My dream W116 would be one with an OM 606 big turbo swap and all the bells and whistles out of the 450 6.9.

I tried to analyse over and over why I love so much the W123. I love fast cars, I hate Diesel, the 240d that I inherited from my grand father was a car I hated when I was a kid. But today, almost 35 years later I am obsessed by my W123. Despite the obvious, the build quality, I would say that the general balance of the car is almost perfect. The driving position, the choice of materials, the way everything is falling into place, the ride quality despite the noise, and the harmony of the body lines no matter from what angle you are looking at it. The W123 is a really special car, that works as an extension of yourself, to communicate with the road. Today's car don't communicate anymore. Adopt a W123

When I found a 79 240D for 2k, I thought about it overnight and bought it in the morning. I've owned quite a few cars over my lifetime. My 250D ranks up there with the best of them. It's odd that the KZbinr of this video has such a different experience with his 240D than I had. I had just the opposite experience in city driving and highway driving. In the city my car was okay. Excellent as an easy and comfortable drive. On the highway, once it got up to highway speeds. It just seemed to beg for more. It even felt at times the gas peddle would go down a bit on It's own. I loved this car and to this day I hate that I sold it. Later as I was in the process of purchasing a C230 Sport car. I asked the salesman if I would get the same experience driving the C230 as I had with my 240D. The salesman leaned back in his seat and said, "absolutely no"! He said that I'd never find a car that size with such a great ride ever again.

I am the 3rd care giver of a 1978 300SD car number 254. Motor number is 154. Have had the car for over 20 years. It get 25 mpg town 30 open road. It is a low milage car 733,000 miles. It is resting because the tranny messed up. Also have a 83 300D with 676,000 miles. It is my farm beater. Also have a 79 240D for many years. Few years back found a 70 220D I looked at new a low miles. The gal that had it did not check the oil. She ran it low killed the rid bearings. Plus also have a 1980 L1116 Benz truck. Used for hauling hay around my farm.

Built to endure. NOT like today’s disposable vehicles with intentionally built-in obsolescence marketed to us as environmentally friendly. The large steering wheel like that on my W201 is deliberate to ensure steering control should the power steering fail. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸 It’s major flaw is hidden rust.

My 1980 240d manual runs good. 85 mph. Cranks even without glow plugs. But will NOT take off on a steep driveway. No clutch slip. Just won't take off. No power. New fuel tank. Filters. Or is it supposed to be this way?

I’m sorry what did you say for the Main Vacuum pump why do you need to rotate the engine to install back on ?
@takeiteasy_tv
@takeiteasy_tv 6 ай бұрын
It's hard to describe, but basically the vacuum pump is "gear" driven so you have to align the engine gear with the pump gear. You should be able to figure it out when you're looking at it.

My 1980 240d manual runs great. Cranks in cold easily even without glow plugs activated. Leaks oil from a lot of gaskets. Must fix that. But....in a steep driveways or steep roads it will NOT start off. No clutch slippage. Just won't. But, on highway it will run at least 85 mph. Surely Mercedes didn't design a car with this limitation? I see super steep Alpine roads and driveways, parking lots etc... and as a taxi....how could this work in a steep mountain city? So...what's the deal? Any tips? Is this normal for a 240d manual? Thanks

That car is exactly like mine (U.S. Spec, 1979 240D, 4 speed manual, White with Bamboo interior). Mine has the rare factory rear seat headrests. My only piece of advice is to check the suspension bushings and rubber bits. After 40 years, they were gone on my car (as expected though).

Consider buying the nicest and newest 240D you can find. I’m not sure about the W123, but it’s possible they switched steel suppliers in 1980. The Belgian steel tended to be prone to rust. True or folk legend… not sure. Also the newer cars had an external clutch slave. That can turn a day job into a five minute job.

I have '76 240D that I inherited from family. I will admit my knowledge of mechanics is amateur, but I'd love to be able to begin to work on the vehicle myself. OP or anyone else have a path of suggestion towards learning mechanics and learning to work on my 240D? I know there are countless amounts of resources out there, but its information overload out there too, and so it's good to have mentorship every once and awhile. Cheers everyone!

Nice! Congrats :) I got my start as a mechanic just reading forums and figuring it out as I go. Google is an amazing tool! Of course, start easy and don't do anything too complicated or dangerous (i.e. brakes). You might even take it to a local Mercedes shop and have them do a full inspection. This will give you a laundry list of fixes and they might offer you some advice too.

A couple of tips: *Sleeve the radiator. It can save many hundreds of $$, and the sleeve cost pennies. *Fabricate a drip shield that mounts over the drivers side engine mount. The lift (primer) pumps leak just a very tiny amount of diesel . That diesel drips onto the rubber engine mount. I’ve seen the mount deteriorate and have to be replaced in a matter of weeks. I have no idea what happens to the factory drip shield, but never seen a used model with the shield still in the car. Maybe I should begin to fabricate and sell drip shields, and soft polyurethane left side engine mounts.

I have watched this video probably 5 times. It was a big help in adjusting the valves on my '82 240D today! Took most of the day, but I like to go slow and double/triple check things. Two of them were extremely tight and way out of adjustment. I took the glow plugs out and used the power steering pulley to turn the engine, it worked great and I got to check the condition of the flow plugs. Next, I will install new nozzles. It drove better and seemed to have more power after the valve adjustment. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for such a great video. I'm 46 years old, and I've been driving 80s Mercedes for 27 years. I've always favored the 300SD W126, but I've owned three 240Ds as well. One of the best cars I've ever owned in my life was a 1983 240D manual. My ex-wife totaled the car in bad weather years ago, but the car did its job; the car gave its life to save hers. I'm grateful for that. I have a 1980 240D manual and a 1981 240D automatic. As well as a couple of 300SDs. There will never be another car built, ever, like the 1980s Mercedes diesels. As you alluded to, the simplicity in design is one of the reasons that these 40+-year old cars are still going. Thanks again for the video. Really enjoyed it.
