Its one of the most requested topics I get asked about. RNAV vs RNP approaches, what are they? What is the difference? In this 2 part video sequence I am going to tailor all the knowledge a "sim pilot" will need to understand the fundamentals of both RNAV and RNP approaches. Hopefully by the time the videos are over you will have a much better understanding of this topic. But first we must cover some basics. Hope you enjoy!

There's a flying channel that took 2 full hours to explain this, and it took you less than 30 minutes. You also demo it after going over it, and I think your should definitely consider to continue your KZbin pilot/instructor career, if the airlines industry goes into a spin with the new world of lockdowns every five minutes, and so many people now out a job.

What an excellent production, a great example and I learnt a lot. I wish that I'd had this video when I was in ATC fifteen years ago! The RNAV Z to Rwy 34 at CYLW is a good place to attempt this approach when you've watched this a couple of times.

Thank you for this video. For the longest time I would avoid airports I really want to fly into simply because the only approach available was an RNAV. I am perfectly comfortable flying the final approach and landing the A321/A340 manually. It's just the decent path thing I was worried about. You've put my mind at ease. I'm currently mid flight in the Toliss A340 from Vancouver CYVR to Panama City MPTO with an RNAV approach into 21R.

We were always taught that when you start hand-flying and ignoring the flight director (i.e., looking out the window) to turn both FDs off. The only reason for this is to make sure the autothrust wakes up (SPEED) in case you were in THR IDLE | OP DES | (throttle essentially stuck in idle) when you clicked off the A/P [Indian Airlines Flt 605]. Personally, when I hand fly visually, I just pull the V/S knob--it puts the autothrust in SPEED so I can safely ignore the FD--and then I select the bird. It's simpler than pushing both FDs off and I can always throw in -3 degrees if I want to glance inside to check my pitch target. When you drop out of the straw, you automatically get V/S which gives you SPEED on the thrust so turning off the FDs is not really necessary. Unless I'm missing something, which is certainly possible.

After the RNP Approach vid i think i have sucessfully mastered my Airbus approaches (in the sim world of course). Thank you man, I really searched long for this. Perhaps I missed something but in the set up you said you were entering a downwind and the airspeed was 250kts. Below 10K ft the restricted speed is 250 kts unless approved otherwise. Also within 10 nm of an airport traffic area, speed is further restricted to 200 kts or below unless otherwise approved. Was this approach more than 10 miles out? The video and content was exceptional and I'm subscribing to your channel.

Thanks for this! Myself and another dispatcher at our company were discussing RNAV approaches and were wondering why our company isn't authorized to do LPV but can do LNAV/VNAV. Didnt know LPV required addition equipment and pilot training. Now I can bed down that discussion! Thank you sir!

@V1Sim 3 жыл бұрын
Yup you got it! I’ll touch a little more on this in the next video and it may clear up some additional questions, fun fact the airbus can and does fly LPV track but still uses LNAV/VNAV minimum. In reality I could spend 2 days talking about RNAV so I have to cut some things for time constraints lol Now I’m sure there may be some out there that are equipped for true LPV but it’s definitely not the norm. The next RNP vid will clarify a lot more on this topic. I’m glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks for your work as a dispatcher!

Thanks for the tutorial once again Captain. I have a question, do you think as the RNP precision gets more and more accurate than it's current state right now, would a full Autoland approach into trickier airports such as LPMA or KASE be possible in the future?
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in fact all rnav approaches will be renamed in the coming years with RNP terminology. And yes precision approaches with non land based navaids IMO will become the "norm" just not quite there yet
@derrick1707
@derrick1707 Жыл бұрын
The LNAV/VNAV on this approach is higher than the LNAV-only (probably due to terrian restrictions). Therefore the VDP of the LNAV is lowerthan the LNAV/VNAV. Additional, you have to add 50' to the LNAV, making the MDA 420 + 50 = 470
@mertgumru7722
@mertgumru7722 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the content. One question, LNAV/VNAV should be more precise than LNAV approach, but minimum for LNAV only(440) is lower than LNAV/VNAV (491). Is it something specific for Tampa?
