Your ignition failure brought to mind an identical problem to our 80 Series Landcruiser. We stopped at the entry to a Barossa Valley, SA caravan park and ignition failed. We had it repaired and was advised it was because I had too many keys on the car’s key ring. Years of corrugated drives had taken their toll as keys bounced around. So now it’s just the one key. Oh - no I wouldn’t have had a clue to fix it.

Yep, totally agree with your sentiments re older vehicles. I've recently updated to a 1990 diesel Landcruiser, newest 4by I've ever owned lol. In 40 years of outback travel I've had two minor electrical issues out bush, both resolved with not much more than screwdriver and pliers and some common sense applied after a bit of head scratching. Love your blog and to be honest I like the longer format, takes us on a journey rather than show a few highlights. Good stuff. I'm over the V8 turbo diesel rooster tailing its way over the Simpson Desert dunes garbage, with viewers complimenting the exhaust sound. Toy Boys. You have an easy relaxed style much more suited to serious outback travel.

Gday cobba. Streuth you're havin a hard run mate. Keep your chin up, these things are sent to try us. I reckon your correct, these things do happen for a reason. Though you you won't know it till its time. I drive a dirty ol D1 for the same reasons you drive the classic Deefa, 'self reliance',. That power problem with the Engel is a real but scratcher. It actually sounds like a bum circuit between the power supply an the fridges motor... not disengaging. If you hard wire in the 'starter' buttons, reinstall the column lock and add a power disconnect no one will be able to take your truck for a joy ride. Any who mate. Love your channel. Peace!

Great video. Fully subscribe to your views about being able to fix the Land Rover. I’m building up a 1972 Series 3 Carawagon for a long camping trip, around Europe, and then if all goes well further afield. Getting it re-chassied, attending to all the mechanicals, and keeping the inside pretty much stock to avoid increasing the Wright too much. And the wiring on the Series 3 is even simpler than the Defender. Taking a few electrical spares, connectors and such is a great idea.

I take what I believed to be a reasonably comprehensive kit to do repairs if I have issues, thanks to you Brett I’m reassessing it, definately need to put in more stuff to repair what I call “ show stoppers “ I drive a 2007 Prado and do most of jobs to it so “I know my vehicle”. Totally agree with you about vehicles in the bush, the modern vehicles basically aren’t designed for harsh outback driving. As for your Landy, probably one of the better vehicles for what you do, I’ve an uncle that owns a 1970:Land Rover, in his words “ you couldn’t kill it with a cannon”, all vehicles have issues but take into account where you go, the old Landy ain’t to bad.. I stumbled upon this channel a few weeks ago, I think it was on the Simpson where Brett was having to wire up his exhaust, as a family were hooked, no over the top rubbish just really good warts and all content..as I’ve stated before, it’s the best over landing channels by a long shot.

Sounds like your having a bit of a bad trott, but as long as you wake up every morning in the greatest place in the world life is good, as for your ignition switch, had the same problem with a truck some years ago, ended up rigging a 3 switch system, which requires the switches to be in certain positions before the engine turns over, i.e 1 switch up, 2 switches down - never had any problems and saved heaps. Don't give up, your doing what you want everyday, sh*t happens but it can only get better. Happy travels old mate

Yes,, slow down, relax. Fuel is the biggest cost. If your not moving your saving money. Don't worry about the switch, a hidden temporary switch will do the job and you can lock the vehicle anyway! If the Engle is constantly running it could be the thermostat, it may be worth having a look and check the wires while you are sitting around camp. Good luck!

Love your videos mate. I also have a love affair with British cars, specifically the Triumph TR8. I can forgive it’s terrible build quality because it’s such a character-full car and I love them! Your comments about knowing how to fix modern Japanese 4WDs tho, I can see where you’re coming from they are seriously complex. But, they just don’t break down, so I don’t need to know how the computer works! The switches and electrics mostly are Bulletproof. The ignition switch just doesn’t fall apart. They are reliable and just work. Good on you for using a car you know well and love, but for outback travel where reliability can be something that can save you life, I’ll go Jap. BTW old Toyotas are a good way to go if you want a simple system where there are no computers, but the components are well designed and electrical problems are easy to troubleshoot. Keep up the videos mate, awesome stuff.

@@RoamingTheOutback Fresh electrical rant is on sudden battery death; I used to use a heavy discharge battery tester every few months ( the old resistor and observe the Voltmeter behaviour type ) but after a completely sudden 'healthy' battery demise I gave that up - fine one minute and DEAD the next, probably due to internal connection failure? I also used to log brake disc and pad thickness against miles driven, but probably better invest my time now watching KZbin!

Another good reason to have a older style 4wd for serious travel as less electrical problems to go wrong.Having said that your vehicle needs to be well maintained for those remote trips to start with.I drive a 86 model Patrol and would not change it for those types of travels. The Landy is also well known for it's off road capabilities so keeping it simple is the key I say.

Very interesting video Brett I really enjoyed watching that! Sorry about your fridge though. As for mechanical issues your not alone! Your right about certain parts not cut out for rough conditions though. A lot of land rover parts you never quite know if it's good quality or not.. here in Kenya a lot of land rover defender owners are wary of buying new parts and often prefer looking around for good second hand parts as they often last a lot longer than a new part! If ever you come to the States . You have an invitation to check out my 1957 series 1 diesel and my series 2A 109" diesel station wagon. I just repowered the old 109 from the disaster 2.25 Land Rover diesel. to a Deutz air cooled 5 cylinder diesel. There's still a few bugs that needs to be worked out. It seems to be working out good so far. The radiator has been removed to fit the Deutz motor. Along with the engine all the LUCAS electric has been replaced with Delco(General Motors components) . The old series 1 electric has been replaced with the same GM system too. I'll try to figure out how to send some photos to you. You keep your journeys and adventures safe and fun. God bless. Greetings from Florida and The United States of America.

Hi Bret I am building a 110 Santana defender. Have tried to get an alu cab, or expedition center pop up, but they won’t deal with me. So have to go bundutec stuff.

Ahh yes, been there. It's testing when small BS issues occur. Enjoy the rest of your journey. Don't miss Cuttaburra Crossing and Lake Machattie whilst in the Diamantina Shire. The best bird watching in Australia. Explore along the water courses and creeks as well.

Is the ignition switch a Lucas? Hmmm. Owning a Landrover must be a love affair!

The beeping sound after you turn the ignition/accessories off, is that the after market head unit doing the sound? My disco 1 does the same sound but I haven’t a clue as to what it is 😅

Yes its the stereo head unit. I think it's to remind me to remove the face for security.
