I think the criticisms from Johnny saying that Clem couldn't keep up is coming from the fact that Clem plays a little slower than how the Ramones played at that time. I find that this sounds much better than what was on loco live. I can actually hear the song and not be rushed through it and I'll never understand why the Ramones decided going faster every year was a good idea.

@@Scoot12321 I don't think it was for being hardcore and stuff like that, when you pay attention to the early days they literally played eighth notes all the time without skipping a single beat, and it's really tiring to keep up show after show, night after night, year after year. That's why they started going faster each year. It was good for them to save stamina as their shows were based to play 30 songs in a row as well, unfortunately their songs certainly lost its melody and style because of being too fast though.

It's interesting how this clip prompted so much discussion about the Ramones' live tempos in the later years. Clem is definitely playing tempos right off the first album, which the band obviously wasn't used to anymore. Johnny almost sounds like he wants to go faster in places before sinking back into the slower tempo. Joey's vocal timing is all over the place on songs that had become really fast over the last ten years. As a drummer though, I can hear Clem is a TIGHT player as far as technique, but he also plays these songs with the wrong drum parts a lot of the time. Playing the wrong cymbals, crashes in the wrong places, fills are just wherever. He REALLY didn't play the Rock n Roll Radio patterns right. I can see how the group could have improved from here as a whole, but I can also see that it wasn't clicking fast enough, and they had shows to play. With all that said, I do personally prefer these more rhythmic tempos over the messier and faster style of the band's later years, but there are a lot of diehard Ramones fans who love that "Loco Live" sound. The band wanted to prove they were always a real force in the punk scene and not a group of dinosaurs who cap off at 200 bpm, which may not be what everyone cares about, but they earned their fair share of respect (and mosh pits) by doing it. Maybe it's for the best that the Ramones ultimately did a wide range of things with their sound that different fans can enjoy/respect for different reasons. The band seems to have successfully cemented themselves as punk gods and music legends, so they definitely did more than one thing right... more so than a lot of forgotten artists with a radio hit or two.

I wasn't there so I don't know what happened and people say this and that in interviews over the years. I saw a video where Clem said he was asked to join on Tuesday and played the first show on the Friday..... if thats a fact he must have known the songs pretty well already to even consider saying yes. It would probably take a while for a new band member to get comfortable with the on stage sound set up with a new band. I've never had the pleasure of having my own sound crew but to jump into a band and start playing live so quickly....and the Ramones don't exactly have long breaks between songs to noodle around with sound. Top that off with band members that don't speak that is one hell of a situation to jump into.

Listened to 10 mins of this and it doesn't sound as bad as Johnny said it was, and to be honest in the last years of the Ramones' career the tempo was WAY too fast - so much so that it took away from the original power and momentum of the song, and Joey couldn't keep up! Check out 'It's Alive' before they went absurdly fast - it absolutely pisses all over the likes of 'Loco Live', a woeful document of a band murdering their classics..

What did they expect anyway? Clem had to jump in after the sudden leave of Ritchie and with Ritchie in the band, their playing speed was raised with a rough 20% in BPM! Ritchie had a lot to do with this as he was a speed freak on drums. So when one gets thrown into live shit like this without much time to practice.... well, I'ld like to see a lot of experienced drummers taking it home! When I play along on Ramones-records on guitar and it's been a while, my right arm pumps up like I'm doing motorcross from keeping up with them downstrokes. It takes practice! All of you that critisize obviously don't play an instrument yourself.

This is cool to hear. Burke is an excellent drummer, not just with Blondie but w/ Iggy Pop and the Eurythmics. But as people have already pointed out, Ramones music takes a certain stamina, and you are not going to obtain it on short notice. Put it this way, if they had called Neal Peart under the same circumstances, I think we would be having the same discussion. Now if he had had more time to get used to how the songs are played, I think he would have been fine.

Yeah Clem is real good, but not at playing Ramones music. As for their other drummers, only Tommy was simple, skills-wise (he was a non drummer, but a visionary guy). Richie is fairly powerhouse, and in 2014 was the featured instrumentalist on drums for the Pasedena Pops Orchestra for an arrangement he put together of music from Westside Story. As for Mark, check his drumming in Dust, Estus, and Richard Hell & the Voidoids. He knows his way around the skins. He simplified his drumming to suit the Ramones successfully, Clem did not.

Good solid versions which could have been imrpoved greatly if Joey had just stuck to singing the songs like he did on the records.

Elvis was in the band for like a week. Not even long enough to actually be named a Ramone. Elvis Ramone was just an idea he had. He was terrible at the show. The whole band thought so. luckily Marky came back sober just in time.

The best Ramones drummers were #1 Tommy, #2 Ritchie, #3 Marky. Tommy created the classic sound that everyone remembers them by where he had soft touch which Chris Stein in End of the Century says jelled the sound together. Marky basically just bangs it out every song - good on the rockers but monotonous after a while. Ritchie played on 2 of the best later Ramones albums "Too Tough to Die" and "Animal Boy in '86, I saw them in'86 and they were great! They were never the same again - they started playing faster, Joey's voice went out and it was a joke starting in the later 80's where I saw them again and they sucked

I admire Clem Burke (Elvis).. Admittedly this recording ain't great. But Clem's drumming style doesn't work at all, with there 'live' stuff.. Personally I'm a Richie fan... I like the faster stuff.. But each to their own :)

Ciertamente y como bien cuenta la historia, este baterista no sirvió para el estilo “Ramones” ...se quedaba un paso atrás y parecía bajar la velocidad en medio de los temas...

Worst Rock 'N' Roll Radio version ever. Glad Marky came back to save the band if not those two years 1987-88 would have been lost for them trying to find a new drummer
