Road to Revival: Hands-On Steam Experience | Episode 11

What will it be like to have our very own operating steam locomotive? We recently joined ‪@fortwaynerailroad‬ aboard restored mainline steam locomotive No. 765. Built for the Nickel Plate Road in 1944, the 765 has been operating in excursion service almost continuously since its own revival in 1979. Meet our crew as they get a glimpse of what awaits Nashville, Tennessee when our very own 576 returns to the high iron!

THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE has inspired millions of people throughout history - and Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway No. 576 is about to inspire thousands more. NASHVILLE STEAM is undertaking the restoration and operation of a Nashville legend. The adventure departs now. Will you climb aboard The Stripe?
The mission of the NASHVILLE STEAM PRESERVATION SOCIETY is to preserve our history by restoring and operating relevant historic railroad equipment for the purposes of education, tourism, and goodwill to and for METRO NASHVILLE.
The restoration of Locomotive 576 to operation will serve as a visceral link to the history of Nashville and honor those who make the region great. The locomotive was designed in Nashville and has been called the Music City home since delivery from the factory in 1942.
The rebuilding of Locomotive 576 to operation is influenced by a variety of important key goals:
• RESTORE the locomotive to operation for the general public enjoyment
• PARTNER with Metro Parks to provide excursion train tickets for sponsored underprivileged children’s programs
• BOLSTER the Entertainment Industry to utilize the locomotive in films, videos, and television production
• PROVIDE a transparent, visitor-and family-friendly environment during the restoration and operation of the locomotive (including when stored at its shop while not in use)
• CREATE and grow public support and awareness
• EDUCATE about the important role No. 576 played for Nashville and the Nation during WWII
• OPERATE special trains in connection with Nashville, Metro Parks, and other local venues as well as creating special events utilizing the locomotive in operation and display
• ENGAGE the community through outreach to encourage volunteers and to provide hands-on technical trade training for welding, machining, and mechanical comprehension

I’ve been following this project from day one good job and keep up the good work it’s a long hard road and it’s going to be even harder to come but in the end it’s going to be worth it

This is some great progress! I remember seeing 576 when it was sitting under the canopy in the park, with a layer of pigeon poop covering the bell. She looks almost brand new and shiny now! Keep up the great work, and, next time I'm in Nashville, if the engine is finished, I look forward to riding behind it. With the RJ Corman takeover of the Nashville and Eastern, will 576 still have a place to run over the N&E? Also, have any other roads thrown their hat into the ring for being potential excursion hosts?
