Totally agree! I've worked on maximas and grand prixs and let's just say Pontiac (even the G8) has a lot to learn. I mean, installing a new radio required me to drill out screws because they were torqued so tight. The G8 was finger tight, I kid you not.

Congrats on making a great car purchase! I love mine too. I have the Prem & Tech package & upgraded the wheels to the 2012-2013 19" wheels. I added a carbon fiber hood mask that makes my Slate Gray Max look wicked. It really is a lot of fun and I get lots of compliments on it. It looks sick, yet still classy. The Nissan Maxima really is a quiet sleeper car that's got the balls to compete.

How many miles? Mine has 45,000 from when we got it new in 05 and some rotten smell has just come up that others say they smell too. Also, our grill is completly sunburned and chipping like crazy, and we will need to replace the top strips for the second time because they are completly yellow agian. BUT, other than those which will hopefully be fixed soon it is a WONDERFUL car and was great for the money. The engine snorttiness is great.

@nismotech I mean, i wish it had a manual but the cvt works really well. When in manual mode, it actually truly does replicate a regular auto and it shifts through the gears(well ratios) really quick. Works great. I can now understand why they use them. Proud owner of a roque.

@97I30T That is the only reason that I don't already own one. I currently have an older generation Maxima with the manual, and I won't have it any other way. This car is so beautiful to me and I want it so badly, but I absolutely cannot forgive the lack of a proper gearbox. Automatics just don't give me that sense of fun that the manuals do.

@kdu8004 I'm no technical guru, but seems like Infiniti(also Nissan) offers a pretty standard 7 speed automatic that involves the use of a torque converter. Now, I would say Infiniti are pretty performance oriented vehicles, wouldn't you agree? Why have they not adopted CVT in the Infiniti line? Do you kind of see my perspective on this? My opinion is perhaps a 6 speed automatic (pretty standard stuff for 2011) would be a better choice for transmission from a enthusiast perspective.

What he actually means is that the Maxima's transmission (a CVT) is great in Manual mode. I entirely agree, but also think that the Maxima's DS mode is great. Torque is always available! For a comparison between the Manual mode and DS mode, see my video of the Maxima. Acceleration times to 60 mph are close to each other.

@neoconsnightmare312 жыл бұрын
they don't need to put a 7 speed auto in it for increased sales, because the maxima has perennially been a sales leader or close to it in its class. if it ain't broke don't fix it. if you want a more aggressive sound from the transmission (and most folks who buy four door family cars don't) replace the air intake with a short ram intake. costs about $300, adds a few horsepower, you gain on mileage and the cars sounds a lot more aggressive.

@kdu8004 CVT does have "economic" advantage over traditional automatic, but in the "performance" category is it a better choice than a say a 6 speed automatic with lockup torque converter? (In 2011 terms). Your right, Manuals are fun, but automatics has came a long way. Look at IS-F (automatic), New 2012 V6 Camry SE (automatic), Mercedes AMG (Automatic, newer ones has MCT), My point is CVT is good for economic models and something like DSG is reserve for your luxury crowd (Such as Infiniti)

I'd totally take the Maxima over the G37 sedan, but I'd go with the G37 coupe over ANYTHING!! I MUCH prefer the Sport packages' rims, but I'd really rather take the Premium package. Black exterior on tan interior for me! Another thing that amazes me, is how quiet and sporty it is at the same time! Nissan hit the bulls eye and more on it. It look like nothing else on the road :D !

so question for 33K which 1 should i get the nissan maxima the G35 or the new aude A4? which 1 is better?
@kdu800413 жыл бұрын
@nismotech The difference is that all the gears can be locked up unlike a conventional auto and this is not from the converter either. IT's from locking the clutch packs which allows you to have a more direct feel, almost like a DSG. Expensive to build, but than again these are luxury automakers not the mainstream. Using s CVT will limit them to how much power they can put on it. For front wheel drive "MAINSTREAM," It works well. So i wouldn't call the IS-F and G37 "conventional."
@kdu800413 жыл бұрын
@nismotech The only problem with CVT like you said is high torque applications. It won't work. But a small v6, the cvt is a perfect fit. If it wasn't good, nissan wouldn't use it in almost all they're sedans. Dsg, you can find in many cars today, not just luxury. Volkswagen for example offers the fastest shifting DSG in the GTI. There is nothing faster than a DSG. But from a enthusiast standpoint, there is nothing better than rowing your own gears. But for the mainstream, CVT makes more sense.
@altimax909111 жыл бұрын
same way bro...always get compliments...i got the sport edition..19 inch rims ..silver and black leather .only premium gas and ester oil :-)
@kdu800413 жыл бұрын
@nismotech Well, I wouldn't call the auto in the IS-f and g37 "conventional." They are pretty complex transmissions. Compare though, the CVT to nissan's old 5 speed auto or The camry's 6 speed auto. Having driven both cars, the maxima shift faster and accelerates smoother and hold the torque much better than the camry's auto. It also give you quicker access to power where as the Camry likes to search for gears. In manual mode, the shifts are precise and very quick.

nice review, granted i'm several years behind, but I now own a 2009 Maxima, and its a nice car, granted its not the greatest sports sedan out there, but its definitely a lot of car for the price. Yes CVT can get boring sometimes, but it gets great MPG, 23 is what I average, mostly city driving. When I get bored I go to sports mode/shifting with shifter, just not into the paddle shifters for some reason, to each their own
@guikegriot15 жыл бұрын

@kdu8004 I guess CVT is a pretty good choice for your majority consumers with it's advantage in fuel economy. If you look back in the 90's Maxima were selling like hotcakes because it's performance advantage over your typical Camry, Accord, etc... It was advertised as a Sport Sedan(It really was!) plus it was fun to drive! Both manual AND automatic offered. Maybe it's just me, but I still don't see "CVT" and "performance" (or "FUN") in the same sentence yet, let alone "Sport Sedan"~

@nismotech Yeah you're absolutely right. But then again, the Maxima is not a g37and is still a mainstream flag ship sedan like a avalon or taurus so they can only make it so sporty but compared to your typical mainstreams like the avalon and Taurus, the maxima is still much, much sportier. I would much rather have the CVT then a conventional automatic. Maybe the next maxima, since manual is out of the question, they'll throw in a DSG gearbox. :)

It's only safer to people who don't bother to learn the basics of weight transfer and how a car reacts to your inputs. Which, unfortunately, describes most Americans. You are right about FWD being better in adverse weather though... particularly snow. Trying to start on a snowy hill in a RWD car is sketchy :)

I would have to disagree with that. No one will cross shop between a Lexus ES, an Avalon, and a Maxima. The first two are sedate and sophisticated cruising cars, while the Maxima has more pronounced styling and is geared toward the more sporty buyer, and one who does not what to "cruise" in the most sensible choice.

i've got a 2011 maxima, and i don't experience any 'drone' (but then, that's subjective). the car sells well, so most folks that buy the maxima are satisfied with the sound. maybe nissan is making maxima languish, but they went about it wrong since it sells like hotcakes. where did they go right? i'm not a fan of the styling of the altima, but again, it's what folks want. cars are beginning to look alike, that's why i like the maxima...it looks 'different' (at least to me).

how is the transmission 'horrible'? most folks that own one LOVE it. 90% plus of cars sold in the united states are automatic because that's what most folks want. why bother putting manual in a car when it won't sell. 'four door sports car' is a tagline...like bmw's 'ultimate driving machine', which it ain't. if YOU don't like the car, then don't buy it. others like (dare i say 'love' in some cases) and they buy it...they APPRECIATE it. different strokes for different folks, man.
