Not fortunate enough to have access to a river approaching the quality of the southern ones, although round here the Irwell and Ribble are in easy reach. My favourite however are the tributaries of the Irwell that come through Bolton , Lancashire. At times they dont look much, indeed as recently as the 80s the rivers authority declared them ' dead' due to industry. The last 35 years have seen some superb efforts and i have several Roach, always my favourite...of a pound or more from them. On the face of it this may not seem like much, but for me it confirms an almost unbelievable transformation of the rivers and their environment, and the feeling of catching quality fish from these waters cannot be surpassed. One day i will treat myself to a spell down south on one of the classic Roach waters. Superb video, top man, beautifully made.

Roach have always been my favourite also. ... I've never wanted to "specimen fish" for them. The exciting thrill for me is fishing casters, hemp or bread punch & seeing the float slide away, never knowing if it'll be another 6 ouncer or maybe a 1lb or even BIGGER redfin!! 😉

Trevor that experience you had as a child in Zen Buddhism is called Satori or in Japan Kensho. The falling away of you the observer and the object, in your case a Roach. I had it aged 26 with a Damselfly. The smell of Roach slime will always be the memory of childhood. I caught a 2 lb and 1 lb aged 9 on the river Eden in Kent. Magic halcyon day.

PS..... The biggest mistake I made (for 10+ years) was never having enough faith in Hemp to seriously use it as hook bait. ... "Yeh" I used it as feed in conjunction with casters for years. Then one day on the Grand Union it "clicked" on a stretch that a knew intimately for 10+ years!. I'd had many many brilliant nets of roach there on caster = .... I was absolutely taken back and suffered with MENTAL SHOCK!! 😨 .... I had the best roach fishing session ever! I caught several roach of a size (1 and a half pounds) that I didn't know existed in there!! I'd never had them that big from that location, even on the "roach favourite" caster 😨!! .... I was deeply affected by being brought down to earth, previously thinking that I was "an expert" 😨 ..... lol 😉

@@thezanzibarbarian5729 I'm originally from Warwickshire (a village nr Leamington Spa, so I know the Avon quite well. Where did you fish?? There's some kloncking Chub & Roach in there 😨!! And also in the Leam tributary (eg) nr Offchurch. If you saw the Leam at Offchurch, you wouldn't give it a 2nd look. It looks tiny & only good for kids minnow fishing 😉. But, if you walk downstream, the Leam meanders, widens & deepens, with some gorgeous looking "feature" pools on the bends .... one evening, I bagged-up on caster caught chub, including 4 that all weighed 5lb 2oz exactly (I weighed each of them). How freaky is that 😨? And there's BIGGER ones in there too! 😉. I agree = cheese is an awesome Chub bait!! ... cheese and a huge lobworm are the only baits I know where you don't need to loose feed for success. .. I massage 1 part Stilton + 2 parts Strong Cheddar together, and mould a grape size (or bigger) around a size 4 hook 😨 I don't worry about the hook point showing. The hook is totally hidden in the cheese.... when a Chub takes it, there's no messing about = it takes it confidently, and the hook flies out of the cheese when you strike!! .... Roach love "smelly cheese" also. Many a big open match has been won on canals, by a guy using it in conjunction with bread punch tactics. .. I'll probably get lynched for divulging that "secret" 😉 lol

That's a proper cheeky male Chaffinch, nicking your maggots Trevor! But, isn't that what makes fishing magical 😉? You have difficulty explaining your love of Roach fishing? Here's my explanation of my love .... = Roach are smart finicky. They'll not touch your hook bait (except the silly tiddlers) if you're fishing crudely, or not feeding correctly.... They're not "easy" like those silly F1 carp & other narna fish, in overstocked commercial "ponds", where catching a 100lb netfull is about exciting & rewarding as watching Eastenders on TV 😨. That's why one 2lb Roach on the river, or natural lake/canal, is worth more than five 20lb + carp nowadays 😉 ❤
@mgproryh
@mgproryh Жыл бұрын
roach arent my go to fish, but at the end of the day a small hook with maggots on a river packed with fish, you just cant beat it. You litterally never know what youl catch next. Its by far the best way to fish. Dont get me wrong I love the fight of a carp, I like method feeding on a commercial now and again but its just something else catching those "wild" fish. Even if you see a pike chasing in your silver, the rush is just something else.
