I'm in Maui right now with the family. We did the road to Hana yesterday. We winged the entire trip. However, we did the "backside" road before hand. I believe they call it Kahekili highway. When you look it up, 50 percent of the internet says Kahekili is the backside, but I feel like Piilani highway which is the southern part of the highway before Hana is the backside. There was a shirt in Kaanapali gift shop that said "I survived the road to Hana". I wish there was a shirt that said "I survived the road to the road to Hana and the road after the road from Hana". LOL Just thought I woild share that because both highways North top and bottom South what a nerve racking experience. You were right in your video. So glad it wasnt raining. Anyways, new subscriber here! Cheers!

Nice video and nice background music! Did it back 15 years ago and nothing’s changed. Like you said, do it in daylight, good weather with NO rain.

Wifey and I did it on July, 2022. It wasn't too bad. We were worried that the road might be closed at one point and we wouldn't be able to turn around, but we made it through. We will never do it again though. It takes too long and if your car breaks down you would be in trouble. There is no phone connection for the most of the way.

Well done. The background music while you weren't talking represented the awesome feeling you get pn that route . Did this in 2017 and the scary part is when you see boulders on the road and realize they must have fallen off the sheer walls to your left. You had to hope one didn't fall on you😮 Also there were times you had to get close o the edge on very narrow parts to let on-comers by.

I did the Hana highway from Kehei counter clockwise... Didn't have a clue about the Hana highway was heading to the sacred falls

Drove this road a few years ago in a Chevy Malibu and had no problems, just drive with caution. Came up to Hana the traditional way and continued on this road and saw some fantastic country. The little country store we ran across way back there was the coolest thing and the remnants of the old church.

The back roads are def a bonus. Beautiful scenery. And quiet due to the lack of traffic along that side.

We did it the regular way last week, all of the way around in 11 hours in a jeep and it was fine. The video seems to look way scarier than real life was but probably because we weren't cliff side. Maybe someday that rough section will get paved.

Description says "I definitely wouldn't not recommend on a rainy day?" So, you recommend to still drive on a rainy day?

We drove the Road to Hana , last week,the other way. My fiancé went the other way b4, I’m glad to see it through your excellent video, thanks, guess this might be why JEEP’s ate the most rented. Thanks 🙏 ✈️👍😃🏝🍷

I’ve done both ways myself. It’s definitely a different experience. Put it on your list next time you visit the island.

Thank you for filming this.... what was the app? there's no link to it. Was it the Gypsy app or the Shaka Maui app? Or something different? Sounded like some great narration.
@passport_ced2 жыл бұрын
I apologize. It was the Shaka App. Enhanced the entire experience.

Thé rain definitely changes the trip. Definitely would stay away from the back roads if it was raining.

I drove from Lahaina in Maui clockwise on Route 340 to Wailuku.. it scared the shit out of me when I drove thru one way stretch with no guard rails in a mini van! Did you try that route?
@passport_ced2 жыл бұрын
I have not.
@passport_ced2 жыл бұрын
We drove on a similar road as the one you are describing in France. Same concept…one way, no rails and in a minivan. Makes for a good story after the fact 😂

So which app was this? Shaka? Gypsy? It wasn’t mentioned in the description 😉 Thanks in advance!!

Shaka! It really enhanced the entire experience and will narrate it in reverse if you choose to take the back roads like we did.

Would you please show me how to go reverse rout ? What do I put in Google map to go that way ?
@passport_ced2 жыл бұрын
Put in Keokea as your start and Hana as your destination. Hit directions and that will highlight what people refer to as the reverse rout.

Could it be done in a normal car? Toyota camry?. how late did you guys get back into Lahaina? Thanks
@passport_ced2 жыл бұрын
We didn’t come straight back to Lahaina. If you have the time, consider staying a night in Hana or Paia, and driving back in the morning. It’s a long and tiring day. Try to give yourself sometime so you don’t feel rushed. There’s a lot to see. Just my opinion. It can def be done in a normal car. Roads really aren’t that bad as you saw in the video. But again, rain can change all of that. I wouldn’t recommend doing it even in an SUV on a heavy rain day.

Did it a few days ago, on the way from Hana, after the national park. A dude told us, “don’t do it” on the way but we continued. It was rough at first, especially since we didn’t have the proper vehicle, and no cell service in case car broke down but after the rough patches then yeah the highway is majestic once it’s fully paved and just glorious views. We didn’t even look up any info beforehand which probably resulted in the unexpected nature of the road for us. We just followed the google map shortest route back, instead of doubling back. Lol I would do it again but with a better vehicle tbh.
