Another sciatica brother here. Wracked my back at 28 reaching into car trunk for a test instrument manual, spent two weeks flat on my back using as few drugs as possible. Ended up at a sports therapist PT and got it handled through exercises. Messed up again about 10 years later, spent 6 months standing up except for sleeping and lost the feeling in most of my left foot. I'm 70 now, still do my exercises and still have two tingling toes on my left foot. I understand the stabbing pain and the depression, walking was the only thing that made me feel better. Please see a really good doctor, avoid surgery if possible, do the exercises regularly, keep ahead of trouble curve and you'll do great! (I did 50 miles in 48 hours on the PCT a couple of summers ago entirely pain free, planning a couple of week-long trips this year. You can beat this sciatica and hit old age healthy.)

Bryce! I feel you brother. In 2021 I hiked a 600 mile thruhike of the GDT and in 22’ I ran 3 ultra marathons - was in the shape of my life. 2023 I had 3 back surgeries due to herniated discs forcing me on the sidelines. 2024 is a super slow recovery but I’m nowhere near where i want to be. One day at a time pal. 🙏🏼 You can’t overdose on compassion 😊

Just “found” you via the OV outing with the KZbinrs, specifically Eric Hanson, sorry. I so appreciate your honesty through this hike. As an old lady hiker, I have slogged along without saying anything…it is Type 2-3 fun and I never tell either. I never regret going either. I hope your injury has been resolved!

Ah, I battled that last summer. Was soooo depressed. Could not even walk for awhile, then graduated to hiking sticks and shopping carts. Good now, but with intense PT always. Once I backpacked with 4 broken ribs. Didn’t know that on trail. Intense pain. Cowboy camped because I could not set up a tent. Great video.

Bryce I blew out a disc too a while back. This helped. I bought a used walker at a thrift store. I suspend myself with my arms and let my body hang. The one I have is heavy duty and has front wheels which surprisingly doesn’t affects stability. Nice that I can fold and put away when I am done exercising.

I have sciatica too but mine is caused by the piriformis muscle. Going uphill for me and carrying weight is a hige trigger for it, which is not conducive with my love of backpacking. I am surprised you could still walk. Its so painful!!

Great video, I can't believe Miranda has never heard of you! I have heard of nearly everyone in this video as I spend more time watching this content than actually backpacking. Have you tried a cork/lacross ball on your piriformis muscle? That seems to relieve a little siatica pain for me. Doing exercises like RDLs have helped strengthen my posterior chain which seems to reduce the flare ups. The flare ups seems to arise, in my case, from poor posture and form when reaching and bending over for things. Anyways, I'm no doctor but thought I'd share what I noticed about similar pain I experience. Impressed you kept it to yourself as I find myself whining in those moments!

I've had that sciatic nerve pinch now going on for four days now ((probably 30 years when i lift something or bend the wrong way)). it usually ends by day four or five. Probably hereditary. All of Our Family Members deal with it. Yours' might be more severe though.

Great video! And so sorry to hear you’re a fellow sciatica sufferer. I’m still not backpacking and it’s taken several months to get to a 4 mile walk without pain. I’m sure you’ve heard it all, but if not, maybe try some of Brian Carrol’s and Stu McGills videos. The Back Mechanic by McGill changed everything for me. Everyone is different though and I hope you find a solution to hike pain free again! I will admit seeing you bending over in the video hurt me a lot. Flexion is no bueno for a lot of us. Good luck and thanks for the vid!

Don't go to a Chiro to get your disc herniation looked at. There's a surgeon called Dr. Deuk here on KZbin. At least watch his testimonials and figure out your next step. I have multiple disc issues and I feel your pain (literally). Btw, people as young as 20 have this problem. Sounds like SI joint is pinching something. Anyway, hope you're on the mend.
