One of the biggest misconceptions there is about BABYMETAL is that they were put together for a "marketing coup" when in fact it took them years and a lot of hard work in front of super small crowds to get noticed. They grinded their way up, nothing was ever given to them on a plate. It's actually crazy how many people think it was just another Britney Spears phenomenon. No. They worked hard. For years. And they deserve every ounce of success that they got. Let us all remember that they borrowed clothes from their teachers to make up their costumes for their first MV.

Ever thought about the fact that it is a combination of both? The Idol culture in Japan is hard work "for all Idols", you work for a marketing machine "essentially selling your soul". Yes you are right, if you try to say we cannot compare it to the western marketing machine where we take someone with the IQ of a tree that represents a certain group, give him lyrics about pretending to be rich, give him a golden chain and rented cars to sell louis vuitton while using autotune. The Japanese represent hard work and talent. But still, Japanese Idols are drilled into strict choreography programs full of dancing, acting, insane work hours. The fan meetings, clothing, the brand is all chosen by the company. You as an Idol are the product and they will perfect you and cultivate you until you drop dead or the contract expires..
@NegoClau8 ай бұрын
Technically, they were assembled by a marketing team, from a group of funny talented girls in an industry that works similarly to Disney Channel or Old School Nickelodeon. But they were put in this machine and just went on as it went on. They did grind their way up, and that took guts from everyone involved. And they're still going strong as an unity, the girls and the band. Also: in Japan this project is already generating spinoffs. And world wide they're getting accepted by the real big boys on metal. I just wish the pop music world would get in touch with them.

They were literally like 10 when they went into this, did you expect them to be playing heavy metal instruments and dancing and singing all at once at 10 years old? Metal bands don't even dance because they are playing instruments. Babymetal's entire concept is mashing J-Pop vocals with a metal band. They aren't "manufactured" because no one ever said they played the instruments themselves nor does it matter. Most idols NEVER play instruments because their focus is on singing and dancing which is what this is.

The thing about BabyMetal's "gimmickry" is that they've never pretended to be anything other than what they are: a cool mashup of Idol and Metal. And they do it well. The songwriters take care to write good songs with hooks that require actual talent to perform. The girls put on an *amazing* show, with their nonstop dancing and energy. Seeing them live on their US tour in 2018 was fantastic, even without the huge productions they have access to in Japan. Just absolute fun. And I completely agree about lots of other bands having gimmicks. The first that always comes to mind is KISS. Along with Alice Cooper, they are the granddaddies of using shock value to get your attention. Angus Young with his schoolboy outfit. Judas Priest in leather. And all the others you mentioned. Either gimmicks matter or they don't. If they don't matter for the others, they shouldn't matter for BabyMetal, either. As you said, gimmicks are worthless if the band can't hold your attention. BabyMetal have shown that they are more than just a gimmick. They might never be my favorite band in the world, but I love 'em nonetheless, because they make me happy. :-) Cheers to you for giving them another chance.

Looking into the history of the group, it's not unfair to say that the band started as a gimmick. I think the problem is the stigma that comes with the word "gimmick" in the first place. It shouldn't matter as long as it sounds good.
@prophetisaiah083 жыл бұрын
@@carlosandleon I agree, and I don't use the term "gimmick" in a derogatory sense. Metal music is full of gimmicks; bands frequently do things to grab attention and set themselves apart from others. We've had everything from Ozzy's early on-stage antics, to Iron Maiden's Eddie, to Slipknot's masks, to Sabaton's focus on military history. There's nothing inherently wrong with gimmicks, and I'd even say that most of the best and most popular metal acts DO have a gimmick of some sort. The problem comes when an artist has nothing *beyond* the gimmick.

Which (at least for me) made the flow really interesting. And adding some native Thai instruments sounded cool. The lyrics in the rap section mention Som Tam (spicy Thai papaya salad). This one was filmed at Yokohama Arena on the second of two nights, so everyone knew to bring a towel to wave, or to get one from the merch stand before the show started. Excellent reaction and good job with your 'Tank Facts' too. I may be the exception, but I never saw BABYMETAL as a gimmick. I stumbled across them by chance about 4 years ago and what I saw immediately was a really tight band fronted by an incredibly talented lead vocalist supported by a couple of backing vocalists who were also dancing and creating a whole load of energy. What I heard was really good music played exceptionally well - and it made me happy. I've never seen the point of dancing other than to fill a stage and give you something to look at to take your mind of bland or poor music, but this was not what I saw with BABYMETAL. They were using the choreo to help with interpreting the songs, but more importantly they were leading the audience, interacting with the crowd and getting everybody involved. I don't think anybody has told you this yet. Their name 'BABYMETAL' is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons: - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal) - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun): BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru) heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru) You already have some excellent suggestions for more songs to react to, so I won't add more just yet. I think you will be surprised (in the best sense) by every song they do - you will be very hard pressed to find any two that are the same although some may appeal more, some less depending on your own preferences of course.

That was great! I've been waiting for you to do BABYMETAL for a while now and I'm super happy that you ended up liking them! I think many people dismiss them for being a producer's brainchild and many people have this misconception that they started at the top. But they still had to work their way up like organic bands. They began performing in warehouses and at the smallest stages in festivals, where they were semi-regularly jeered at. (Imagine being jeered at at the tender ages of your pre-teen years! These girls' perseverance are real, I tell you). They have big corporate backing now, sure, but they also had to earn this. They were given a minimal budget at the start, and even had to borrow clothes for their first music video. Anyway, I don't think there's any difference if the music is good and the people are passionate about it. I always looked at BM as more of this producer's passion project than some soulless corporate money-making gimmick that some people accuse them of. They have been around for 10 years (and have 20+ awards!) and still going strong, even after the tragedies of 2018 where Yuimetal left and a guitarist died. So yes, BABYMETAL is legit as can be. I really hope you see Road of Resistance Live in Japan next (kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIWoioh8nLGpm7s) next. Showcases the band more, and definitely one of their most metal songs. Dragonforce collaborated with them for this song, and it's such an epic, goosebump-inducing performance. Thank you so much again for giving them a chance! Fun is the exact word. I've noticed metal heads that can just smile and have fun love baby metal. The metal heads that take their metal super serious hate it.
@TankTheTech4 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is, I never considered myself a metal head that took it super serious, because I love a lot of other goofy and fun metal bands. But then I realized the reason I've been dismissing BabyMetal is because I was taking it too serious. Oh well, at least I've figured it out now. Haha
@LSLS55554 жыл бұрын
@@TankTheTech oh I'm not saying you are/were. Just more of a generalization I've noticed in the guys I know who love/hate them. Not that taking the music serious is bad either, just how different people react to it. I get the feeling that when I was younger I would have hated baby metal, but now that I'm a little older, I can roll with it much more. Anyways, loving the videos, keep it up. You bring a killer perspective i don't see on KZbin.

Come for the spectacle and stay for the music. I think when they came out a lot of people thought they would be around a season or two, make a quick buck and be onto some other scheme. But that's never what they were about. They're good because they have a great joy in performing, and are having the time of their lives and they want everyone to join in. And its infectious. But they are smart, ambitious, and talented. And no one workls harder - I couldn't bounce around like that for a song and they do it all concert, with enough breath to sing. They put in a lot of work behind the scenes. The 2 days to release the video - this was recorded on Friday in Yokohama like you said, and they played Yokohama again on Saturday night, then flew and played Glastonbury Sunday afternoon in the UK. The BBC released a video of their PA PA YA performance there, and I think they wanted to get this out first so the BBC one was not the defacto video. that's my take. Just a note, Fukking Hero is a Thai rapper, and in Thai "fuk" means gourd. I worked with a woman named Fuk. So they have a completely different spin on the name.
@autohmae4 жыл бұрын
And very important: the music really is made with respect and love for metal and the craft. Thanks for the Fukking Hero part, I've heard some things, but I never really understood it properly. When it came out, it was actually both videos in the top 10 video on KZbin in Japan for a day ? (in Japan KZbin might not yet be the biggest video platform, it might be Nico Nico ?)

Just a quick side note, Su-metal is the primary vocalist, Yui-metal and Moa-metal were/are backing vocals and dancers, so most of the singing you'll hear from them is Su-metal (real name Suzuka Nakamoto). But yeah I've honestly gotten very into this band, insanely talented all around, and while I'm sure the Kawaii metal gimmick has brought them a lot of attention, fans like me have stuck around mostly for the music I think. But I'm gonna parrot other people here and request Road of Resistance (live), Megitsune, Karate, or Rondo of Nightmare. But honestly this band is so musically diverse I think you could pick anything and be fine haha. Anyway, great video, you got my sub for sure
@arizona_anime_fan4 жыл бұрын
check out Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischief of God intro, and almost all of Babymetal's best videos are live, their studio recordings are a bit too processed. If you want the band front and center, that one is a great watch. finally, these girls have been doing this since they were like 14... Su, the lead singer was dominating stages as a budding queen of metal since she was too young to drive. Check out Road to Resistance (dragonforce helped write it) the live version (which is everywhere) is from a concert when she was just 16. sorta insane when you think about it. Finally headbangeeeer! is a must see (I suggest a live version though the music video is fun too)
@edamameme17894 жыл бұрын
They're a tradtional "Idol" group, hence the girls being the focus. That said, I attended the Chiba concert this January (pre covid) and it was Saturday + Sunday nights, 50000 people sold out both days. Totally different music sets on each night, no song repeated, and the Saturday was "Sun" themed with their more happy songs and Sunday was "Moon" with their more dark sounding stuff. I think i lost 4-5 kgs of body weight due to their crowds. They sell out their towels immediately and you need a bottle of water or you will die. The entire floor was a constant (but more gentle) mosh pit. Attending one of their big concerts is like attending an experimental metal theater show. Its not a traditional band up there by any means and the production value is nuts. That said, I still love me my Band-Maid.

It might seem like a lot of people, but Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, from their website: "This multi-purpose hall has a capacity of 9,000 people" Babymetal has performed at Tokyo Dome, similar situation but then they did have those 50 000 people and sold out, also 2 days and 2 setlists.

BM definitely are not a "traditional idol group", since they left the Sakura Gakuin realm a long time ago. Btw I envy you that you were able to see them live in those gigs. :-)
@edamameme17894 жыл бұрын
autohmae you looked at the Makuhari Messe “ Event Hall”. Thats a tiny stage. Thats too small for a local Japan Baby Metal concert, at their current popularity level. Check out their website and you’ll see they have 4-5 venues, and with over 10+ “halls”. Baby Metal filled 3 halls at 25000 people per night. (So it was 50k total, not each night, my bad) I wish it were only 9000. Would’ve been a lot closer to the stage.
@rorschach77594 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't think it is a gimmick so much as it is combining the kind of corporate philosophy of idol groups. Pretty much everything I've seen with Korean or Japanese media the production value and talent is off the charts, but it rarely organically comes from a bunch of friends who got together and jammed in a garage. It comes from a company generating a product. Which is perfectly fine to me because they're putting genuinely talented people together and doing a really good job of considering every production detail the way Marvel does with their universe, or a fancy car company does with their cars. It's so well thought out that it feels special. It's like if Dragon Force had a team of song writers to come up with a theme for their songs instead of just running solos for 3 minutes plus coordinated outfits and dance moves which is typical of this style of media presentation. I think the gimmick if anything is finally capitalizing on the idea of young talent that youtube has been profiting off of for like 20 years.
@BadEnd982 жыл бұрын
@@rorschach7759 totally agree, but more to that at Babymetal success in blending the genres, it's their producer, is really not an idol producer, he's a former metal band manager and he know how to appreciate the metal music. Also the girls were so well protected (the older they are, the longer the dress and less skin shown lol, and we completely know NOTHING about their personal life) and didn't get forced to do something they don't like (even contribute in some songs if they have good idea - "song 4" for example was written by Yui&Moa, and most of their songs have base vocal line over the music created by Su on her own then they proceed to write lyrics) so on stage you see their honest enthusiasm and passion - which pump up the crowd - what normal idol groups don't have (especially K-pop, I know a lot of big k pop groups were forced to wear those very very uncomfortable clothes in their "live" show and those songs that singer herself hate because it's stupid 1 word 2 lines over and over)

I felt the same way about this group for years but the more you listen, the more you notice the details. Like, they have done this for a decade. If they were a gimmick in the beginning, they aren't going to be a gimmick if they are magnitudes more popular years later. Or that all the big metal bands you can name absolutely love them and champion them and you can find pictures of them with everyone from Metallica to Marilyn Manson to Rob Zombie to Judas Priest (Rob Halford actually performed with them) to Rammstein to BMTH and even more. Or even that they turned a crowd of 60,000 British metalheads who they expected to hate them and throw beer bottles at them into fans chanting "One more song!". Or that they are backed by literally some of the best musicians in the world who respect these girls so much and have said that they'd only ever tour for them and nobody else. So I'm a massive fan now, its all there and I enjoy the hell out of them. Good reaction dude, I subbed. I would suggest Road of Resistance (Live in Japan) next if you wanna see more of the band. Welcome to The One brother!

Not their most Metal song but a good example of the eclectic mix of genres and styles this band are capable of putting out - no two songs are ever the same for Babymetal! Great reaction and very open-minded and fair so hats off to you, man, especially as you say you were having to fight against years of thinking they were just a gimmick (unlike, say, Slipknot's masks, Sabbath's Black Mass themes, Kiss's make-up, Rammstein's use of power tools, etc?). Rob Zombie had the best answers for those who can't approach them as you just did - ie, those that have myopic vision and very narrow parameters of what fits their idea of what is Metal and what isn't. He'd given them kudos for being so good live and his best answers to disgruntled fans were "They roll harder than you" and "They have more energy than 90% of the bands we play with". As someone who's first Metal gig was Sabbath in 1976 and whose favourute Rock gig had been Zeppelin in 79 - yeah, I'm a fucking Boomer - I'd felt I'd seen every possible permutation of Metal and Rock by the mid 90's and threw myself into EDM. Slipknot and Rammstein popped up about then and reignited my interest in Metal for another decade but it was Babymetal who finally got my full attention back on Metal in 2016. I usually direct people who have any doubts about their Metal credentials to their Legend 97 version of their song 'Death' ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIPGapeYnM51hqs ), which is as Metal a performance as anything I've seen Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Sabbath, Rammstein or Metallica do live. The performance gives big nods to Metallica, who were the band that got them their first UK Metal fest appearance, and that's usually my second recommendation, their finale from that show, in front of 65,000 Metal heads waiting to see Maiden headline, IDZ, the best Metal song ever about stopping bullying ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKCQkJaYm8mlj6c ). They sell out 55,000 seater arenas for 2 nights running, sold out their USA and European tours in 2019 and 2020 and were due to be supporting Iron Maiden on their tour this year until covid struck. They have, most importantly, evolved over the years, always changing, always mixing up different Metal genres in their own unique way (as here, in Pa-pa-ya, the most Metal song ever about tropical fruit and spicy hot Thai salads). The Kami Band are rightly named The God Band and I'd have to recommend reacting to some of their superb solos and intros to songs to see their skills. I saw them in Feb in the same city, Cardiff, Wales, UK, 45 years after I saw Sabbath in the same city and would have to say they are the most original and refreshing Metal band I've seen in that time. In the Rock universe, the same would have to go to Band-Maid, who are playing solid, in-yer-fucking-face Rock/ Heavy Rock as skilfully and with as much joy, passion and band camaraderie as the likes of the Rolling Stones, or Zeppelin ever possessed. Look forward to seeing you explore more of their large back catalogue! And more Band-Maid reactions will no doubt be coming soon, based on your obvious appreciative reactions to them! PS When you started smiling, I knew you'd got it! No other Metal band ever makes me headbang, smile widely or even cry and Babymetal can do all three in one song! I'm a Boomer and haven't got a clue what or who a sean paul is!
