In this series I'm turning the lightest production car engine in the world into a fire breathing beast!
In part 1 of the road to 300hp I will find out what happens to a stock economy 3A92 engine after being abused with almost 20psi of boost. We will check for blown head gasket as well as damage to rods, pistons, and our journal bearings on the crankshaft and connecting rods. How safe is running boost on a stock engine? Ill also discuss the future plans for the engine and complete rebuild.
Also the lightweight billet flywheels are now available if you would like one send me an email to rberlin82@gmail.com

Hey, thanks a million for this video. There's really small amount of info on this engine on youtube. Regarding those metal pieces: I like to watch similar videos of engines teardown and I recall one guy was finding similar metal pieces in korean manufacturers engines. He said it's quite common and that it's not causing issues as it's caught by oil pump metal filter. He suggested it was there from the start. Kind of bad casting artefacts. Not sure he had that many of them though. Modern day engines are not created to last long. So I wouldn't expect any forged pistons even for turbo charged engines. Also I was under impression this engine has aluminium walls, so forged piston will wear them really quickly. Anyways thanks for sharing your work with us. Wish your engine a long life. :)

The 3A92 can have a bio content in the fuel up to 20%. So E85 will destroy the engine (according to Mitsubishi).

Oh this is sweet. That's definitely not a forged piston. The forgings I have at my shop don't have those casting lines and appear to have an almost bead blasted finish in the areas that are not machined. The good news is that they look similar to the SRT-4 pistons, even down to those hardened looking ringlands. The other good news is that even the SRT-4 pistons are good to something like 500hp in a 4 cylinder. Their only weakness is that they're brittle, so they don't hold up to knock/detonation very well.

Since you only need 3. . .I'd bet Venolia, RaceTec, Egge, etc could make you a set of forged pistons for not TOO much money. Though, more boost will probably require o-ring grooves in the block and proper copper o-rings installed. *Edit* Looks like you had Traum make you a set 👍

I second "Ren Nakora" ! Thank you for taking the time and effort to document this. I don't speak Spanish, so an unable to follow along with "Puerto Ric" and his turbo build... So You're really the ONLY resource for a 3A92 build like this. Any thoughts on swaynetech coatings for engine internals? Seems like this would be a perfect use case for them. At least pistons, combustion chambers, valves, and turbo manifold. You're feedback is appreciated.

Yes those coatings are great, but cost really adds up quick when your having pistons and rods custom made. If it’s reasonable cost wise I’ll probably do something similar. Thanks for watching!

Just for the future, theres another halve a pound to take off that flywheel around the ring gear are on the edges like I had done for my Suzuki G13B custom flywheel. Mine got down to 5.8Lbs and was used for circle track for over a decade now used in my G16B daily.

Those deposits look a lot like what Papadakis runs into with the 1000hp ethanol FD cars that compete and then get put straight into a trailer and sit for 3 weeks before the engines are refreshed. The way they run those cars rich leaves lots of moisture in there while the fuel is also enough of a solvent to wash off the oil film.

64° F.that's like 17° C. It's around 10° C here in the UK and that's the normal, wouldn't consider it too cold here tbh. I expect Florida is used to warmer climes?

Maybe I missed it, but why not just look for a better engine to start with?
@DirtGearTv
@DirtGearTv 2 жыл бұрын
define better? 3a92 is lightest production engine, there is a huge supply and can be picked up for $400-600 with low miles. With a little boost it outperforms just about eveything in its class. A second hand Rotax ace 900 for example gonna run several grand and use a cvt tranny

@@DirtGearTv, Ok, I understand the why of it now. Thanks for the reply and explanation. I appreciate it! P.S. I was thinking of one of those 350 HP Ford Focus engines, maybe find a salvaged wreck or something.

@@DirtGearTv These cars are so cheap and so reliable that many larger wrecking yards don't even want them. They take up space and nobody needs parts. I have seen a few show up in Pick-and-Pull type yards in my area. Instead of $400-600 for a low mile motor it is $150-200! Can't hurt to be on the lookout in case you eventually manage to punch a ventilation window in your block!

im planning on running a speeduino, would the setup be the same as yours in terms of hardware? im trying to make the most powerful all motor mirage right now. but i need to know what would go into making a speeduino work with my engine, i cant imagine it to be too terribly different from your setup.
