6-hour road trip to Las Cruces where I was lucky enough to find a well-maintained, low-mileage, 2-owner Mercedes 240D with a manual transmission!

If I were to ever pick up a 240D or 300D turbo that had been well maintained its whole life and still has the original motor (never re-built) while still starting right-up the first time and consuming little to no oil, I would find no point at all in trying to have the motor re-built.

This brings back so much memories too, used to take my mom's '79 powder blue 230 gasoline to college back in 95, it became the car to ride in with friends; great example you Have, and those roadtrips are unique! 👏🏻👏🏻🥳

I bought a 240D in the northern Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY near the Canadian border. It had no muffler barely any brakes and was a death trap. Drove it 7 hours through the mountains and back home to Rochester NY. Car was an absolute beast of a car, had it for 5 years and then it moved on.

Just discovered your channel. I really enjoyed this video. Very informative. I'm really close to deciding to pull the trigger and buy a 1982 240D manual. But I'm completely incompetent at repairing.

dont buy a manual. buy an automatic. manuals have away more issues on the transmission and are actually in fact slower. Theres myth goin about that automatics are slow but thats bc they're vacuume lines are routed WRONG or the cars just lack proper maintance like a fuel system cleanse (including removing fuel tank and clean) ect ect

I have a 1982 240D with manual transmission. I’m also incompetent at repairing. I spent a lot of money sorting out all the mechanical issues that are normal when you buy any classic. But afterwards, I’ve had no issues. Depending on where you live, a manual transmission is one of the best theft deterrents. I thoroughly enjoy my 240D shifting is a lot of fun for me. Whether you buy a 240D with or without a manual transmission it is going to be slow. That’s the joy of it.

Man, I am a in the process of buying a W140 or W123. Torn between the two Mercedes I most love. Your car is awesome. And your videos - they sure deserve a lot more views.

Oof, that is tough. Classic 70's style or double-pane windows and hella luxury? Thank you so much though - that means a lot :) maybe one day.

@@aaron___6014 I have; yes. S320; S500 and the sublime S600. Japanese imports in Dubai. Unmatched feeling of quality. and in w123, the 280E, not the 240D. great car though slow.

Traded my 03 clk430 for an 83 300sd w126. These old diesel Mercedes ,no matter which diesel, are amazing. This is my second and I couldn’t ask for a better daily.

I have a 240D 1983 yellow and rare yellow hubcaps. Power sunroof and original working Becker radio I bought from the original owner in 2016. She was 85 and in failing health. Have only put $1,000 into it. Everything works but the cruise control. Always looking for a new project

I just hit the thumbs up for this vid. I noticed that that 240D stayed below 70 mph and still required rpm's to be anywhere near that speed. New Mexico's interstates, I think are roughly 5,000ft in elevation. And the posted speed limit is 75. As much as I love the W123 Mercedes 240D Diesel, I DON'T think I could EVER drive one out on those particular routes for that reason. Even at 75 in those 75 zones you're still bound to be the slowest car out there. I've driven those routes my share of times to know that for fact. I didn't make it out to New Mexico, but I drove in Arizona which I know is no different from New Mexico in this way. And there's now a total of 10 other states where it had been 75 and raised again to 80. I live in the state of Washington but I've traveled my share of times to the southwest, mostly just to Southern California. Even though the 3 West Coast states still have no posted speed limits higher than 70, California is STILL so fast that I'd just end up putting those harder miles on that 240D just to avoid managing to impede traffic. Even on I-5 in Northern California (north of Sacramento), I'd still be driving 70 in that car where 70 is posted. But getting back into Oregon on I-5 it would drop from 70 down to 65; so that would be a small break for that little motor. But then it'll go back up to 70 again north of Vancouver, WA. SO...….with all that said, if I'm EVER gonna be adventurous as to drive one of those 240s anywhere in the southwest whether it's a round trip or picking one up to drive back home to Washington my plan is to change the oil & filter before the drive and change it again after arriving back home. Or...……. if it's a round trip, change oil and filter 3 times total: before the trip, then somewhere in Southern CA before the drive home, and then back home after the trip is completed. That's just so that the whole motor itself could still be bullet-proof as to still last a long long time. Much better off traveling those routes in a W123 300D Turbo: a lot more horsepower, a lot more torque, and longer stride final drive rear end ratio of 3.07 (2.88 if it's an '85).

You're spot on, about 5k feet elevation. So, after a few years and some more fixes, I'm actually totally comfortable driving this on the interstate. Can do 80 very easily. Just... don't hit a hill. Going over Sedillo Peak on I-40 (8k ft elevation) I can do about 50 haha. If I did a lot of highway travel I would absolutely get a 5-cylinder turbodiesel.

Tach? Who needs those when you can have a GIANT clock?? There isn't one, but there are dots on the speedometer that indicate the maximum speed you can go in each gear.

Yeah, I ended up selling it :( Too many imperfections and it's really boring to drive a bunch of automatics all the time haha. Mmmm yeah, in NM I can deal with no AC, but with humidity? Super nope.

Don't drive that car in Texas on two lane roads with 75 mph speed limits. You will get plenty of middle finger salutes from people passing you.
