Hi, I was stationed at Naha, Okinawa which was just a short cab ride just outside the main gate. At that time I was running messages between Naha, Katina and White Beach. Loved my time there and met many of the locals who were out of bounds, but if you stayed in the "A" sign locations you were scalped and even rolled. I met a family that lived in a small area that I still can't spell, but it sounded like Sacrosac. It was across the big binjo ditch just outside of Naha city, up a winding road and into a small stand bar named Myuki. The young lady who was there with her mother and father was named Imachan. Her mother was very watchful and very jealous of who she sat with or even talked to. I have many fond memories of that beautiful country. I am glad that you have this site, I will visit it often!

623rd AC&W, Det. 2 , Kume Jima. 8-68 to 8-69. 21 years old, used every excuse possible to get to the main island, and Naminoue. The girls, the bars, the fun! Was there at Camp Schwab in 1967 on my way to Viet-Nam. Was with the 3/1 mar reg kilo co. Had the best time of my life there. I will never forget the time I spent in the Ryukyus. Thank you, great post. brought back a lot of memories.

I was there in the years 70 and 71. It was the best time I had in the army. I worked on a LCM on the Island of Okino-Erabu Shima. But I lived in naminoue.

I was there 1968-70. Camp Kue when it was an Army hospital. Great times. Drank too much, chased too many women. Oh well, that was Okinawa when you were only 19.

Hello fellow vets. Remember the song well. Used to go there with my buddies quite frequently. I was stationed in Machinato at Camp Foster I believe it was, very close to Nam... Was stationed there from Apr 1969 thru Mar 1971 at the Hq & Svc Co 2nd Log Command working for SSGT Woods processing the MP reports from Hqs to Company and back up. My buddies John Bungo, William Page, Cropper, SGT Zapata, Garza and others I can't remember would always get together and go have a fun time in Nami.. best 2 years I spent in the Army. Anybody remember me? SP E-5 Everardo Perez from Brownsville, Tx. John Bungo was from Pennsylvania, Page from California, etc, Zapata & Garza from Tx, etc. Greetings, You all take care. Am 70 now!

Camp Foster/USMC was aboard Camp Sukiran/U.S. Army...remember NTA...the Northern Training Area, Cave of The Virgins, Kadena, Koza BC Street Shuri Castle...and, who could ever forget those hot glazed doughnuts from The House of Gyro??? Sensei Kanei Uechi had his All Oki Karate Federation up in Futema...AND all those benjo ditches 'neath the sidewalks. Holy Hell! One, up by Gyro busted, soon's I stepped on it. Blech! Yep, and I was snokkered at the time. LMAO!

I had never heard of this shrine/area of Okinawa, even though I was stationed at Camp Hansen 1990-1991, until I found this video a few years ago by chance. Based on the comments here, it seems that Naminoue’s heyday as a/“the” party area for G.I.s lasted until the early 70’s, when it shifted to the Gate 2/BC street area. Even though it was well before my time, I understand the vibe of this song...as can any veteran that was stationed on Oki and enjoyed partying there in our youth ( before the pearl-clutching PC/Karen crowd ruined it, that is...🙄). Because of this song/video, during my trip to Okinawa in 2018, I visited the Naminoue shrine and beach, which can be seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3nNoZ14jNKFq9k Hopefully some 60-70’s era vets can see a few familiar sites, or at least see what it looks like now, and remember the good times they had there...

Great video! I live in Okinawa and have for some 21 years over 4 tours. Just to let you know the meaning of the word; Nami no ue , Nami=Wave, No (a possesive) Ue, on top of or above, so Naminoue=Above the wave. You pronounce it the American way with four syllables, , (Nah me new "e"), however the pronunciation (In Japanese) is five syllables, Nah me no oo eh. This area is one long forgotten by "GI's", however Kinville and BC street are still there! (Or so I've been told) ;-)

I would like to hear the original song. I was stationed on the LT 529 Army tug boat at Naha port. I was also on a LCM at Okino Island. This was all of 1969 and part of 1970.

This is exactly how Americans always pronounced Naminoue. If you pronounce it correctly (Na-mi-no-u-e), this song wouldn't work. I worked not far from Naminoue during the summer of 1971.
