Absolutely excellent in all ways! I've lived a few short miles all my 70+ years from the field this was found. My sister-in-law's family owned adjoining land and this story is legend! For many years we ran a Romano-British re-enactment/living history group in the area. Also did work for local archaeology units, museums and historic sites of this period. There is SO much Romano-British history on the Fen Edge that I could just go on and on. Happy days ! Thanks Nick- Teresa, Cambs/Suffolk border.

That is amazing Teresa. It is quite a story that certainly put Mildenhall on the world map. I live on the other side of the country but maybe next year we will make a trip over and visit the area where it all happened. Thanks Nick.

@@Trickynickymarts oh, I'm a looongtime Wodehouse fan - another set of books I picked up around 12 or so. I just discovered your channel, and I'm looking forward to listening to them. I really loved the Fry and Laurie series - tremendous casting. Particularly Claude and Eustace, I thought. Poor Bertie.

@@Trickynickymarts - The music was nice and tastefully done, but it's more common in KZbin videos than in audiobooks. A lot of people are anxious for the story to start and continue; but musical segments also have a tendency to wake people up if they are using books to get to sleep. (And yes, a book has to be interesting to get people to fall asleep, although not quite as interesting as a thriller.) It's funny how audiobook fashions have progressed.

The Saturday Evening Post was the most high-paying magazine market in the US, back when Dahl wrote this and for many decades afterward. So half of that kind of money was a pretty good deal, and the exchange rate of UK to US money back then would have made it really good. No wonder Dahl could live on two short stories a year, if he was already selling to the Saturday Evening Post.

Mildenhall is very familiar to me (as it would be to anyone who was in The US Air Force for any length of time), but I was not aware this story until now. I spent many months in and around the base back in the 80's and 90's, probably very near to where the treasure was discovered.
@Trickynickymarts3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and the base is still there after a decision to close it a few years ago was reversed. Come back to the UK again and you can see the treasure in the British Museum! Or replicas at Mildenhall's very own museum. Thanks.

@markcynic8084 жыл бұрын
Ford wouldn't speak to Dahl, and so was someone he didn't know in any way. With only the village idiot, Butcher, to rely on, the story was written from a biased viewpoint and owes much to fiction.
