Live inSLC, UT,but this reminds me of coal country here. Used to stoke coal furnace by hand, growing up. Coal bin in basement.

Hello Lawrence, yeah I remember my grandfather doing that too.. I've to SLC a couple of times but never had the pleasure of railfanning it.

Another awesome video, man. Reading & Northern is a very impressive railroad. I would like to film their freight operations again in the future, especially one of their coal trains. Only problem is that it's an hour plus drive for me...guess I'll just have to try my luck one day.

For those who burn Anthracite, how can they afford it? In my neck of the woods, even the coal fired electric generating plants burn Bituminous. The coal we used to see in Indiana, and was burned here, used to from the Southern counties produced shaft mined soft coal, which is poor at best. What comes in to the State, by rail, usually is from open air mining in Wyoming or Montana.

The principal use of anthracite today is for a domestic fuel in either hand-fired stoves or automatic stoker furnaces. It delivers high energy per its weight and burns cleanly with little soot, making it ideal for this purpose. Its high value makes it prohibitively expensive for power plant use. I have been burning chestnut anthracite coal for many years. It is certainly much cheaper than electric, oil, or gas. I use a hand fired stove so I have heat even during power failures. I pick up my coal directly from a mine about about an hour east of me in the PA anthracite region. I do have electric baseboard heat if needed.

Based on the usual 21st. Century approach to energy availability and usage, your practices, by some, would be considered unique. At my age, and in my all electric apartment, I'm satisfied with my source of available energy. I'm suggesting, I would most post probably, not function very well, prescribing to a kind of, historically old school existence.
