Great video Tom! Lots of great suggestions in the comments!!! I think I'd take the plastic off the remaining cover and paint that section black on each after cleaning them. I'm guessing you'll need to apply a finish coat of lacquer or some kind of sealer to protect them more.. ??

I've done a couple of those. On one I used a very thick enamel paint and textured it. You can also just make new wood scales. If you use glue or epoxy, tape the inside of the liner so that the glue stays out of your knife.

Great ideas, Cheesy! I thought about painting them as that would probably be the easiest way to do it. Thanks for watching, my friend.

You should think about getting an ultrasonic cleaner. You'd be surprised at how well the loosen junk in nooks and crannies. My advice: Forget the covers entirely and make new slab slides out of wood or plastic. You can probably attach them with a good 2 part epoxy. You could also pop off the other plastic cover for the shell, clean it up and use a decent nail polish to add a lacquer coat between the bolsters and reattach the original covers.

Lol. You know, I've been meaning to pick one up. BUT! I always find a knife to buy. I suppose I should start saving up my bubble gum money, and go ahead and get one. Thanks for watching, Tobias. Keep charging!

I'd replace both. Glue burlap on the handles and cover with polyurethane. You could also use any wallpaper you desired. Alternatively, you could glue a wood veneer, which is very thin, but if you use veneer, I think you'll have to fabricate a clamp to hold the veneer til it drys. 😊
@knifedelights74738 ай бұрын
You're right about the veneer, and in the past I've tried to figure out how to make a clamp. I appreciate your suggestions my friend. Keep charging!

Thanks for sharing this old knife, great job on the clean-up. As far as what to do with the covers, I'd have to agree with what others have already said here and make new ones. ☺👍Regardless of whatever you decide to do, I'm sure it will turn out great. Take care my friend and Cheers!

Use the bolster/liners to make an impression in some clay to use as a mold for some resin.
@knifedelights74738 ай бұрын
That's a good suggestion. I'd like to someday have a way of melting brass and pouring the bolster/liner replacements. However, I like your suggestion for resin! Thanks for watching, jspr!

If you’d like to use wood you can use a wood dowel wrapped with course sand paper to contour the inside to fit the existing scales. You can do the same with stag, just split your antler and contour with a dowel and sandpaper. I’ve used this dowel and sandpaper method to open barrel channels on gun stocks for free floating barrels

Wow, that's a great idea to make the covers concave a little bit. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I appreciate you watching, my friend.
@bdh39498 ай бұрын
A full replacement of the covers would probably be best for the long run. Maybe an amber bone or something a bit wild. However a simple fix is to re-use your covers, you could simply paint several light coats on the blank side then dip the whole cover into a poly mix to preserve it.

I like your idea to try some bone! Thanks for your suggestions, bdh. I appreciate you watching, my friend.

That's a tough one! I'm thinking that gluing on new bolster-less scales from thin wood or micarta, with little divots on the underside to accommodate the knife pins would be the way to go. But shaping them just right will be challenging. I've seen videos of people doing that. I still have my first pocketknife - about 65 years old! It originally had shell scales with a decorative plastic wrap, but the plastic peeled off years ago. It's a nostalgia piece and not a carry knife anymore so I've just kept it as is, with the bare metal shell scales. I will look forward to seeing what you end up doing with this project.

Some good suggestions so far personally iv used sticky back plastic in the past as in the uk there are a lot of old Richards of Sheffield knives around that are the same clam shel design,you can get it in lots of different natural patterns simply cut to size wrap and stick it round the handle you can even replace the pins for a more natural look 👍
