missed shots or even 28 or 29 second exposures. 4. Nope! Your sensor will be totally fine.

@ull4h2 жыл бұрын
So if not on bulb mode, and I set my camera to take 10 second exposures, and something different on my intervalometer, which one takes priority? The camera or the intervalometer?
@lukain18720025 ай бұрын
Awesome, I have a question about taking photos with or without the intervalometer. First I have the R7 and there is a setting on video for say time laspe and also like you mentioned on the stills it can as well whatever you set it to for the number of photos and the duration. The idea I understand is that with the intervalometer you are able to check your photo and keep going. But if I want to do a subject it will not refocus if we are doing a serious of stills where we move around. Is there a setting for the intervalometer to make sure its focus duration the shots? Thank you
@forestchaput5 ай бұрын
If your camera is on auto focus, the intervalometer should send a focus command right before starting each exposure so you should be good to go. I recommend testing it first though!

So 422 "likes" and zero of the other. I got some "eq" from B&H Photo today, most of which came straight from the arch-nemesis east asian country we all depend on so much, Bhutan. (No, not really. China). I got through assembling some complicated setups, and the JJC intervalometer for my Canon was something I wanted to watch a few videos on before going to sleep, and then tomorrow I was going to rewatch the best one so that I would at least be familiar with it. But look at all this free time I have to compose a review!! You're damn right I "like" the video, it was the definition of concise. It was extremely well organized too, and I could actually use my little plastic intervalometer a couple times without referring to anything but what I had retained from watching this one tutorial. Or maybe it was the single page of schezwanese-english instruction manual I tried to read, but after cobbling together a few lines of Chinese-google-English in to not one thing remembered, I have at last just two things to say: 1)Whatever Rocky Mountain School of Photography is paying you isn't enough, and, 2) I wonder if this guy made other tutorial videos...Thank you for the help, man.

This is the best and clearest video by far on this topic. One question, is there any reason why this should not work in aperture or shutter priority mode? For example on Nikon D3200 which does not have its own built in Intervalometer are the settings on the camera important. One big reason to get one of these is to compensate for no on board one. What I am trying to do is set up with aperture priority and take a picture every say 3 seconds. It doesn’t like it and will only do on full manual......
@forestchaput3 жыл бұрын
Yep, that should work fine, just be sure that your "Long" setting is set too 1 second and you should be good to go!

I think i have the intervalometer set now.. tkx so much for the instructional vid, only had to watch it 3x (yeah.. i'm a little slow..lol) practiced with it on my desk.. but still having a challenge with long exposure settings.. and it may be more related to the camera than the intervalometer.. nikon d5600.. i'd like to try my hand at some night time star pics.. but can't seem to get the settings right. I'll explore more of your videos, hopefully i'm missing something that is fundamental, but easy to correct. cheers.

@forestchaput3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. I'm not sure on that. Do you happen to have "Long Exposure Noise Reduction" (sometimes called LENR) turned on? That will lead to your camera capturing a second image each time you press the shutter once.
@forgottenchildrensbooks47982 жыл бұрын
Maybe it’s like my Hahnel Capture unit: after the “Delay”, “Long”, “INTVL 1” and “N”, this unit has “INTVL2” and “N”. I’m a bit confused why or what this second interval does or would be used for. Any clarification about this would be very helpful, especially as it seems I can’t put the time at zero (default is 1sec and 1 shot for this last special setting.
