We return to Memphis, Tennessee to complete the loop around the city that we started a few videos back. We drive I-40 East, which forms the northern part of the loop, and then continue east to I-269, which we'll cover in the next video.

The I-40 proposal across midtown Memphis involved traversing Overton Park, an alignment that was fought intensely by local community leaders and activists. Long story short, it was effectively cancelled in a landmark case taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971. The Sam Cooper Boulevard freeway (which runs westward from the eastern 40/240 junction) was originally built as part of I-40 and was the only section of it to be built inside the loop. If you drive it today, you might still see overhead signs on the freeway containing blank spaces left for I-40 shields that were never installed.

They also demolished several bridges and ramps that were built over North Bellevue on the West side of Overton Park. The land right up to the park had been taken for the freeway and all of the residences were demolished back in the early 1970s. After the Supreme Court ruled, the original land owners were given first opportunity to buy the land back from the state.

Fun fact: the western interchange with I-40 and the loop was initially a cloverstack to accommodate the cancelled I-40 alignment. It was rebuilt into the current semi-directional T interchange in the 2000s.

@@atworkstation we’ve found that whenever we stay in a hotel, regardless of what day of the week it is, we can always find it somewhere on whatever cable system they have. Kind of sucks with all of the commercials, but when we’re without our Smart TV, that’s what we have to put up with.
