many people don’t know this outside of locals, but the us 61 bridge (between S. Parkway & Macklemore Ave) was torn down and reconstructed in late 2012-early 2013, this was due to the traffic issues, potholes, and just an overall attempt to make the area look nicer, that particular area is also one of the oldest zip codes in the entire city of Memphis and Shelby County. Despite how it looks, it is heavily populated.

Hello 504roadtrips I really love this us 61 series and I remember watching the I-55 series you made

Great videos. I watched the I-55 series and I am following the US Highway 61 series. Thanks for bringing back lots of memories. I grew up in southeast Missouri and am familiar with both I-55 and US 61. I've been to the north terminus of I-55 in Chicago and as far south as southern Mississippi. I can remember when going to Memphis to visit many moons ago, US 61 was the only way to get there from our area. I was surprised to see that the concrete arch between Missouri and Arkansas on US 61 was still there. I remember when the old US 61 crossed the Diversion Channel and the old (older) US 61 bridge was still standing. We used to go fishing there off the old bridge. That bridge has long since been torn down, but the old access road is still there. There is a parking area there for people to fish or go boating. I remember when I was much younger going to St. Louis. Again, US 61 was the way to get there from our area . This before I-55 was built or completed. Again, thanks for your videos and for all the memories.

A fascinating comment about four US highways in their concurrency being abandoned for "sleek, high-speed Interstates"! That is one direction things, sadly, often go. Another is that the freeway is sold to the public as a way to "alleviate the congestion" of the older roads, when, often, both the freeway and the old road both choke on the new traffic generated. I am so grateful to see E. H. Crump Boulevard at last and the beautiful fall colors soften the strip effect of the old road very effectively. After 175 joins 61 and 14, the road is quite pretty, like Lindbergh Boulevard in St. Louis County right after the I-64 exit. It also reminds me of Wilson, Arkansas. By the way, I never saw a Tennessee 1 or 14 sign, though the US highways were well marked. Are these "secret routes"?

Tennessee assigns state highway numbers to US Highways and Interstates, but they don’t sign them. But the mile markers have the state route in small numbers at the bottom. But, as far as I could see, there weren’t any mile markers on 61 in Tennessee. I thought there was a Tenn 1 JCT sign somewhere…I’d have to go back and watch the footage again.

I wonder how many people have screwed up and gone straight at that I-55/Riverside Dr./Crump Blvd. exit when they didn't realize they were supposed to turn. It's very sudden, especially coming into the city from across the river.
@504RoadTrips2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure it happens, but it’s signed pretty well, and 99% of the traffic is keeping right to stay on I-55.

They are finally redoing that I-55 interchange. Thought people would take the time to go through Downtown Memphis.

Why is US-61 in Tennessee so short?
@504RoadTrips2 жыл бұрын
Because it isn’t far from where US-61 enters the state to where it exits the state.

What does secondary highway mean because I heard you say Tennessee Secondary highway 175?
@504RoadTrips2 жыл бұрын
It’s just a different functional classification of the state routes. Arterials are secondary and signed with the inverted triangle, while the primaries are signed with the outline of the shape of the state.
