Very well done. A wealth of knowledge here for anyone who though you have to travel to far far lands, just to fish!. Only please emphasis on having and hanging forest pass or be prepare to pay a hefty ticket, on many locations around the lake, including official parking locations. Then be carful of walking by the side of highway as you are risking your life with no decent hospital in area, unless you get air lifted and pay a 25K transportation charge!

Great videos! Thanks for the public service! Headed up that way for the first time with my son next week. Hoping to catch dinner! Staying at Dogwood campground. Where’s the best place to fish close to there? Is the dam or north shore of big bear better for fishing at the moment? Worth going if we don’t get there early? Thanks so much!!!

@@TroutWest my pleasure, thanks for sharing, back in the 80s my girlfriend and I were fishing the Dam and we witnessed a group of Asians caught a 50 lb plus carp we got a kick outta it cuz the carp was bigger than all of em! Lol, we spent a lot of time heading up to Big Bear, we witnessed the most awesome meteor shower you can imagine while we slept in the woods in the back of my El Camino....200 per minute...you did a great job on the video...we used to rent a boat and catch our limit using a Ford fender trolling trailing a night crawler.... there's HUGE catfish in the late, I found a head nailed to a tree behind 7/11 that weighed 11 lbs!!!! I fished there yesterday and just about everyone fishing on the northshore to the dam got skuned except for one guy that caught a 2 pound rainbow. I did catch a Rapala lure and a Rooster tail when reeling in my line as it got caught on old line. I was able to retrive my line plus the old line so I got skunked but got two lures while fishing. This is a tough lake to fish and the water still looks low as it was last year.

Brandon detrio88 Water warming will bring fish to the surface but further out on the lake from shore or over deeper water. Early in the day would be best near shore

Urban Outdoorsman thanks! Have you ever fished this time of year? I was gonna try my go to Carolina but on my other pole I wanna experiment with a slip bobber at different depths any tips on depth, top or bottom fishing?
@TroutWest6 жыл бұрын
@@Aguyf89 Sorry, I missed this somehow. If the wind isn't blowing, use a slip bobber. Always use a long leader at BBL. 3ft-5ft. Unless you're targeting fish near shore, which is good to do in late winter early spring.

Is it reasonable to assume that with the lower lake levels that I should be sticking to the west end of the lake even later into the winter this year? I'm a total newbie here, so I greatly appreciate the video!!!

No definitely not I would still try the North Shore about 2 miles east of the Dam... also the Juniper Point area especially when the water temperatures are down in January through March.
@darren35896 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks so much! And I appreciate the quick reply!
@TroutWest6 жыл бұрын
Mainly I would stick to the dam until temps drop quite a bit though. From the dam 1 mile East... Then as they drop you can go further east. If you don't get a bite within an hour you are in the wrong spot

Thanks! You seem very knowledgeable about the lake... Do you know of a good spot to fish (for trout) and car camp close by, say 10-30 feet away? I think I saw a pic of an RV area like this but a non-RV would be ideal.
@TroutWest6 жыл бұрын
There are none... not in Big Bear. The closest would be South Fork Campground off the 38
@joapps81356 жыл бұрын
Urban Outdoorsman Thanks. Im about to watch your Silverwood Lake video :) Any spots in socal that youre aware of? I want to plan a camping/fishing trip where 3-4 SUVs can park near shore, set up tarps and bug nets over the SUVs, and soak bait relatively nearby like a few feet away while relaxing on some beach chair recliners. Your vast knowledge of socal lakes and rivers would be appreciated!
@TroutWest6 жыл бұрын
There's nothing like that in SoCal really.. the closest would be the Owens river from Lone Pine North, you can camp along it and do all what you're looking to do. North of that you'd have to go to Bishop Creek Canyon, there are campgrounds. IF you want to striper fish you'd have to go to Lake Mead or Pyramid.

Gonna go up there with the kiddos this weekend. Would you fish the damn area or north shore? Also I remember fishing for carp a while back and it was wide open at windy point...this still the case? Also would love the secret tip on the juniper point :)
@TroutWest6 жыл бұрын
I fished the North shore near the old greys landing last weekend and it was pretty slow. I caught one nice fish right at sunrise. That's it. It's possible the winds the night before messed up the bite, I fished juniper point that same day and it was slow there too. I think the fish were closed down for the day. I'd still target the north shore.. you can go there for a bit, and if nothing for a few hours witch up toward the dam. Just don't case too far out at either place. My buddy landed a 6lb carp on the north shore of BBL last weekend

@TroutWest7 жыл бұрын
Perris is a tough one right now, they are doing construction on the lake so the water level has been kept down. That means no trout plants. Only Bluegill ,crappie and bass action near the marina docks. That's your best bet. Use real baits like worms and anchovies.

What's the smallie situation. I know they're unicorns when you catch them. Carp devastate Northern and smallie beds. I actually am thinking about getting into bowfishing. When I go the I see monster carp everywhere from my bass boat. If really love to see the smallie population flourish there. Kill carp and make local fertilizer. Hell I'd start a drive for smallie planting up there. We have them down the hill at DVL. I lived up in Fresno when Fish and Game took off the size limit off of smallies at Shaver Lake. 3 Bass clubs caught hundreds. I got a whole bunch too while fishing with smallie candy (Crickets) All the fish were taken to the rearing ponds before DVL opened the pipeline. Hey did I tell you I love smallies??? 🤣🤣
@TroutWest2 жыл бұрын
The smallmouth population is doing very well, people don't target them a lot because they are fairly elusive. If you figured them out, you'd catch a lot. I catch them from time to time on spoons near shore at the dam, but very rarely. Usually once a year... maybe

There is no private shoreline on big bear lake!!!! This is not true. You are LEGALLY allowed to access all of the shoreline as long as you don't have to cross fences due to say high water after a heavy winter. But like as of now with the water so low, you can access any point without jumping any fences. But no one owns the shoreline. This is fact
