Eluvetie, ensiferum, turisas, koorpiklani, moonsorrow, Tyr and Finntroll I bought a shirt from their slania album and lately saw that they released slania 10 years anniversary. They took the same cover and made the girl adult, she was a child on the original cover. That was a really cool move, I still have that shirt even though it's a bit short around the belly :D

This 'at home' feeling ur describing is actually, what Eluveitie try to accomplish with their music. The singer duo once said in an interview that they try to invoke the feeling of home and being happy about it with their sound. For them its obviously the great mountains and mystical folklore in switzerland, but I feel like it could trigger for anyone. I am swiss myself, so I get exactly what they were going for. Cool to hear someone express the same feelings, especially when theyre not native :)

The tank facts are so brilliant =) i didnt know half of what you brought up that is amazing =) "i feel like im at home" i understand you fully, folk metal can do that. But i cant keep it in: you ARE at home atm XD Heilung may get your tribal heart. If you like Folk Metal you might wanna give a shot at In Extremo - Liam, Schandmaul - Sturmnacht, or for just Folk Faun has some good ones too like "Andro" (its a rather old one bit a gold one ^^) And ofc Wardruna has some very good ones too (Bjarkan is a favorite of mine^^ the one sung in a viking ship museum) Wardruna and Heilung also both make music for the vikings TV show and Heilung also made the soundtrack for a video game (Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice) Finally for a more metal heavy folk you should try "Equilibrium - Rise again" that could be for your headbanging needs. That said im not a fan of the vocalist growling i oftne feel like hes ruining the songs by opening his mouth but if you are into deep death metally growls hes your guy^^ Anyway "Rise Again" will make you headbang to a flute. that story alone is worth it XD In the official version they also use gopros to film themselves from their instruments view. bit scary with the singer but gives you a good look at their gear

Isn't the thing about folk music that feeling that somehow you know it? Not in the sense that you heard that song on the radio sometime, but that it's a thing that's been living inside you forever, deep in your soul or your dna and somehow the best bands produce an audible expression of some instinct within you that was there in your ancestors eons ago and brings it into your consciousness. And then you add the energy of metal and it's off the scale.

@shuriken48524 жыл бұрын
I had the same king of experience recently with symphonic metal. Here is my take away on why this appeals so much to me. I was introduced to hard rock by a friend at the beginning of the 80s with AC/DC, then in the mid-80s my cousin introduced me to Metallica and I was a metalhead for life, but as Metal went down the heavier and less melodic route starting with Slayer, then Death & Black Metal, I could not follow, so I stayed with my classic metal up to the Trash era. But recently I got introduced to Nightwish and everything clicked, this was the evolution of the complex compositions, time signatures & key changes, the Metallica of S&M, but with the orchestrations builtin and interwoven with the Metal sound from inception, so everything I like about Metallica, but just taken to the next level. So basically to me Symphonic Metal takes the aggression I love from Metal and makes a perfect marriage with the melodic charm of a full symphonic orchestra & choir, the best of both worlds.

OK Tank, I am NOT a hurdy-gurdy player, but I can give you a quick rundown. I'm doing this with the English names of the instrument parts, not the French names, which are often used....it varies. The gurdy is a stringed instrument, tho the strings that play the melody lines are hidden IN the keybox... along the 'far side (away from the player) there are a number of keys that, when depressed, will play melody notes. These keys cause the movement of pinch-points called 'tangents;' which act as fingers to 'fret' the strings. Note that the keys on the players LEFT are wider than those on the right... just like fret placement going up a guitar neck. The strings can either be "BOWED' by the wheel, or can be left to drone on their own. There are a couple strings outside the keybox that are held up on little pegs... when dropped of the peg, they get bowed by the wheel as the player turns it, but they do not change in pitch with the keybox... you can think of them like the drone pipes on highland or uillean pipes. There may be another string or two on the near-to-the-player side of the wheel that typically ride on a buzzing-bridge... kinda/sorta/a bit like a sitar's buzzing bridge... again, this string can be moved away from the wheel to stop it from being bowed. Obviously, the crank turns the wheel which bows the a strings... it can be run legato or staccato, depending on whether the crack is turned continuously in one direction, or 'rattled' back and forth (that's demo'd in this song in the breakdown) I looked into building one because, hell, I used to be an engineer, and I've made a few of my own instruments (e.g. 6-string lap steel 3 singlecoils and a 5-way superswitch that give BrianMay-like combinations... and I'm making an 8 string now with Sentient and Pegasus pickups in it...Metal Lap Steel CHUGS!!!).... but alas I think I'm going to wait until I win the lottery and buy a real one from a true craftsman/luthier. Anyway, take a look at the wiki page for hurdy gurdy... it has more words, which are equally as confusing as mine. If I ever win that Lottery, I'll have one made for you with "Violent Gurdymen" inlaid in wrought iron on the keybox.

For some more Polynesian metal check out Sheperds Reign. On another front check out Asterism - Rising Moon, and Ningen Isu - Heartless Scat, or Poisounous Mountain (the u in Isu is silent) Edit: Don't know where my head was at the title is Hells Mountain of Poisounous Needles.

Just saw them live with Dark Tranquillity and Amorphis. It was amazing and I had to come back to this as Rebirth is stuck in my head ever since.

Hell yeah. Family comes from Switzerland. So I like it already. But that was a fun listen. Definitely going to listen to more. I really enjoy when a band uses classical instruments or regional instruments. It really adds that special flair that can't be had from just regular rock gear.

Totally agree. Folk Metal is so good at incorporate such awesome traditional instruments into the music to give it it's own unique sound.

Another great song from this album is Deathwalker. As others have suggested, King is also definetely worth a listen. Your words about folk metal in this video and in the video for The Islander make me feel like seeing you react to Helvegen by Wardruna with Aurora. There's an amazing live version on YT ;)

If you want more flutes listen to Bloodywood ;) Eluveitie is so amazing, you alrdy mentioned King and Call of the mountain. But a good fit from another band would be the band "In This Moment" with the track "Big Bad Wolf", have fun :)

You are so right! I feel at home too with folk metal. You gotta check TEGERNAKO from elu! Plus look for a video about Chrigel explaining the album HELVETIOS ( ancient word for Swiss, even in Italian we call them ELVETICI). You could hear him talking for one hour about how the album it's not simply a music composition but it's also the historical reconstruction of the facts narrated in the DE BELLO GALLICO, which narrated Propaganda-Style the Roman emperor and his conquest. What makes Elu great I think it's the fact that they (mostly Chrigel) stand for what they sing/play. As they truly believe and honour their forefathers. And that passion makes the band sound great and real! And not just fake and plastic just so much shit that unfortunately had become pretty famous lately. I have seen them at least 4 or 5 times live. Awesome shows. I love them when they do acoustic ( songs like ISARA, for example) As Italian myself I love the fact that Matteo Sisti joined the band. He used to play for the Italian band KRAMPUS . You should check them out too ;) . Keep up the folk !

I've only recently discovered this band as well and I'm loving what I've heard so far. You really should give Wagakki Band a try, not really metal but have a similar concept of adding classic instrumentation into a modern rock setting, Homura+Akutsuki no Ito Live first Japanese tour 2015 is the absolute best place to start.
