Thanks for doing this Lewis, so hard to find stories for kids to just sit and listen to. It's really important for children to just sit quietly, it's very much missing in society today. My son (7) has thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Roald Dahl stories, he's not much of a reader but these have given him a reason to want to read. I don't think it'll ever be his favourite thing to do but at least this way he's not missing out.

According to the British inflation calculator, £20 in 1935 is worth £1,431.75 today Since there is no mention as to the date of his first winnings, if I suppose this happens 20 years after the date in the notebook, then, Henry’s first win (and throw away over his balcony) of £6,600 in 1955, that would be worth £174,301.77 in 2020. No wonder the crowd down below were truly amazed at how valuable the banknotes were!
@lewiskirk82894 жыл бұрын
What an interesting bit of information! Thanks for looking into this for us. Roald Dahl does allude to their value in the story when he says something like, 'many people had never seen a £20 note before', but of course he could never have been as detailed as your inflation information. Thanks again.
@Norfolk2504 жыл бұрын
I forgot to include that £174,301.77 divided by £20 is £8,715.09 Of course, in the book he read - it is 20 years earlier, so I had to look into it....and £6,600 in 1935 (earlier I calculated it at 1955) is worth £472,478.38 today ...divided by 20, that £20.00 would be worth £23,623.92 today..... so, imagine (dumbfounded expression on my own face right now!), if one recipient had received theirs 20 years earlier, and kept their note in a frame, and passed it down through the family, today, that note would be worth a staggering ££23,623.92 at 12:02 AM August 07 2020. I have to mention, that during the lockdown, when all the smaller and medium sized shoppes in my downtown were closed here in Guelph, Ontario, that enormous money-grabber big box store based in the states starting with the letter ‘w’ was allowed to stay open because they had food. Countless Canadians shopped there, and they bought EHHHHHHHHverything, instead of just food ~ not giving a rat’s behind about the national/local economy. I would imagine that this time next year, our canadian dollar will be worth about $0.10. What a heartbreaking pill to swallow.

By the way, Emhrat Khan is not a Hindu name, but Muslim indeed..

Looks like he introduced himself as hindu to avoid criticism as he was just stealing some knowledge for personal gain. That guilt of misusing yogic power killed him.

The story tells us right at the beginning that Henry is 41 which isn't a youngster, and that he is also 6 feet 2 inches which is very tall. When the policeman questions Henry he calls him a "young" idiot and also a "little" twerp which also seems a bit out of 'cinque' with the picture Dahl is painting here. Just an observation. ✌️👋
