This is gonna be a long message. HAHA Hi from Calgary, Thanks for posting. I feel like it has been a while, but it is great to know you are all good on the home front. I get concerned when you park so close to the river. God forbid anything would happen. Have you thought about making a wooden tire stopper? Also, it would be cool by the back door if you had a slider to slide a compartment. I love the new additions to the van. That flip-up table is stellar. The slide-out drawers are awesome. I was referring to that for the back door compartment under the bed frame. That table is awesome how it moves. Did you Mcgiver that, or did you buy it from Home Depot? Also, I noticed you have a small electrical generator. You could save a ton of money if you had an electric stove. It would be perfect to plug in. You could have the propane as a back up. You could run an extension cord and have the electrical counter stove top on the flip up table. I put the link at the bottom. I am not too sure about the voltage, but let me tell you, you would save a lot on propane. I like the bating technique with the fire wood. Congrats on finding the drone. Here is a link to Amazon: www.amazon.ca/Elite-Gourmet-EDB-302BF-Countertop-Temperature/dp/B09RX2WGD3/ref=asc_df_B09RX2WGD3/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=578818794426&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7172134553104901189&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001319&hvtargid=pla-1694855035807&psc=1&mcid=24024f87394039de8bc52eac207a73fb

Hey man thanks a lot for all the info! There's still lots of little details I want to build before it's actually "complete". I like the electrical idea. I think we are going to have a bigger propane tank sealed off in the back, that way we're not being wasteful with those 1lb bottles and a 10 lb bottle goes wayyyyy further than the little tanks. I McGiver'd the swivel desk. Got that idea from another channel who'd done the same build (there's not a lot of conversions on KZbin for the passenger van, so it was a lot of trial and error). Thanks again for being here. Cheers and happy new year !

Great presentation which I will come around to, lol. I know this cabin well, the history of the outercoast cabin history and working in natural resouces for the governrment know the ins and outs of why this is here, and rare! Durring the late 60's and upcertain folks with no desire to work and on welfare desided free water front homes would be nice, and these little drift wood cabins strated popping up in numbers. Every two weeks you could pick them up hitch hiking to get their cheques and groceries. One of the most popular arears being the beach featured in the video begining with the waterfall, the other being what is now Long Beach park. After much fuss from those not able to afford waterfront and the fact the beaches at the end of those in the know trails with beaches had....hippies all over them, big brother took action. So you understand my sacasim, the last time I was at the beach with the waterfall I was the hippy, then I became the man, lol. One misserable drizzly, foggy, cold December day a buddy and I went out to that remote beach dressed like Alaskan fishers for the weather, to escape the crowds, talk to the locals and take some LSD. We passed cabin after cabin, oil lamps all going, the odd shaddow in a window, and by the time we hit our turn around spot and sat for a break we had acccumulated the friendship of 5 dogs and 2 goats we could not shake, hardly a pritine remote expeience, picking up livestock, really? So can you imagine that beach today if that kind of thinking went on. Somewhere about this time they are getting rid of the ability to homestead because of folks getting into those issue on rights. Shortly after this I join the MInistry of Forests and within one day find myself on a government live aboard boat heading down the Inside Passage. Second day someone spots a cabin tucked into a bay off the passage and we stop dead, one guy grabs a pice of paper and a stappler and gets me to come for the experience, evidentaly do want to usualyy risk two emplyees??? We jump in the beach acccess boat and when we hit the beach I Note he has rasied the engine but left the mottor running, y poor form I'm thinking. Now he says run and keep your eyes open for anyone. Then as we sprint across the beach he out lines he will run up to the door, attach the paper, turn and run, watch our backs. As we sprint back to the boat he says we have no idea if the owner saw us and is hiding in the bush with a gun. Then he says the boat is scheduled by in a a couple of weeks and if the cabin is still there we do the same thing with a can of gas, he runs it in, sprinkles it around , throws the can in and sets it up, then run again, burning all posessions. At this point of my life I see the rules have changed and what happened to all those cabins, lol. Now to the cabin in question. My histroy with the cabin issue and Forest Service office mapping, I m able to note newer road construction but along the ocean at one point, very unusual and a great opportunity to scope out the next great access. On another map I had noted three cabins left along the coast, in the area, wow. At that time we targeted one on the far side of the bridge and made it driving over the bridge and river mentioned, it quickly brushed out and after about a km of walking through bear scat we called it. I am laughing at your experience as I tell all non Canadian tourists if they want to see one I will direct them there and north, its more like living with them, lol. We did find this cabin on the way back and also enjoyed a night. Later when telling of our adventures of course the locals say the other cabin burned down, only two cabins left? The next map change I wont mention, got me up that way with a van, travel trailer and 2 kayaks and camped on far side of the river. On this trip we find this cabin on a walk, a man and woman on the deck. But they made one fatal mistake, they waved us up to "their" cabin, I had to chat. And with all due respect he gives us the whole story, guy from back east, meets local girl at the cabin, they decide to call it theirs, a love story with a hint of back off my turf. As politlly as possible I explain things out here, and I dont want to threaten him so I just leave him with well dont be surprized when the cabin has been occupied while you went for groceries and you have to wait to get your turn again. The concept was explaind, my problem is torn. I know the history, this is maybe one of two, what do I do? I'm the guy with the gass can, but also like staying in the few that do exist. Im the guy who wants life to be live and let live, but dispise folks that cant hear what the heck is expected from them when it layed in front of them. BY this time at work there has been a a afmily occupying an Island on a lake. AS they developed the Island over 30 years most igored them being well off the path, exept when agencies just bounced any attpt for them to get paper on the site. I went through years of our office dealing with trsspass issues until he walked into a lawyers office trying to transpher the island, house, two barns, to his son. Ministry waited for family to go shopping, flew in and burnt it to the goriund. So I walk away., thinking I sure dont want to tell those co-workers? A couple of years pass and I am walking in the bay between the river and the bay towards the cabin and note that wood stove, sitting in the sand above the tide mark. As we round the corner and first site of the cabin it is obvious the site has been significantly developed, trails, outhouse, shower. Then when he opens with did you pass the stove we could haul all the way, its for our cabin. he had no idea we had talked? By this time I work in water management for the ministry, closley tied with Lands, so now I'm up on my land tenuring. Always wanting to be polite, I say wow, great things you have done, I had no idea you could do this type of thing. So I decide to take the baffel them with a little knowledge route, wow, you got a land lease out here, how did you do that? At the first verbal indication he was not familar I started looking up at the clearing saying, ya where are your cornerposts, good thing you keep a copy inside posted, now he's double baffled. Just enough to expect him to look it up and hit his brick wall, and we left. This video is the first I have seen the place since, so a great thrill to know it is still there and as slimy looking as I know it felt, lol. I also in my time in water management worked on the floor of the biologist who covers all of the larger mammals on the Island which was a welth of coffee room information. So what I leared about that specific area and bears is its the seaweed, and in that spot piled 3 meters high on the rocky beach south of the river mouth, about a meter down the bears excavate I think rotted stuff, but deep. Camping right on the other side of the river we woke up to the seaweed with craters in it, we heard nothing. Im also very, very, very glad you felt free to stay, and it was freed up!! I dont think my bit about how we do things around hear was some form of threat, lol, As you have treated it, I would like your viewers to know is that this is not just an in the know spot, the cabin exitance is a Canadian gray area. As a Forest Officer, how we do it means, its Crown land and 2 weeks is the limit. This what I referenced up front, this is expresed well. We are so mean us Canadians we just want to give everyone a chance. As a local and one of the few that knows these spots you have to be aware this can all go away, very fast. Now the Canadian gray, you are breaking no rules, you may camp if front of the cabin if you like, use his shower and outhouse, all illegal developments now on Crown Land. So our secret is....dont make waves.........and dont assurte some bizarre claim to land......and share, its free! With that said, we will fine the hell out of you if you cut a tree, catch a fish without a licence, or drive your vehicle through a fish stream, but those nasty jestures are actually so that you guys have something pristeen to enjoy. And I have to laugh at the thought of a potentail tourist saying I think Ill go there and enjoy that, as stated its not a B&B, I would hate to travel from around the world to find out its busy, lol. You may laugh at this but I have encountered this dedication to destination just a few beaches north of this one. As I sat at the junction of an access trail and a beach a familiy broke onto the beach and appeared to be just intereted in that. Turns out a friend, back in Germany said they should come to this one beach, as a far as they were concerned they had met their vacation goals after renting a car 6,000 miles away not appreciating the size of Canada (they took the long way), however they did get thier second goal which was running face to face with a bear on the trail in, another happy tourist. Sorry for the wordy coverage, but this is a unique, dont rock the boat thing and just wanted readers to appreciate why you can enjoy it. And particularly in showing me the system still works as long as you dont get greedy. This whole weird juggling act can be best explained as being an atempt to have every beach running with dogs and livestock and can be best summarized by parraphrasing an old potato chip commercial.......if I give you one....Ide have to give one to everybody, lol.

Hey Mark, thanks for taking the time to write this out. We appreciate the good stories and agree that no one should be able to think that they can simply claim a place as their own. These beautiful places are for everyone to enjoy and should be treated with great respect. Cheers.

This reminds me of our winter living in a small off grid RV in the mountains above Powell River, that was the year of the floods, and of our trip to Tahsis years earlier. Nostalgia level: high. We carried 2 canoes on top of my 4Runner the entire year using 2x6 boards. You get a lot of looks when you do that outside of Ontario! 😂

We were hoping to see the village but I guess this is a camping / outdoors video.
