Winter Truck Camping in Alaska with No Heater

Hey Maria,I’ve been watching you for a while, Past three years. You’re going to have to put a engine block heater on your motor. The diesel in cold weather can be a real problem. If it gets too cold just FYI please look into this before you go too much further north it’s pretty simple to do and then plug your Jackery into it at night. couple more items get an actual hot water bottle with a white mouth. They’re made out of rubber and designed for hot water then wrap it in a soft microfiber blanket. Also a 12 V heating blanket won’t work as well but it does help if you get a quality one and or get a diesel heater at night sleep below not up top keep as much heat contained down below. Get yourself a satellite phone. If you do not have one yet you’re going to need it we’re going please keep the blue on a leash out there because of the potential for him being at risk to predation, important note, don’t throw rocks at you frozen water areas if blue chases it, and it breaks and he falls through everyone is going to be in a world of hurt. When people say they put boiling water in a bottle for their sleeping bag it's usually like a nalgene or something a lot more substantial than the bottle you buy water in.

Using a drinking water bottle as a hot water bottle is dangerous. If the water is hot enough to be useful as a heat source, it's hot enough to burn you if it leaks. She needs to buy a proper hot water bottle!

Nope, use a Nalgene wide mouth water bottle, it's BPA free and will not melt when adding boiling water and probably won't leak into your sleeping bag. But I'd say diesel heater would be best.

Hi! I’m from England and I’m sorry if this is a stupid recommendation as I’ve never been to USA, but over here in the UK, you can buy “hot water bottles” (rubber bottles that can take boiling water and last a good few hours) in every shop or supermarket. It was a major oversight to not install a diesel heater before now. Water bottles & electric blankets will get you through the night but the reality is that you need a more permanent solution. You need to be able to have a reasonably warm cabin in addition to a warm bed. Not only for the comfort but for safety in case you or Blue get wet or sick.

Best way to keep warm is to change all of your clothes. Towel off all the sweat on yourself. Put on dry clothes, like thermal underwear, and dry socks.

Temps in Alaska can go to -50 below zero. Extremely dangerous and life threating. You need to leave or seek someone who has experience camping in these temperatures. I can not stress enough how dangerous this adventure is getting. You need start talking to the locals and have them evaluate your preparedness.

As some others have mentioned, use a nalgeon bottle with boiling water. I use this all the time and it works great! Good sleeping bag, a wool blanket for the pup and the nalgeon bottle are a perfect combination. Stay safe and safe travels!

On nights like that you should keep the top down and sleep on the bottom. It’s easier to maintain heat in a smaller space. Try it. I think you’ll notice a difference. Also the frost is probably due to the condensation inside from your’s and Blue’s breathing. The condensation is probably turning to frost.

Nalgene bottles can take boiling water. Luke at the Outdoor Boys yt channel is in Alaska and he always uses a nalgene of hot or boiling water in his sleeping bag for warmth. He also uses the stick on heat packs for his sons when they are out camping. The condensation in your roof tent is normal. It's going to freeze and crystalize because there's nowhere for it to go.

As a Scout Leader back 1980-1995. We taught our Scouts to strip off all their clothes they wore during the day. (I mean everthing) Put on fresh PJ or underwear. I used a candle to warm up my tent. As some one mention a smaller area is easier to warm up. We cooked outside as mosture from the cooking will coat the walls plus get into the sleeping gear. I've gone camping in -40 F and I'm now 74. I survived

You need a diesel heater. Warm dry air! The drying effect also helps reduce any odour issues. Side benefit, it’ll keep your windows frost free too! Oh and you can get a split charging system installed so the car charges your Jackery too while on the go. Minimises the dependency on solar alone.

As one who cannot stand the cold (we are only in the beginning of November in Western Washington), I wear like 5 layers in a small RV with no insultation. I applaud you for your courage on night one but relieved for the electric blanket on night 2......draining battery not withstanding. Try a large heating pad inside your sleeping bag instead of the blanket. Takes less power keeps the inside of you bag warm, and most will turn off after a few hours. If you get cold, just turn it back on. Happy trails.

I was getting by with a negative 25 sleeping bag when my diesel heater was broken… but there is nothing better than a diesel heater. My heater is now fixed and I feel like I’m living like a king again. They’re fuel efficient and no condensation.

You may want to keep the top down smaller space to heat. you’ll have a smaller space to heat. I’ve lived in Yellowknife and northern Ontario. Also hot water bottles or 12v electric blanket. Love mine.

I used to have a pop-up camper and in extremely cold weather I would not pop it up (at least while sleeping) to minimize the area to keep heated. Also, the canvas was not the best insulator. Up in the day, to catch the heat of the sun, but down at night to not freeze.

I put my heated blanked UNDER me. Heat rises and with a nice 0 degree bag/quilt on top it traps the heat from the blanket. I have a super old one that pulls about 93W until its up to temps and then it only pulls between 5-9W. It really is the solution if you have enough battery power. Safe travels!

You could charge the Jackery while you are driving if you have a proper size inverter installed. And although it may seem counterproductive, leave a vent open for the moisture to escape your sleep space. It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough. The highest vent is the best one to crack open. A real wool blanket could save your life. Like an old military surplus style. Just make sure it is at least 80% wool or more. If you have never had one you will be super glad to have tried one.

My 0,02€ on staying warm: buy a real winter sleeping bag. Get some ventilation going to reduce moisture (this will make your tent a bit colder, but with a good sleeping bag it's not going to be a problem). Make sure Blue gets his share of warmth. And, if it gets really cold, keep the tent down and sleep downstairs. That tent is probably the least insulated part of your rig when it's up. Alternatively, get a heat source that's vented outside of the car, to avoid moisture buildup. You're getting enough as it is, with you and Blue breathing, plus all the cooking you're doing inside the car. Just burning propane / butane produces quite a bit of water vapor. Last but not least, thank you for your videos!

Backpackers use Nalgene, wide mouth bottles. Easier to fill AND can take boiling water. They also put them in a wool sock or wrap them in a piece of clothing so that they don't burn you and they hold and release the heat longer. Just make SURE that they are TIGHTLY sealed or all of your bedding will be wet and wet kills in those temperatures.

If you’re going into a cold weather climate, you’re going to quickly find out that fuel is going to be your best friend when it comes to staying warm. Have you thought about installing a diesel heater in your truck? I’ve seen a lot of van builds that incorporate them into their design. You can have it run off Poe’s diesel tank. If you’re really going into Arctic temperatures, your biggest issue is going to be whether Poe can operate in it. It gets so cold up there that truck drivers on those routes don’t shut off their engines because if they do they’ll freeze.

That’s my concern. Poe starting in the morning. I’m from AK. 38 years until We left to travel full time. The cold is real. A possible help would be to have a rank heater installed, IF, you have enough portable Jackery power to run it. Also a battery heater, IF, you have enough to run it. But, in short, you may need to run Poe all night to insure start in morning and provide heat.

@@milesandmemoriesonthebackr8244 From what I can tell, she's almost entirely dependent on electric heating (or at least needs it to augment whatever other heating she might have), with a very small solar array. She's literally not prepared. It takes orders of magnitude more energy for heating once the temperature starts dropping, and even geography itself can mean crazy cold temps in certain areas. Like if she breaks down, she's done. Even with a satellite phone, rescue wouldn't be able to get to her quick enough.

You can't expect to stay warm in a truck without a consistent heat source. The canvas held moisture from your breath and froze. No insulation value in canvas. Probably better off sleeping in the truck because it's a smaller space. Gonna be a long winter if you don't come up with a reliable solution

Ria, FYI the bottle needed to warm up your sleeping bag should be what you use for hiking with NO leaks! Also, body warmers are designed to be applied to the body.

Hi, I've done a lot of winter tent and tarp camping; a few tricks: 1- like it said below, adding boiling water in Nalgene bottle works great; 2- hand and body warmers are also good; 3- BigBlue and Rechargeable Hand Warmer are great too and easy to charge; and finally 4- one or two UCO Original Candle Lantern running overnight will help to reduce inside condensation - note crack some windows to circulate the air and reduce carbon monoxide buildup. These days in my Alu-cab tent, I use a Portable Diesel Air Heater by Planar Heaters, I use some of my truck diesel to run it, its DC power consumption is lower than an electric blanket and because the unit is left outside, I use a Python Adjustable Cable Lock to keep 'sticky fingers' away of my heater and morning surprises. Out of the 500+ comments, I hope you see this and it makes your Arctic/winter camping more enjoyable.

A small suggestion i have is that you could wrap yourself in the heated blankie and take it inside the sleeping bag where its warmth would be trapped. It could help with the power draw as well.

Hi! I’ve seen other nomads lay on top of the heated blanket, and use their sleeping bag to catch the heat. That way you can use the blanket on the lowest setting -it’ll pull less wattage. Also, you can always charge your battery bank using your 12V outlet while you’re driving (I’m sure you know that already) just gotta create an extension cord long enough to get from the front to the back.

That's just really really slow. A regular battery either lead or a heated lithium. Then a DC-DC charger so it auto charges when engine is running.

Warm water bottles work for about 4 hours in a normal weather(you can also wrap a towel around it to keep the heat longer, but wool works best{wool everything❄️♾️). I know cuz I raised some kittens and they really need to be warm at all times the first 4-5 weeks

You need a resuable plastic waterbottle that can actually withstand boiling water, better yet a flat hot water bottle (the type you get for period cramps or for when your sick) would be ideal!!!

Put heated blanket under you on lowest setting so the heat passes threw you and heats inside sleeping bag … trust me it works better that way . If its ontop of you the heat rises and ya dont heat your core as well👍

I can tell you from experience that your lucky it’s still warm this late in the year. Normally it’s freezing and heavy snow. Alaska has 9 months of winter and depending where you are it can get severely cold. I was a cold weather survival instructor in the Army there.

You need a proper hot water bottle that isn't going to leak or burst if you get your bedding wet that will be another problem walmart or any drug store has them they are not expensive. Be careful of frost bite I had a mild situation and it took a lot of time to heal with serious medication and health support .

Electric blankets work best if you put them inside the sleeping bag and then put a heavier blanket or quilt on top of the electric blanket or even on top of the sleeping bag. You'll feel the heat more which means you could use a lower setting.

Boiling water, yes. Thin disposable water bottle, no. You need a hard side Nalgene type bottle. Put it in a thick wool sock and it will keep you toasty in your sleeping bag all or most of the night. In the morning, you’ll have warmish water to cook or wash or brush with.

As others mentioned - you gotta use a Nalgene. They’ll keep the water warmer for longer too. Also, keep blue leashed bc the threat of bears are real. Finally, get a highly technical, down sleeping bag designed for subzero temps. You can still keep the double for blue and he’s got a lot of fur so that’s helpful for him, but a technical sleeping isn’t going to come in a double.

I bought a 40 watt electric underblanket for winter camping. It's safe to leave on low all night, won't drain your power bank (I only have a tiny GoLabs one and I can warm up the bed on high before I climb in for 3 nights as well as do lights etc). I use a double layer Sherpa fleece blanket which really traps the heat - it was quite cheap from Mountain Warehouse (I'm in Wales in the UK). Love your adventures! My dream is to visit Alaska. I've done Norway & Finnish Lapland, saw the Aurora but to see it in Alaska would be amazing! Stay safe & warm, and have an awesome trip xx

You need to get a large stainless steel bottle, put boiling water in it, put it in a sock (so you don’t burn yourself) and put that in your sleeping bag. A couple of them work great. Put on down by your feet and the other one next to your core. It works great. Another thing to remember about Alaskan winters is that it’s an extremely dry cold so the condensation usually isn’t quite as bad.

When using an electric blanket, sandwich the blanket with a sheet or thin blanket on bottom and a quilt and or a blanket on top which traps in the heat. More efficient. Great vid!!! Happy trails.

you can wrap towels or clothing around the bottles so that they retain the heat longer and release it slower. By morning you can still feel the bottles are warmish instead of stone cold.

Just a thought about the heating blanket. Maybe you could use a timer switch so it doesn't heat all night but heats up every hour or two. Not sure that will help because heating up probably takes the most electricity, but might be worth a try. Also, couldn't you switch off the fridge when you are in freezing temperatures?

Maria , suggestion number 3 : keep an empty 1 gallon coffee can . If your rig has trouble starting from the diesel jelling up , put a mixture of gas and diesel, about an inch in the bottom , have a long handle to push and or pule it after lite under the oil pan of your rig , this is dangerous and use only as a last resort !!!! The heat will warm up the engine block and oil pan and your fuel lines…. You should carry long handle shovel and a spool of bailing wire to help jerry-rig up contraptions like described above !!! Be Safe !!!!

As others have said, you need a Nalgene bottle or similar which can handle the boiling water. Outdoor Boys uses them all of the time in Alaska to stay warm in his sleeping bag using boiling water. Condensation will continue to accumulate without some sort of ventilation and heat source. Diesel heater should do the trick.

Amazon has several, relatively cheap diesel fuel heaters that are very efficient, very small, between $100 to $130, as a precaution buy a few carbon monoxide detectors as back up to protect your space. You will never belive you didn't have one after the easy istall.

Yum, I LOVE that you guys are cold weather camping - I want to do more of that myself! My thought is to use the propane heater just to take the snap out of the air when you tuck in and wake up - then use the Nalgenes with hot water or hot water bottles that other folks suggested, plus a puffy down blanket - that makes a huge difference for me! Also, thick wool socks and a balaclava for your face if that gets cold. Also, a smaller space is easier to keep warm, so I second what folks have said about sleeping downstairs for now. My cold weather trick is to use a 12v heating pad, plugged into my Jackery. I highly recommend it. I keep it on low and it comes on and off thru the night. it doesn't use as much power as the 12v blanket. I put at my feet inside my sleeping bag.

Hey, you are awesome at making content! If you want to stay warm, forget about water and use sand instead. Sand is like a superheater that can last for hours and hours. You can put some sand in a bag or a metal bottle and heat it up to a very high temperature. But be careful, don’t burn yourself! Sand can get really hot, hotter than water. And as a road warrior, you should always have some metal water bottles with you. They are handy for drinking, cooking, and heating. Also, I noticed that your bed area has a lot of air coming in. That’s not good for keeping cozy. You should try to add another layer inside or pull a tarp over it at night. That will block the wind and keep you snug. The tarp can also be a backup cover in case your van roof leaks during your amazing adventures.

You need a Chinese 5kw diesel heater. Screw 2 x 2x6 blockes to the bottom, Leave it outside and run the heat pipe into a window and stuff around with a blanket. Super warm . Burns about 2 liters in 10 hrs on full and maybe 16 hrs on low

4:38 My best guess at what kind of track this is... is a moose. It's hard to say for sure because, the gravel is crumbly and it didn't make a very distinct shape. It looks like possibly this is both a front and a back hoof that landed in almost the same spot. Also, you're right next to the water there and moose love to hang out near bodies of water but, again I could be wrong. If you had more than this one track to look at the story would become clear because, you could look at the distance between the tracks and you would have a better idea whether or not this is indeed a moose. 🙂

As someone who also has no heat in his truck, i can tell you that electric blankets are fantastic to keep warm. Mine has a timer on it, so i set it long enough for it to get nice and warm, then shut off so it doesn't drain my solar battery dry. Also, you're likely to always have that frost inside, dogs create a lot of moisture in the air with their breath. I had no problems with this until after i got a dog. Keeping a window cracked helps, but doesn't 100% stop this. Diesel heaters will dry the air out though, if you were to use one of these. While i dont have one in my truck, I used to use one in my Semi, they dry the air out and keep things pretty toasty. As someone else stated, you will likely want an engine block heater going into the north, and possibly a battery blanket, or battery heater to prevent possible issues with the extreme cold.
