I own a '73 Buick Electra Limited, triple black 2-door hardtop. 455 c.i. big block [remember those??] , 4 bbl. Quadrajet carb, and a points-type distributor. JUST turned 20k miles! My dad bought it new Dec. 1972. Smooth ride, lots of power, about 7-8 mpg. You are right Wizard, there's NOTHING like those big old land yachts!!! Dad had a 71 Olds Delta Royale 2 door, with the 455. I didn't know Buick had that cool dash layout, just like Dads Olds. About the ride: I'd have to agree. My old man loved big cars with big engines. He brought home a 64 Buick Wildcat with air. They used to let him take a car home for the weekend back then. Mom said NO! So In 66 He bought a Bonneville 4 door hardtop. I passed my drivers test in that barge. Thanks for your very entertaining videos, and above all the honesty, and integrity you bring to the repair business.

Like you I love the way these old cars ride. I had a ‘74 LTD that rode nice, and my father had a ‘79 Lincoln Mark V that rode like a cloud, and that spoiled me for life. I have been so disappointed with how the ride of cars since the ‘90’s have gotten stiffer and less comfortable (had to follow the lead of the Europeans 👎) and now that I’m 60 with a bad back I need something that rides nice. I could go buy a Mercedes or other high dollar new car, but it’s not gonna ride like I want. So after binge watching a bunch of your videos I’ve decided to get a nice, clean ‘05 Park Avenue or LeSabre with the 3800 engine. It rides better than anything you can buy now, parts are still readily available, and I can maintain it myself. And it doesn’t cost a fortune to put one in the driveway. Thank you CW for the informative videos you put out, it really helps a lot of us make some big decisions for the better. Liked & subbed!

Wizzy, this if funny! Back in the day I use to own a '71 Centurion convertible same color green, white interior, white top, which we eventually changed to black, trying to keep a white convertible top clean with a car not garaged and driven in all weather including snow in NY was impossible! Mine was VERY loaded, almost every option! Power windows, locks, seats, seat back release solenoids (I have never seen that before!), trunk release in glove compartment, antenna in windshield, tilt, cruise, A/C, AM/FM, steering wheel rim blow horn (actually didn't like it, not so convenient in a emergency blow lol), white leather seats, had the cool Buick sport rims (one of the sharpest OEM rim designs ever made I think), dual exhaust with resonators (don't know if that was an option or if all had it, eventually the resonators were not replaced during a exhaust system replacement, they were expensive! Had a throatier exhaust sound without them when you got on it ;-)... The only options it didn't have that I can think of was the goofy speed alert warning buzzer, stereo FM, or 8 track and I don't remember if telescopic was available on Buick then. I know Caddy had it... The Centurion was a "hand me down" from Dad, who bought it used around 1974 privately from a Buick dealer salesman. I remember going with Dad to the salesman house when I was a kid. It became my car just after high school (1980). The other funny thing is the Buick Wildcat you showed the magazine ad, a "1969 wildcat" was the previous "hand me down" from my father (brown 2 door coupe) when I was in high school '77 - '80, and the car I learned how to drive on and took my road test in! 430ci, single exhaust, 4bbl, A/C power windows, the rare upgraded interior and steering wheel, most every other wildcat I have seen had the cheaper door panels and steering wheel, also had the Buick sport rims with the cool finned wildcat logo center caps. Large finned magnesium drum brakes (on all 4). I remember I asked how come these brake drums don't rust? When I took them in to be cut once at a brake shop. The owner said because they are magnesium with steel inserts! Then he asked me what kind of truck are they from? He had a shocked look on his face when I told him no truck, they are out of my Buick car! lol Also had a factory passenger side view mirror, I wished the Centurion had that! Power antenna, rear window blower defogger and map light and switch built into the bottom of the rear view mirror! (never seen that before, but very easy to not know it's there, Dad didn't know it was there driving it for 8 years before me! One day while driving around 1980/81 I went around a sharp turn and heard a odd metallic crack noise and the car started handling loose from the rear end, like something was out of adjustment alignment wise! On inspection I saw the frame cracked on one side from rot, just forward of the rear wheel well area. Salted roads of NY winters!... Unfortunately that sent an otherwise pretty nice car to the junkyard! I was sad at the time, but excited to get the Centurion convertible as a 18/19 year old kid... Dad bought a used '76 Buick Electra for himself, 455 again but low HP by '76, at least that too had the cool Buick sport rims... I didn't like that car, grew too big, boaty, over stuffed and over fluffed cloth seats. Although it always ran fine... All of our Buicks went 150ish thousand miles with no major issues until it was time to get rid of them and back then people weren't on top of regular oil changes as we mostly are now... 19 years with my '99 4 cyl. Toyota Camry, over 310k miles with no major issues ever, still drives smooth and quiet! As you can see I choose my cars carefully based on reliability (after the Centurion was a '79 Caddy Coupe de Ville 425ci 4bbl for a few years, and then my beloved '88 Toyota Supra Turbo 5spd for 10 years until 166k miles).... But I always miss my big block gas guzzling Buicks!!! ;-)

Thank you for taking the time for sharing this. I'm from Europe where I doubt any car was available with 455ci during the 70's. And you got to drive in high school, another thing no European experiences (I remember my first time in America being amazed at the size of the car park for the local school near where I was staying. "They have so many teachers ! " ... "No silly, that one is for the pupils" :). To have a car with even 2.0L in 1980 marked you out as a big shot where I'm from - gas prices were just too high. Saw a nice Riviera during the summer at a car meet here in Czech Republic where I now live. These huge American beasts look very, very exotic here in Europe rumbling around at car meets. Greetings from Prague, CZ and all the best !

@@Czechbound Thanks buddy... Yes we didn't know how lucky we were then. Fairly cheap gas, big cars with big reliable engines and air conditioning and comfortable seats. I knew an old timer that went to Europe in the 1950's and saw all these tiny cars like the BMW isetta and the Messerschmitt and a few others and he said he thought something strange happened during his flight and he landed on another planet where they used cars that looked like big bugs to get around! 😂😂😂 Also I remembered one day about 1982 with my Buick Centurion I pulled into the Buick dealer to see if I could get a replacement trim part for it. As I was walking to the parts department a guy comes running out of the showroom and over to me looking all upset and said, is that your green Buick Centurion convertible in the parking lot? I said yes why, do you need me to move it? He said no, that use to be my car. I sold it many years ago, I want to buy it back! I said you sold it to my father. I was there as a 10 year old kid at your house when my father bought it. And no I don't want to sell it, I love it! It looks extra sexy with the top down! ;-) He looked depressed! LoL... I am sorry I sold it a few years later...

this is why i'm so glad that at least most cars that sold in any decent numbers have online communities of people to help out with fixing and restoring them. I've noticed that most online forums and fb groups always have a few members who know the right people with the right facilities and are willing to front the manufacturing costs to just reproduce parts themselves. There's a special gauge for my old Japanese SUV that is no longer made but there's a guy who has an overseas manufacturer reproduce them in batches once in a while just for the online community members - and there's another guy who works with some of the factories that originally produced parts and does the same thing. These are the unsung heroes who are taking on the responsibility themselves to allow these great classics to stay on the road in a time when the original manufacturers couldn't care less. I think online car communities could even take things a step further and have some kind of annual "dues" where members can chip in a small amount of money and maybe once or twice a year commission a factory to reproduce a batch of parts like this that have recently become completely unavailable through the normal distributors- I'm pretty sure that's what will end up happening with all of these older vehicles so long as there are still people around who are dedicated to keeping them running.

My dad was a Buick loyalist since I was a kid. In l8 '69 he had a '70 Buick Riviera GS. Prior to that another Riviera 65. When he bought his '73 Riviera GS Stage 1, he was quite dissatisfied with the power . He had gotten used to the hi compression from '70. Every year we would visit a relative on another state. These cars were Uber comfortable Period. On the interstate highway he would flex that 455 muscle to the so-called muscle cars of that era. In '76 he ended up buying a Caddy Eldorado w/500cid & fuel injection. The salesperson convinced it would save on gas,NOT. Since it came with more ponies & even more torque 400lbft, he used em all. Took him a bit to get used to FWD. I would ask him, wouldn't you rather have a Buick!!!. Big block 455♥️

I bought a 73 "almost new". It had the 350 V-8 with the smaller auto trans. I treated the car gently, but the trans failed. The shop said that GM tried to save money by using the smaller trans with such a heavy car. The trans was rebuilt with a shift kit, and I had no further problems. Cars with the 455 engine got the bigger 400 trans, which had a good reputation. Looking back, it was a great car, but the gas mileage was not great.

Boy I miss these big old GM full size full frame cars, just like you said Wizard nothing today has the ride these old road locomotives had. Back in the late 70's we drove my uncles clean '63 Buick Lesabre from tennessee to Illiniois non stop except for gas and bathroom and werent even tired when we got home. If I won the lottery one of the first cars id buy is one of the big old GM land yachts, I miss that cushy ride so much, if I want handling ill get another car for that these big old cars were great to cruise on the highway.

Car Wizard, you’re absolutely right, the last true American car I owned was a 1988 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham sedan 5.0L. No problems lifting this car up on a ramp. I have at present a 2012 BMW 1 series, and a 2015 Volvo V70 SE-LUX, and believe me, I have to be so careful when jacking these cars up, there’s loads of plastic underneath that’s easily broken.

Loved this video. My Dad had the four door version of this Centurian that I drove a lot. The ride was awesome, soaked up the bumps and felt like riding a cloud. The only negative I remember was all the pollution gear and hoses on the 455 . They could develop a vacuum leak and really rob you of power. Brings back great memories... Thanks Wizard.

That sweet ride could do with a light wet sand and buff. It's decent now but it would shine like a diamond. The white vinyl interior could also be much brighter white with a good cleaning. I'd love to have it. I had a 1978 El Dorado years ago and miss that ride.

Love these big old GMs, I think the Caprice was the Chevy equivalent and the Bonneville (or maybe Catalina?) was the Pontiac version. The CB under the dash is a nice period correct accessory.

Caprice was the equivalent of the Pontiac Grand Ville during the early to mid 70s. The Impala was the Bonneville equivalent. The Bel Air was the equivalent of the Executive in 1970, and Catalina after that. The Biscayne had been the Catalina equivalent

@@ad356 CB's were big in cars because there was no cell phones..no other ways of commmunication..and it was a fad back in the mid 70's. I remember guys that were "pushing" with amplifiers...you could here them talking over AM band radio or over UHF tv...as they drove by the house. They were using illegal signal amplifiers that would overwhelm tv and radio reception as they drove by...i remember seeing a guy in his car driving by and hearing him over the TV as i saw him talking into his transmitter mic.

Buick made some truly fantastic cars over the years. Centurions and Wildcats are among my favorite cars of all time. They and the Riviera were awesome 'sporty' luxury cars, while the Electra was the perfect luxury cruising boat and the Skylark/GS cars were fantastic muscle cars.

Very cool! That hood emblem is very rare! I found one on ebay for $200! Can't even find the deck lid emblem. I love oem buick emblems. I love my 03 buick lesabre! Nothing compares to the ride of it. The 3.8 V6 is absolutely bulletproof, if you sort out the intake gasket problem along with the coolant elbows. Mine is absolutely mint and beautiful, will never sell it though I've been offered $6500 for it. I'd take the olderish buicks over any modern car any day! Love your channel!!! The truly unique feature of the ‘71-‘75 (and ‘76 Eldo) full-size GM’s is the scissor drop top...same top in all lines. Top frame folds inside itself and then scissors behind the rear seat giving a full width rear seat, great for parades. I have a 75 Pontiac Grand Ville vert and it’s an awesome top, shared with this Buick. Buick moved its convertible to the LeSabre line in ‘74 and ‘75.

A beautiful car! In 1984 I went cruising the Fort Lauderdale shore back during THE REAL spring break in my friend's mother's 1970s Oldsmobile 98 2-door convertible, the sistership to this Buick. The highlight of that night was when a dozen barely-clad very happy young ladies climbed aboard for a couple blocks. That night the Olds realized it's highest purpose.

Hubcap centers have the Tri-Shield. I had it's Chevrolet cousin. 1973 Impala Custom with the 400 small block and TH400 with a 12 bolt limited slip. The car was a custom order from a GM executive and was power everything. All the bells and whistles. The original build sheet was still in tact and under the back seat and the best part, it had 36,000 original documented miles. Same color family, but with light green interior and black vinyl roof. That one was loaded up! Actually GM made full-size convertibles in all lines up to 1975 except the 1976 Eldorado was the final factory convertible until model year 1983. My grandparents had a '73 LeSabre coupe bought in 1974 and my grandma totaled it in 1976 going over a railroad track (maybe to fast) and becasue the car dipped so low due to the weight and soft springs the frame caught on the tracks and bent the frame. I think the crossing was probably in poor condition becasue I think it happened to others in the same spot that year. I have never heard of this happening in modern sedans with much stiffer suspensions and lighter weight.

True about the parts being hard to find. Couldn't find a specific chip for my 32 year old Volvo cluster so I had to repair it. Or the fuel pump debacle. One site claimed it was the OEM part, got it and it was a genuine Volvo part but it was for a newer year. Needless to say I had to make it fit.

You can get that car to handle like dream. I have done these things: Monroe coil-over shocks in the back, I think they are called "load levelers". Monroe Severe Duty shocks in the front. Boxed lower rear control arms and rear anti-sway bars (both OEM options). The nice ride with still be there, but the car will make flatter cornering and more positive response for you.
