Stay tuned for 500 miles of railroad tracks and even a few trains!

I had watched a few of your earlier road trips, and got very interested in the US-11 series, especially this segment. I have grandparents and great-grandparents buried in the cemetery at the Old Palestine Church in Nicholson, MS. My father told me that the land for the cemetery was donated by my great-grandfather.

You must have been coming through Picayune on a Sunday or a holiday... there's like no traffic! LOL Picayune is a great little town... The double lanes are new, so fancy... There's a useless traffic circle to the right on Highland Pkwy... sorry you missed it! Did you go through McNeill?? I'll have to check your other videos.

This was the Saturday morning before Mardi Gras. I lived in Picayune for about 9 months 20 years ago. It’s certainly changed a lot!

I’m originally from Picayune, MS. I’m very familiar with Hwy. 11. It’ll also take you to Laurel, MS

This is first time that I will see U.S. Highway 11 outside of Louisiana starting from I-59 after crossing the Pearl River. I look forward to the episodes of the road going forward.

Eventually you will be in concurrent with I-59 at some point. I remember seeing that on the I-59 series.
@504RoadTrips Жыл бұрын
There’s a total of about 20 miles of Hwy 11 that runs concurrent with I-59. Almost half of the concurrency is in this video.

Let me guess: because LA 3081 has u-turn ramps, US 11 was routed to the exit south of the LA 3081 exit.
@504RoadTrips Жыл бұрын
The original route went that way and then crossed I-59’s future location and crossed the Pearl a few miles to the east. Then when I-59 opened, it jumped on there. But to get to the northern exit, you have to cross the Old Pearl, and at some point, the bridge over the Old Pearl fell into disrepair and was closed. They shifted Hwy 11 down to the southern exit at that point. And I believe the latter occurred in the last 25 years or so.

@504RoadTrips EDIT FROM MY NOTES: I was in error with my earlier posting. The first portion of I-59 was opened between current exit 5B and exit 1 in Nicholson, Miss. on August 2, 1962. The twin spans over the West Pearl were completed and I-59 was opened between exits 3 (called the Military Road interchange at that time) and 5B on July 1, 1963. At that time the old US11 bridge over the West Pearl, a wooden structure built around 1928, was barricaded, forcing most Pearl River residents (concentrated just south of this bridge) to add over five miles to their journey north to Missisippi. The bridge was reopened in August '63, but had to be closed for repairs in May 1964. It was opened and closed several times over the next few years until the La. State Highway Board voted to permanently close it as unsafe in Jan. 1968, stating a new interchange (Exit 5A) would be built to serve the village. It repoened one more time in April 1968. My notes end here - I never did determine when the bridge was finally taken down. I did notice that US 11 was not immediately re-routed onto I-59 - it was still running the old route as late as 1966.

@@audubon5425 Thank you for this information. I always wondered what happened to the US 11 bridge over Pearl River. I drove around looking for ruins/remains of the old bridge when I first drove down there. I figured LADOTD was just wanting to save money by rerouting US 11 onto I-59 when it was created. I just hope that doesn't happen to US 90 and the bridges that are closed in that area. 😳😳😳

@@AprilKnapper it was several miles out of the way, and needed replacement. I-59 was a good alternative. So it was closed and eventually removed.
