I was 14 years old when I heard this song for the first time. That was 1968, about a year after it's release. It thrilled me then and still does 62 years later. The Moody blues literally Created the sound track of my life; "Nights in White Satin", "Forever Autumn", ""Your Out There Somewhere" "Your Wildest Dreams" "Tuesday Afternoon", among dozens of others. Thank You !

The difficulty with the Moody Blues is that their music is written to be listened to as an album, not individual songs. This is the real way to listen to them. One song blends into another, forming a lush soundscape that takes you to places you've never been. Try "Days of Future Passed" which is the album this song comes from. It takes you through a single day in beauty and splendor. You will never regret the time you spend listening to this amazing band.

In 1969 & 1970, the brilliant music of the Moodys, and their genius of incorporating orchestral vibes into each composition was very much responsible for my sanity staying intact during my Army tour in Vietnam. I have been a hard core fan since 1966. Now, at 76, I still get emotional when I hear this song. Thanks so much for a wonderful reaction. Saw them 26x. If not for the Beatles, they would be my all-time favorite band. Cool story about them (if memory serves...): They were trying to get a record deal and accepted a job to compose a rock version of Dvorak's New World Symphony. But they hated the gig and decided to record and present a concept album (arguably the first) they had been working on. The record producers were aghast and upset they did not do as they had agreed, but one executive saw the potential in their effort and the album was produced. Days of Future Past chronicles the passing of a single day from dawn to night, using music to capture the "feel" of each time of day exquisitely. We were gifted Nights in White Satin and Forever Afternoon (Tuesday) from that landmark album and their career took off into the zenith of progressive rock. So many lovely melodies, inspired poetry and that unmistakable, sweeping and moody sound. And they can flat out rock too! Peace.

I absolutely loved your reaction. This track is from their "Days of Future Passed" album, which wove classical music throughout multiple rock tracks. This was the biggest hit, but a very uptempo contribution was "Peak Hour." There is even spoken poetry dropped throughout the album. It was a mind-blowing departure from other music around it at the time. These guys are absolute legends. 😁

My friend and I were pen pals through the Moody Blues Fan Club with a couple girls from London and in 1983 they put us two Bostonians up for two weeks at their London flat. Although not often heralded as such, this group continued the "British Invasion" of the US in the late '60s, when I came of age. Their ethereal music melded well with the psychedelic (mostly US) sounds of the late '60s. This rebirth of their masterpiece with an orchestra speaks to the very long-time persistence of their wonderful music. As an old guy, this music pulls me back to that wonderful, disturbed, happy and sad, incredible time. I hope, when you're my age, that you can look back to the music of your youth with the same fondness and yearning I do. I'm not at all certain that will be, but I hope so. Yours is an interesting, intelligent review. For the next Moody Blues choice, I suggest anything from their extraordinary "On the Threshold of a Dream" album.

The Moody Blues along with Pink Floyd were the masters of the concept album. I always tell people who react to Floyd and Moody that if you want to truly want to understand you need to do the entire album. Most artists will release an album will drop 12 random songs that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Floyd and Moody tell a story and each song is a page in that journey. This song comes from the album Days of Future Passed. This song ties a bow on a great story. What you don’t get to hear in this live version of the song is it ends with a poem called the Late Lament. My father introduced me to Moody Blues when I was about 6 way back in the early 80s and we owned a flower business and my dad delivered the flowers. I’d fake being sick to get out of school so I could spend the day riding with my dad listening to music all day singing our heads off. So my suggestion for you is to go and react to the entire albums maybe not one sitting but consecutively so you can take the journey.

Ironically, the most recognizable element of this song are the string sections which is a Mellotron. Mellotron was a primitive synthesizer that looped tape recordings of actual instruments. So this whole fable of music before "computer generated garbage" is exactly that. People have been using computer technology in recordings since electronic recordings have existed. Music before computers? You had to get invited or buy your way into a hall to see a composer or orchestra play it. 95% or more of the people reading this would not have been that wealthy or privileged

Must be played together, 'Departure' is only 45 seconds long btw. 'In The Beginning' / 'Lovely To See You' (1969) from 'On The Threshold of a Dream. Each a stand alone but best played together. Some other outstanding tunes; 'The Story In Your Eyes', 'The Voice', 'Gemini Dream', 'Your Wildest Dreams', 'Question', and 'I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)'. The Moody Blues were basically the first prog-rock band. This song comes from one of their early albums, the thematic "Days of Future Passed" played with a symphonic orchestra in addition to their usual instruments including the mellotron, an early version of the synthesizer. They didn't use orchestras on all their albums and did some fantastic blues rock, psychedelic rock and love songs. You've got to try Question or Ride My Seesaw to get another taste of their talent.

Tuesday Afternoon from the same album (Days of Future Passed) is the other stand out track, but the album is beautiful throughout and designed to be heard as a whole - one of the first concept albums. It goes through a single day with songs for each time and mood. This is the last track, representing the night time, and is followed on the album by a spoken poem.

The original studio version used a Mellotron for the strings. It was the first sampling technology. Indispensable for musicians that could not accommodate a string section. There’s a few KZbin videos of how it worked
