This song was initially written as a love song by lead singer Gwen Stefani and her brother, former band member Eric Stefani. However, after several revisions, Gwen reworked the lyrics into a breakup song, reflecting the end of her seven-year relationship with bandmate Tony Kanal.

The rotten orange is symbolic of a romantic relationship gone bad within the band, and also the album Tragic Kingdom (1995), which is critical of Orange County/Anaheim, California/Disneyland.

This song was EVERYWHERE in the mid-90s. Hit #1 in the US, UK, and a bunch of other countries. The parent album Tragic Kingdom was also #1 in a bunch of countries, it was No Doubt's big breakout.

Saw No Doubt on shrooms at the Toyota Amphitheater in early 2000s. Seen 100s of shows and this was one of my faves. This song was great of course. Top notch sound quality and great performances by Gwen and the band. Paramore opened. Excellent show.

Love Gwen Stefani. If you want to know how cool she is...in 2003 I was at the House of Blues in Los Angeles watching the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies and I jumped out on the totally empty dance floor and started dancing by myself until....I turn around see a really hot chick is dancing with me. It was Gwen!!!!! So cool. When the song was over she gave me a "high five" and disappeared.

Break up songs are always the best usually because of the emotion behind them. I wonder how she posed it to Tony Kanal when she re-wrote it to reflect their romantic break up. According to her after the album debut they went on tour for almost three years. She said they were still besties but when you see your ex with someone else after the break up - it stings. Repeat and rinse for three years. Maybe it helped them put it behind them.

You gotta listen to Just A Girl by No Doubt. Then try Alanis Morrisette "You Oughta Know". Then go ahead and do Fiona Apple "Criminal" (her whole debut album Tidal is something else.) These three, in my opinion, are 90s female rock icons that shaped or inspired a whole decade of ladies. Three powerhouse must-know ladies.

Not sure why but I'm 70 and I like "Hollaback girl" best, once I think of it it sticks in my brain. My daughter loved Gwen and reckoned she could wear anything and look cool. I saw George Clooney and Julia Roberts sing the song with her on Carpool Karaoke, hilarious. If you don't react to it just enjoy it yourself, it'll cheer you up XX Mark, Australia. You make me laugh with your innocence. 🤭🤭🤭 .. Gwen is now in her second marriage to Blake Shelton , who is a huge Country Music star with many #1 hits. This is ny favorite song if theirs but all their stuff is worth checking out. Im Just A Girl would probably be the next logical one. Once you finish with No Doubt, Gwen Stefanis solo stuff is very different and just as much fun. Im sure you are familiar to some degree with Hollaback Girl. That would be a tough one for you to miss. But Cool, Rich Girl, Sweet Escape are a few of many of her solo hits. And i cant ever comment on her without mentioning how gorgeous she is. Particularly in thus video. Ive got such a crush on her for many decades.

A 90s classic. The song that introduced the world to No Doubt and the voice of Gwen Stefani. I did subsequently learn of the relationships within the band itself, which makes the video all the better for knowing. They actually played on that aspect really well, to suggest band friction with Stefani, almost making the video into a mock fly-on-the-wall documentary . Of course it is (largely?) fiction and they'd need to agree to do that. It's just another way to interpret the meaning behind the lyrics. Yes, you really should have heard some of these songs growing up, and ones like this in particular. Have you been out the convent long?😜

Idk how bad the band's inside cooperation got, but if you look the video it can be thought in coulme of wats. Either singer and some band member were an item, or the band started to show crack inside out. Tourlife is hard especially when every reporter wants the vocalist/talent in front of band. IK happen to know because Tarja Turunen(from Nightwish) was thrust into that role at fisrt, acter that she thought she has become so big he didn't need the band according Tarja.

Really-do you wonder why? There are tons of bands where the lead singer goes solo, because they are the most talented (and also bands where individuals-guitarists, who are stars, who also go on to be stars). She is, btw, greatly talented.

I watched your reactions to Heart of Glass and this one and I feel like you're not even reacting to anyting. Just grooving with the song and if you say something it's something about yourself or some incredibly generic.
