Road Car vs Racecar: BMW M4 GT4 versus M4

BMW has been making the well-regarded M4 road car, but its Motorsport division also makes and sells a racing version of the M4 called the GT4. We have a look at what makes it interesting and take the M4 GT4 of Pirelli World Challenge racing driver Samantha Tan for a spin around Virginia International Raceway.

Heard you on Ross Bentley's podcast and decided to subscribe. I'm always interested in how road cars compare to the racing version. Now, how about the Cayman GT4 vs the Club Sport? I'm hoping for a GT4 w/ PDK!!!!

Thanks! There’s a new Club Sport and GT4 road car coming soon. No question the CS will be PDK, but it’s hard to say which way they’ll go with the road car. They’ll only do one transmission for the road car, for sure.

Because the M3 and M4 are so compromised on brake cooling, what we really need to see is an M4 GT4 with the front bumper off. BMW needs to make the brake cooling solution more adaptable to the road cars.

It sucks that KZbin has no way of teaching its algorithm to understand quality -- very cool comparison test. I find it odd that so many race cars have these steering wheels though. Imagine you spin in one of these and your thumbs get stuck. PS: Look into using spot metering on your GoPro so the outside view doesn't get overexposed (for the most part anyways). Thanks for a very cool video.

Also, I got here via Ross Bentley's podcast. Also #2: Can you explain why race cars tend to not have brake boosters? Is the feedback better for threshold braking? If so, why not just use ABS -- Porsche's (well, Bosch's) system is brilliant. That being said, I have never driven a race car and am not entirely clear why you would move braking force to either of the axles.

The GoPro 5 is deficient with spot metering. My old 3s still do a better job than the 5s.

Can't answer that question. I just drive what I've been given. Most of the other race cars I've raced, including mine, have had conventional road car braking setups, some with bias adjusters.

Thanks! It’s deliberately engineered to sound that way. They spend a ton of resources making the road car sound its best. The race car sounds soooo good when it fires up, though.
