You don’t need to if you are instructed by a pilot vehicle. They have absolute authority while they are on the road - thus they can make those calls for you legally.

Even with radio communication and a straight road, I'd be nervous about oncoming traffic for a two-minute passing attempt.

That’s understandable, its a lot of faith to have in people. But the pilots are professionals and this is a very common scenario, generally everyone follows their directions and there are no issues. Every now and then a car may disobey them and try to keep coming but if the first couple of pilot cars and police escort out in front don’t scare them into stopping, the sight of a road train and 8.5m wide load coming at them gets them to pull over pretty quickly.

@@Als.Trucks Oh, I don't doubt their professionalism. I just doubt whether I'd be up to the task. But I've enjoyed my time driving trucks in the US and Europe, and driving a road train at least once is very much on my bucket list. I really enjoyed seeing them on the road when I visited Western Australia and drove out to Kalgoorlie.
