The FIDE Grand Prix is taking place from December 11-23 2019. The 16-player knockout is the 4th of four legs of the 22-player Grand Prix series that will determine two places in the 2020 Candidates Tournament. Players compete in 3 of the 4 tournaments, which each have a 130,000 euro prize fund, with 24,000 for 1st place. There are also from 1 (quarterfinal loser) to 8 (winner) Grand Prix points available, plus an additional point for each match win without tiebreaks. The overall series prize fund is 280,000, with 50,000 for 1st place.
Each round consists of two games of classical chess, with a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 30 min to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the match is tied two 25+10 rapid games are played. If still tied, there are two 10+10 games, then two 5+3. Finally a single Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 (with a 2-second increment from move 61) but Black wins the match with a draw. Official website: worldchess.com

9:11 It's not that you lose the queen. The real problem is that you have no good way of re-capturing the rook. After Bxg2, Rxb3... If axb3 you have Nxg2 removing the defender of the rook. and if Rxb3 you have Qxa2, forking the king and rook.

@agadmator Dmitry Andreikin defeated Radoslaw Wojtaszek in the first round. It was another Dmitry (Jakovenko) who defeated Mamedyarov. The reason I know that is that, as a Grischuk fan, I knew there was a scenario where Sasha would qualify before the tournament started if Mamedyarov, MVL and Nepo were all in the same half of the draw. As it turned out Mamedyarov was in the other half, hence he could not have played Andreikin.

#suggestion i think agad you should do morphy saga .....as most of the tactics lessons are picked from morphy games ....so as a chess enthusiast it would be a complete learning package for us by watching the morphy game as well as knowing all the tactics by seeing the game from the begining ....so as to know how to reach the position .....or what response to be played from the begining to have a tactical game play in the middle game.....its difficult to reach directly at a tactical position ....its better to know the full game nd then jumping to the tactics.....so it would be a good lesson for us to know tactics

MVL came into this event with more Grand Prix points than Nepo, so he doesn't necessarily have to beat Nepo in the semifinals to qualify for the candidates. For Nepo to qualify through the grand prix, he has to win the entire tournament, so if MVL loses in the semifinals and then the winner of Wei Yi and David Navara beats Nepo in the finals, MVL still qualifies for the candidates.

I always thought the name Vachier means something like cowboy (or cow-herder or something like that), since I do not know practically anything about the French language, but I somehow know that "la vache" is a cow. To my surprise, the cowboy is "le vacher" without the letter "i", vachier seems to mean nothing, but "va chier" is a rather nasty (almost said discovery) phrase.

because after black moves his king to attack the knight and white captures the rook, then white's bishop is hanging on g2 so black will capture the bishop and at the same time white's knight is trapped on a8 and will eventually fall meaning that white will have traded two pieces for a rook and a pawn.
