So much so, that you can look up cases of people getting as much time in jail for smoking weed as people who committed far more heinous acts, like say.....grape (To give you an idea of how extreme South Korea is about drugs, South Korean citizens can go overseas to a country where smoking weed is legal, and still get in trouble for it in South Korea). Lee Sun-Kyun was subject to an obscene amount of time in police questioning for what were just allegations of past drug use (19 hours over a single weekend, at one point), of which Sun-Kyun insisted he took unknowingly, and on top of that, Sun-Kyun was dealing with blackmailers who were threatening to reveal Sun-Kyun's alleged infidelity to the public. The police prematurely released sensitive details to the press that anyone with a brain knows would lead dog media outlets to start writing up sensationalist pieces of Sun-Kyun's guilt, even though that was not yet decided. Rumors of his alleged infidelity eventually got out, and Korean netizens are notoriously horrible, so these revelations led to some pretty severe cyberbullying backlash. Sun-kyun was unfortunately found in a car having taken his own life not long after. To answer your question as to why he was bullied, it's because Korean netizens are demons. They say some pretty heinous things. One time, a celebrity couple announced on their social media that they were currently grieving due to losing their expect child to a miscarriage, and some netizens expressed that they were happy the couple lost the baby. Like netizens, Korea media outlets are trash (Just look up what's happening with Tzuyang), Korean police don't have a great reputation either, so fuck it, they're trash too, and Korean society is extremely harsh. Judgmental is an understatement, and it is extremely easy for even the most popular of celebrities to have their careers come tumbling down over even minor controversies. Korea's handle on mental health is quite bad, and Korea has the highest suicide rate of any country in the OECD. It is unfortunately common for Korean people backed against a wall to take their own lives. Sure, online sentiment about Sun-Kyun changed after he died, but that's not going to bring him back, and I have no reason to believe Korean society will use this as a cautionary tale to temper their actions and withhold judgement/harsh criticism until all facts are clear. Sun-Kyun's story is far from the first tragic tale of a Korean celebrity that took his own life. I fear it will not be the last.
