Let me help you understand this better and explain it better I hope. The bottom brake is worn because the brake shoes is not being held in the Center of the drum. It is down in the drum. It is not being held in the Center of the drum as the cam and cam bushing is worn simple. Cam and camshaft are some of the most overlooked brake parts on a brake job. Good cams and bushings can extend the brake life as much as 60%. Brake cam seem to last longer on trucks than trailers as they grease more often. Always use metal bushings when you can get them the plastic stuff is junk. By the best brake material you can don’t by buy price the parts are cheep it the down time labour that is expensive get good brakes There kits you can get to put cam tubes on trailers that don’t have them from factory. Cam tubes are way better than cheep open cams. A good brake job done properly on a trailer running the Rocky Mountain should last 250,000 to 300,000 miles that is 2. 1/2 to 3 years. That has been are fleet experience. When we do a brake job we change everything brakes drums hardware it cheaper in the long run we have the states to prove it. All the best.

Is it possible that the s-cam shaft bushings would be the only part you would have to replace? Or should the shaft always be replaced when new bushings go in? Great information in your video! Thanks!
@mgventure1 Жыл бұрын
It depends on how worn the camshaft is. If you have more than 0.20 (Bendix/ Spicer brakes) vertical lift movement you are beyond their spec. tolerance. You need to make it less than 0.10. If you can do it with just bushings that's great. The Meritor vertical lift spec tolerance is 0.30.

It would be helpful to know the "symptoms" when you do these videos. For example, would there be noise or movement that the driver would hear or feel prior to the brakes/chamber getting to this condition?

He said the shoes will wear uneven
@SLINKYs_Mama2 жыл бұрын
@@Sbowling1979 yes, but is it something that you feel while you're driving or is there a specific sound that the driver may hear? I am not mechanically inclined and I have to depend on professionals to let me know what to look for and it would help to know noises or activities related to the specific problem.
@mgventure1 Жыл бұрын
If a driver is driving probably not. If listening at the wheel when there is a brake application you may hear the slapping of the worn camshaft if it is really worn such as the one in this video. Acceptable wear for vertical lift on a camshaft is less than 0.20 on a Bendix Spicer and less than 0.30 on a Meritor/Rockwell. The industry says that if vertical lift is at 0.10 that movement needs to be addressed with either new camshaft bushings or camshafts or both.

When you are under the truck or trailer and air supplied. Push up on the s cam shaft between the wheel and slack adjuster. Do this before putting grease in. Putting grease in will tighten it up and make it snug. I check brake lining and signs of oil or grease and push up on the shaft then I adjust brakes then disconnect air supply and grease. Also I connect emergency and service air supply and check my brake chambers for air leaks.

you need to go to a good brake school/class before you start spouting stuff on the internet, worn scam and bushing cause push rod travel, the bottom shoe being worn down is from the spring being over stretched when installed and dragging on the drum, the wheel locking up has a flat spot on the roller, left and right scams only count when the brake chamber is on the front of the load housing or axle housing on trailers, each truck manufacture has a bit different max movement. volvo has max at .46, you can do a bendix online class at home on your computer.

Hope youre still around! Having problem getting a Volvo tractor rear brake to release. Everyone just says beat on the drum!🤪 Its got shields hiding the shoes. And ive let some pressure off of the cam switch... per a mechanic i know, whos busy hauling grain. Ima farmer btw. Not working. Are there other reasons a wheel wont turn beside a locked brake? Im hoping not bad bearing in wheel! Guessing ill have to make 100% sure brake is releasing. Idk, sorry im all over the place. But its my dad's operation, and i feel like beating that drum is beating a dead horse! He also says hit wheel rim... everyone ive seen says hit drum. Is that good or not? All seems bad imo!😅 im denting rim! So pretty sure Ive got the force! Just seems something else amiss here. Would appreciate advice! Ssl!

Wheel chocks so truck can't roll ( don't skip this step) air both tanks to max pressure then release parking brake. Then with a tool or an assistant apply the brake pedal. Then go listen for leaks. You can also bring a spray bottle full of soap and spray hoses valves chambers and like four bubbles .

can u do or explain a disk conversion from S cam drums and is it feasible…

I had this problem a few months ago. My symptom was grease came out inside the drum when the seal on the S cam failed. Driving threw the grease out inside the wheel. Looked like a wheel seal leak on the inside of the tire except it was grease. Also I had the irregular shoe wear he spoke of. The braking power decrease is only slightly noticeable at first. There was no smoking or squealing on my Pete. Perhaps the excess movement could also cause a slack adjuster to fail prematurely.
@JagdeepSingh-wv1ry5 ай бұрын
Did you have any wheel not locking issue too cuz i’m having that issue. I replaced my brake shoes and drums, I didn’t notice any major difference in the brake power and also noticed that during wet conditions, my wheels don’t lock when braking.
@caseydale47315 ай бұрын
@JagdeepSingh-wv1ry I'm not sure I clearly understand your question. You should have ABS on whatever it is you're driving. "Locking up" is an undesirable thing because it will flat spot tires. I never want my slacks adjusted so tight they lock up during service. Only when parked. Slacks adjust about 1/2 round backed off with full air psi when you do it. Anyway, maybe the quick air release feature on ABS valve might under your 5th wheel might be worth an inspection. Also if your slacks are bad they will not hold adjustment properly.
@JagdeepSingh-wv1ry5 ай бұрын
@@caseydale4731 I meant to say that in wet conditions my 3 drive axle brakes barely works. One works fine. The wheels should lock in order for abs to work. But I noticed that only one tire locks which does not have abs sensor. I don’t understand what is causing this. Under normal conditions brakes on all four wheels work fine.
@caseydale47315 ай бұрын
@@JagdeepSingh-wv1ry when you are parked with the brakes set, how long is the pushrod from the brake chamber to the slack adjuster? More like 2 inches or 5?
@caseydale47315 ай бұрын
@@JagdeepSingh-wv1ry my concern is that you have bad slack adjusters. If you have 3 bad ones then it would be difficult to stop. Rain naturally makes stopping more difficult because less traction. How good are your tires?
