Roaming The Outback

5 жыл бұрын

Join the journey as I uncover Currawinya's secrets, in part 3 I camp at Myninya waterhole, explore the Boorara Woolshed ruins, drive the Werewilka Creek Circuit, bushwalk at Budjiti Lookout and The Granites, discover a portable steam engine, and visit the Currawinya Woolshed and Bilby display. A 13 Day Epic Adventure exploring Currawinya National Park in outback Queensland.
The Myninya waterhole bush camping area is the remotest campsite in the park, with 4x4 caravans not recommended. Cold showers are provided. Plenty of space to camp quietly.
The Boorara Woolshed ruins are interesting to explore, with various buildings falling into disrepair. Some areas are restricted access for your safety.
Werewilka Creek Circuit is a 4x4 track driving a sandy/claypan area with low lying vegetation. An easy afternoon drive if you have time.
Budjiti Lookout is an easy couple hundred metre walk offering 360 degree views of the surrounding country. Well worth the stop. The Granites are an impressive outcrop unlike anything else you've seen in Currawinya.
The Currawinya Woolshed is one of the best preserved traditional woolsheds I have visited, with everything in situ. A display about the Bilby fence project is out the front explaining the attempts of Parks to reintroduce the Bilby into a fenced off area.
Join me in part 3 for my discoveries of what Currawinya has to offer the outback traveller.

@@RoamingTheOutback my uncle ran the Port Elliot bakery over 50 years ago and it was identical to that only slightly larger which was originally wood fired then he changed over to oil. I googled kerosene fridges and the kerosene heats ammonia which goes through the pipes and condenses. A friend of mine had one in his shack on the Coorong

Another great video Brett.. Especially love the opening scene with your commentary with the birds and music overlay.. very professional production. The amount of time you are spending on setting up the cameras, walking/driving past for the cutaways is fantastic, plus the way in which you are sharing the history of the places visited.. inspiring!

Flies! Everyone one else seems to have mentioned the important stuff. The fridges, the Australian invented shearing gear, much of it still used today! The Press & Classing table (an early farming life for me.!) Friggin Flies! Loved seeing the traction engine there. Surprisingly many did make it out bush as did a lot of those single cylinder engines & yes, they ran lots of equipment too! We had a 32 Volt lighting plant that ran the "Modern" thing we where lucky enough to have. Flies!! Did I Mention the Bloody Flies!!!..... you are better than me!! They Drive me NUTS!!!!

Really interesting history. Just like here in the U.S. southwest dry desert they thought cattle ranching was a good thing despite lack of water and limited forage. Seems similar to raising sheep or cattle in similar regions in Australia. Your editing is always getting better and better, great video - thank you!

Brett, grab a handful of eucalyptus leaves off a tree (green not dry) , scrunch them up in your hands and rub the leaves over your hat and clothes then rub the leaves over your face and neck. This will keep the flies from landing on you.

1) Brett - "Sunbeam Over Head" gear. A company that made everything in Australia. 2) I couldn't help but notice the brand new John Deer with the grader attachment. Hmm. Must have some park funding :-) 3) The restricted areas are full of Asbestos - for sure. And people love souvenirs unfortunately.... 4) We still have a working Kerosene fridge. Works by the physical principal of heat exchange. Burning hydrocarbons to keep the beer cool. Who would have thought ? 5) That skull looked like a draft horse skull. Thicker bottom jaw. Not sure though. 6) Those bottles were probably the road grading crew back in the sixties. Graziers and drovers didn't have the money nor means to carry beer whilst working generally. My money is on road crew. 7) Maybe the Bower bird likes shooting ?? 8) That old steam engine would have been used to pump water since it's located on the bank of a creek / lagoon. 9) That table is called a Skirting Table and they are now days round and spin. Before we got a round one we had exactly the same square wooden skirting table. We still have our old over head gear and wooden skirting table. And our wool press and scales is also the same. 10) Kids were kept away from shearing sheds because the engine driving the main belt and over head gear along with the lever and gears of the wool press are dangerous places for kids. And shearers don't like little kids getting in the way. Nostalgic tour. I must have lanolin in my veins.... A familiar smell. Thanks :-)

@adelarsen9776
@adelarsen9776 5 жыл бұрын
Biting flies, horse flies, March flies won't go near you with DEET. But for ordinary house flies I just ignore them. Let them stay on your back - less on your face. You could try a fly mesh over your hat. Flies are something you have to put up with. No chemicals for fly repellent are worth putting on your skin. Maybe Brett knows a way. We just let them drive us mad then we sit around and laugh about it. You've got to have humour in the bush.
