One interesting fun fact that might tickle you, Marco Hietala from Nightwish produced some of their albums (around the Skyforger era) and helped refine Tomi Jotusen's clean vocals for those albums and live performances

They also regularly tour with Amorphis. I think the europe leg next year will be with Amorphis and Turmion Kätilöt. They toured...I think it was 2013..with Amorphis and Arch Enemy as support, which was probably a bit too heavy for the regular Nightwish audience when I remember the reactions ^^ And Marco also helped producing some Delain albums as well, which is a great band by the way ;)

@@brothernemiel6465 Dunno about it being too heavy for the Nightwish crowd. I was at one of the concerts (in Luxembourg, it was 2015 btw) and the fans had a blast with all three bands. Only problem was, that I had taken my then 9-year-old daughter with me and while she loved Amorphis (and of course, Nightwish), I could have prepared her better for Arch Enemy, so it ended with us leaving the main concert hall during that gig and only returning to it, when Nightwish started. I'm not sure if next year, we're already at a state where live concerts are a thing again, but I'd love to repeat that experience with my daughter (and she has already seen Turmion Katilöt opening for Beast in Black, so this time, everything should be fine :D)

Tomi is legendary. I was once informed that Tomi is sometimes referred to by friends as "multakurkku" (mud throat), which is a word play on kultakurkku (gold throat, refers to a beautiful singing voice). Because his growling sound is straight from the gutter 😂 Glad to see you appreciate this band. It gets so easily overlooked despite being ridiculously talented.

I confess that I've never been a fan of harsh vocals, since my taste has always leaned toward power/symphonic/classic metal. But lately I've been slowly warming up to stuff like Arch Enemy, Immortal, and Dimmu Borgir. This is my first time listening to Amorphis, and it definitely sounds like something I could listen to every now and then!
@Garbox80
@Garbox80 3 жыл бұрын
I wasn't a fan of growls also, but I've liked Amorphis since the mid 90's. Those clean vocals balance it out so nicely. And now of course Floor's growling bits and Jinjer are on my radar, but Arch Enemy (at least what I've heard from them) is still a bit too much. Music wise great, but all growls makes it too heavy to listen to regularily. One BIG plus in Tomi's growls is that I can easily understand most of what he's singing.
@Eluarelon
@Eluarelon 3 жыл бұрын
I was the same, though I stopped listening to metal around the time Grunge became a thing ( I basically stopped listening to music completely, so it's not Kurt Cobain's fault^^). Didn't return to it until 2013 I think, and the first two albums that I listened to were Stone Sour's House of Gold and Bones part 1 and Amorphis' Circle. Both albums completely changed my mind and in the meantime, I can't even explain to myself that there was that time when I couldn't even listen to thrash metal because even Metallica's Master of Puppets sounded like Noise to my ears. today I love harsh vocals though my preference is when you have them mixed with clean vocals because of the dynamics that creates. Which probably explains why Tomi Joutsen and Mikael Stanne are my favorite singers as of right now.
@Xydroos
@Xydroos 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe try Wintersun "Sons of winter and stars" and "Time", both have quite "clean" harsh vocals where it's easier hear wording behind it. When you have listened more harsh vocals you ears start to pick up more words and it gets easier to "listen" lyrics. Well both song are good without lyrics, so if can't understand everything they work as instruments also. PS with lyrics i mean singing where you can understand wording.

Amorphis, allways morphing, one of the greatest bands from Finland ever alongside with Nightwish, Children Of Bodom, Silentium,etc. There was time before these great marketting successes with these great bands that that were equally good from Finland but lack of marketting effort at the day in were never heard internationally. Great bands like Sentensed or Kingston Wall were victims of the times. BUT. There is also one active really great band from Finland that no one is noticing internationally in reactions or othervise and I just can´t figure out why. The band Diablo has been around since 1995 and I really think they have earned a honest reaction from someone, especially with your track record with Finnish bands... Diablo - Preacher, or yet to come albums first single Grace under pressure would be good choises. And man, I really love your style. Honest true reactions without a drop of added honey, just the way it should be.

When we make live videos with my band we record both the room sound and everything straight from the mixer to get some of that rougher live feel to the mix. We're such a small band that crowd audio isn't really a thing :D Small clubs of about 100 people and not really "singalong music" :D

Growing up in the 70s and listening to the classic rock bands back then, I've got to say Amorphis are one of the best bands I've heard in the past 20 years. First heard Eclipse back in 2006 and some of the most catchiest, melodic metal I'd ever heard. Some would probably say that was a departure from the 90s material but they've kept the quality up over the years.

Those vocals always go to my soul and touch something deep in there, both the clean and the growls. Thank you for getting back to Amorphis! "Forging a Land of Thousand Lakes" DVD (Oulu) has nice audio. I especially recommend Silver Bride and Majestic Beast.

The Bee is one of my favorite Amorphis songs. Who in their right mind would have ever thought that a song about a bee could be that amazing? I saw them live in January 2019 in Munich. Although I have to say that their co-headliner for that tour, Soilwork, delivered a better show. You should definitely check out their live recording for "Stålfågel", if you haven't already.

Greetings from Finland & thanks for your reaction / analysis of yet another great Finnish metal band with their great male vocalist Tomi Joutsen (last name translates as "Swan" in English).

I seen these guys play live on Oct. 5, 2019 with Delain and Anneke van Giersbergen. I even participated with the meet and greet with everyone. This was at Venue in Vancouver, BC. These guys were a great group to talk to, and not many people were rushing them. So I got to talk to each person. That was awesome. Also, on that NA Tour, until that day, Delain’s drummer Joey had been missing because he didn’t have his paperwork done properly to enter Canada. So Jan from Amorphis was filling in for Delains’ set. That very night, 3/4 through the concert, Joey made it!!!! Charlotte Wessels (Delain) told us Joey’s story of a week of HELL of staying at hostel’s, airports, taking multiple flights, fighting his way to catch up with the tour, and everyone got the news mid show that he was there! He walked out, and the crowd went insane! Anyways, it was a good show, and the last one I went to before everything has shut down.

I really think Stam1na would be right up your alley. Their song kannoin sinut läpi hiljaisen huoneen is something else! And don't bother with Google translate when translating Finnish 😅 If you're getting in to it I for example can help you with the lyric translation.

Tomi is such a great vocalist, one of my pref. He can go from smooth clean vocal to awesome growl. When I started listening to Amorphis, I thought there were two different singers...no, it's just Tomi!

I seriously hope these guys get even bigger. I love the personal, intimate bar shows. But god damn. They deserve a big stage like this, and a massive audience, because i'm not kidding when I say I have seen them 4 separate times and they are one of my favourite live performances. There's a certain beauty in their musicality, and the way they do things. Their writer is clearly ridiculously talented. Tomi's voice is so ridiculous, those deep as hell growls, and amazing soaring clean vocals. It would not be the same without both vocal types. Kultti, buddy. You killed it. Tank, this was a great reaction, and i'm looking forward to your next one. Black Winter Day is a fantastic recommendation, it is a HEAVY song from their old days.

@Tank The Wacken Open Air is usually on the first Weekend of August, so you probably mean 3rd August, not 3rd October. I went to WOA 2018 and saw Amorphis live, so it’s definitely not October

You are correct. I even knew that, and have no idea what my mind was thinking about when typed October. My Dad’s birthday is October 3rd, so maybe I saw the date as the 3rd and thought of that. Haha

btw, you were right about the throat singing. Those were performed by Albert Kuvezin, lead singer and guitarist for the Russian (Tuvan) folck rock band Yat-Kha. btw. another guest on the Queen of Time album was Anneke van Giersbergen (a major inspiration for vocalists like Floor) on the song "Amongst Stars". Unluckily, all live vids I've seen suffer from bad sound as well, but the studio video is fantastic, and she and Tomi together are absolutely spectacular.
