The individual in the blue Ford doesn’t articulate it particularly well but he has a point. A rote and binary reading of the Highway Code would indeed suggest there’s no compulsion to use a cycle lane. However this really shouldn’t result in replacing reasonable and objective risk based decision making, with acting upon a perceived entitlement to occupy a piece of road. If a cycle lane has been provided this is for the safety of all road users and to ensure all road users are able to make reasonable progress. Failing to use a cycle lane without good reason (for example it being unserviceable for some reason) is a failure of rational decision making and is likely to result in increase risk and possibly delay for all.
@CyclingMikey9 ай бұрын
No, you're wrong and he's wrong and neither of you have a point.

There's many reasons a rider would need to use a full size lane, and we're completely allowed to do so. What's illegal is to threaten or to hit a rider because their presence annoys you.
@daveJohnson-fo5vm9 ай бұрын
@@KimeeZM Absolutely, I certainly wasn’t intending to condone any actions of violence or aggression towards anyone. I agree that there may well be good reason to justify departure from a cycle lane (and I say as much above). However if there exists good reason for anything greater than a minority of instances then that would, in my mind at least, necessarily call into question whether the cycling infrastructure we’ve built is fit for purpose and hence what needs to change to make it so.
@KimeeZM9 ай бұрын
@@daveJohnson-fo5vm certainly there should be a tendency towards using bike lanes where available, and most of the riders in Mikey's videos do use the lanes, even Mikey himself uses them, but there's lots of reasons that riders have to take a fullsize lane or mix with cars (roads that just don't have bike lanes, riders that need to make a turn, cars parked in the bike lane, bike trailer doesnt fit in bikelane, and yes, artistic choices of a filmmaker). The point is that drivers aren't allowed to force riders off the road when we decide to use it. The blue driver was shouting at Mikey while sitting in a weapon, most reasonable people would consider that a threat. The blue driver might not have been egregeously threatening, but it's still not okay. On a regular basis drivers shout at me and then cut in too close to my path because (presumably) they don't like that I'm riding a bike. If traffic had been moving at the time, I can only imagine that's exactly what the blue driver would've done. Threatening riders might not be regularly punished, but it should be considered a crime.
