Beast Machines is truly horrifying, I have no idea what possessed the designers to create some of those abominations, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt in particular. Like, what happened to proportions, what happened to their eyes, and why is everything so stretched out? I can't blame Megatron for wanting to wipe them out tbh😅

When I was a kid, my mother introduced me to the franchise. (She’s a fan, she grew up with it in the 80s) and she had all the DVDs. Even the Japanese shows. When she showed me beast wars she showed me the original show, then beast wars 2 and Neo. Then when I was like 8-9 I was going through our DVD drawer. I found behind everything wayyyy in the back of the cabinet a DVD caked in dust, untouched for years. That DVD was beast machines. I brought it to her, was like “what’s this transformers show” she picked it up. And washed over with dread. She looked at me and said “we can watch this, but before you ask. I don’t know why they look like that.” Child me had no idea what that meant, but I threw the DVD in our shitty DVD player. Then Optimus Primal came on screen in the DVD menu. I was like “is that Optimus?” She nodded at me. To which I said something along the lines of “is that why this DVD was covered in dust in the back?” She sighed, and said “yeah.” To this day I thank my mother for showing me Beast Wars 2 and Neo and not beast machines when I was a kid. God it fucking sucks. To anyone that reads this thanks for listening to my shitty story. Moral is, beast machines is hot shit.

Silverbolt was a (half) eagle in Beast Wars. In Beast Machines he was a condor. There's evidence that he was meant to be a griffin at one point but that the show decided to drop the mythical animals concept. That's why Savage Noble transforms between a dragon and a werewolf and why there was a unicorn in the season season toyline.

Beast machines was like leather face peeling victims skin off with a hot knife then modified it, thinking that it looks good. Silverbolt's beast mode was pure cringe, they turned him to an edgy character. Megatron was like emperor Palpatine with those mask that cover insane people's mouth like Hannibal lecter, but the mask goes allover the face, oh and you can't forget that time he was noble/that weird meat dragon thing.

I feel like biomechanical transformers is a really cool idea that could yield interesting designs. The idea of Bludgeon actually being some kind of warped cyber skeleton is cool as hell. The problem is that no matter how you slice it the idea of an organic transformer being twisted around into a new shape is horrific and the show doesn’t seem to realize it. I want to see a series where there’s a fringe group of zealots who are fully devoted to “upgrading” all cybertronians. Imagine the horror of seeing those abominations for the first time.

Yeah the only good thing this show did with any of them was make it so that Waspinator flew to Cybertron under his own power over the course of Millions of years and arrived just before the rest of them only to get immediately wrecked. That was great.

I actually like Blackarachnia's design. Not nearly as much as her original or Transmetal 2 designs, despite a much more feminine look, but I like it. She's pretty much what kept me watching Beast Machines. (And whodafuq thinks it had better animation than Beast Wars???😮😳🤯) Also, most pics of her are the Hasbro toy, the Takara toy, and some fanart...usually showing this one and the original one (no love for Transmetal 2?😑) Optimus Primal...ahhh, yesss. I don't give three shits about the fugly gorilla - it's marginally better than his first Transmetal gorilla design, which doesn't say much. Robot mode, however, is where I draw the line. No bullshit, the first time I saw that fuckery back in 1999, my 22 year old brain immediately said "wtf, he looks like Carl Winslow from Family Matters!!" To this day, I can't unsee it. Cheetor, poor Cheetor...yeah, nooo, his toys look much worse. Especially that large one. Like, wowsers...what kinda cheap dollar store crack were they smoking??? Also, idk...if they were able to cook up two different Transmutate toys (one was a con exclusive based on her character model, the other is a Generations Selects repaint of Paleotrex), they could pull anything they wanted to. I can imagine Takara doing a Binaltech/Alternity styled Botanica that's a retooling of Punch/Counterpunch...largely because I doubt Hasbro has that kinda brainpower to even just straight repaint Punch/Counterpunch and call it a Botanica day.

The animation was better, I can objectively see that it is more fluid, there are fewer errors, the effects are better, they have progressed since Beast Wars. It's just too bad they paired that with an Ugly Aesthetic. To be fair they could have done that but I was more arguing that the show made Botanica so impossible that that's just about the only thing they could have done.

FUN STORY on how i first encountered Beast Machines : when i first encountered beast machines, i didn't know it was a sequel . i only rented it ONCE from my local public library thinking it was Beast Wars because at the time TUBI didn't exist and my young 9 year old self really wanted to watch beast wars for the first time and OH BOY my 9 year old self felt it had its soul ripped out of its body when watching it, like dear god those designs are Pure Nightmare fuel . it took me 2 years later to actually watch beast wars and find out it was a sequel🤣

I actually think (like most people) that the Vehicons are rather cool designs. They're not the best in all of Transformers but they're definitely a vibe and quite different from the Autobots and Decepticons - which in this case is a good thing, unlike with the Bay films - because the Vehicons AREN'T the Autobots or Decepticons but rather their own unique thing.

I tried watching this show recently after checking out Beast Wars for the first time lately, fucking loved the OG Beast Wars and I got why people liked it, but when I went to Beast Machines, aside from the designs and the kinda stupid "biomechanical" idea and the "I am transformed" bullshit, I just checked out after like the 5th episode because they flat-out fucking bullied my boy Rattrap. They literally threw out like three seasons' worth of character development only for him and even all the other characters to an extant to throw out their fucking chance to save Cybertron. They're all like "Omg, rattrap is so fucking useless, we should abandon him" despite him playing some of the key roles in saving the FUCKING TIMELINE AND THEIR WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD and the bat emo motherfucker not even being a part of the group for a week, Blackarachnia knew damn well Rattrap was useful and helpful so much before they got to Cybertron and him being Cheetor's former superior and a mentor to a degree. They're basically like "he made one or two major fuck-ups so far after finally figuring out how to transform which he's been wanting to do since he got here and he's been tormented to shit over it, let's treat him like absolute dogshit like he's never been a contributor to the team, and not listen to his tip about us being able to fucking end Megatron and save our whole damn world" only for Rattrap to say "Well, fuck you all, then, I'm helping Megatron so I'm not so useless, don't listen to me, then". Idc what people say, if you enjoy the show you enjoy it, but making your characters horrible people to eachother isn't character development, they never got remotely that malicious in Beast Wars, it's just making your characters shitty people.

Yep, that's an infuriating one, and it's not EVEN the most infuriating episode of the show, wait till you see what they do to Rhinox, and Primal, and Silverbolt. The creators literally didn't know the show, they were hired because they'd never seen it before, and they weren't allowed to watch it because apparently some High Minded Moron Arteest with a Vision got put in charge, and they thought by forcing the writer to continue the story blind they'd make amazing art. The show sucks and it assassinates the characters.

@PerspectiveEnd I get what u mean, I think what I find appealing is like the smoothness and curves the models have as well as like the funky but fitting proportions, like if you were to get rid of excess details and make them look similar to either their original forms or transmetal forms in bot mode and beast mode they'd look much better and possibly cooler. I think another thing I like is that the proportions are reminiscent to TF Prime and Animated

I believe the reason why BEAST MACHINES didn't connect with a lot of people is due to these reasons: 1: It embarks on the after-effects of war. Meaning after you go through traumatizing events, killings, etc. It will mold you into becoming something else. Which, in most cases depressed and mad at the world. That happened in the series, and everyone was too severely depressed. You don't showcase these dark elements in a kids' show, especially every episode. The show was too mature for its audience. 2: The organic robot forms. Many BEAST WARS fans like myself didn't like the organic look of the transformers. I understood what the writers were going for. I/e Making the transformations look more HUMANOID, which correlates with the organic spectrum. But at the same time, it felt a bit weird, and at times they were not good to look at. Not just that, because of the organic forms, the transformers have no weapons (i.e., tech/guns, etc.) except for the limited organic powers such as shock, flight, and beam powers.

See that first part I don't agree with, because the show was actually written by someone who never watched any Transformers Media before. Hasbro specifically sought out someone who didn't know anything about transformers and forbid them from watching it because for some reason they had this absolutely MORONIC high minded Idea about the ART of having it come from a place of pure ignorance? It's the FUCKING dumbest thing I've ever heard. Anyways it can't be that this is really delving into the characters trauma, because the writer didn't know what the characters Trauma was. So I'd say that the main problem with this serries is actually that the writer just didn't know what they were writing about. I do agree with you on that Second Point though. It always BRUTALLY offended me as a Child when they just morphed into new bodies, rather than transforming. Transforming is awesome.

I actually rewatched this show not too long ago. I honestly liked Season 1, Primal's developing insanity made sense in the story and Cheetor taking command was good. Tankor/Rhinox added an interesting element to the plot, though the fact he had the same goal as Megatron was odd for dynamics and all that. I liked Jetstorm and Thrust was okay. Nightscream in terms of writing was...passable, he didn't really add too much but they did need new blood for the team. Though the organic Cybertron thing is likely true, BUT that would have been the case BEFORE the Quentessons arrived. The Autobots and Decepticons would have hardly cared for that planet for millions of years and suddenly it's a big deal to change it back. And then we get to Season 2...where everything I liked was thrown out the window (which means I despised it). Silverbolt was an abomination in every way, Primal and Cheetor's chain of command rivalry was gone, Botanica was just plain old stupid and had that needless romance with Rattrap, and Noble/Savage was insanely underused for what a big deal they made of him (and yeah, that wolf form makes no sense at all, it should have been something else reptilian). Obsidian and Strika were the only new elements I enjoyed, for a little while. They were decent until they were beaten, in one of the dumbest ways possible. Doesn't help the finale was kinda bleh.

I don't like what they did with Rhinox because it feels like the Exact Opposite of what he would ever do, it's not just not how he would act it's the literal opposite. Jetstorm is Great, a Shining ray of light in the Dark Seriousness of the show. Yeah some how they were just vended into space which shouldn't work when Obsidian can fly.

@@PerspectiveEnd That's fair. Though, the episode Dark Designs in Beast Wars *might* be used to play into that if you want to get technical. They at least did a fair amount of explaining to try and justify how he felt, even if it doesn't completely work, so I have to give them credit there instead of just saying "He's bad now". And, to be fair, if you were forced to watch as you did that kind of stuff for 6 months or so (I think that's how long it was), you might feel differently about everything.

I blame the first season on Marty Isenberg. He specifically directed the writers to not watch any Beast Wars before writing. That's why there are several continuity errors that they fix or explain away in the second season. SilverBolts brooding emo attitude was so dis-jarring. If anything he would be the redemptive hero trying to return to virtue, not pouting all the time, and certainly not shunning BlackArachnia. SilverBolts toy is easily one of the worst. Supposedly he's a condor. Rhinox/Tankor dying without redemption was bullshit. Also I don't think NightScream was ever supposed to be a female. He's Michael Jackson. Shamonna! Eh He!

You missed something about the show writing that was kind of a biggie: So, let's start back at last episode of beast wars. Megatron's god-playing abomination dinobot turned around and fucked him up BAD. This is because, in the words of Thrust, "you never should have used the sparks from Optimus' pals". So Megatron get his ass handed to him because he used sparks from somebody who doesn't like him, and be turns around and tries to conquer Cybertron doing EXACTLY THAT. Who was in the vehicon generals? Rhinox and silverbolt? Why?

My guy you are Fabricating some memories there. Dinobot's clone never raised a finger to Megatron. It's actually really lame. Megatron tells Dinobot 2 to kill a bunch of cavemen, Dinobot 2 turns around and say's "I have my honor." Megatron back hands him. And then he's just out of the fight and he sits there waiting to die in the crash. I fabricated the same memories when I first saw the show too.

The Bayverse designs at least have SOME merit of being cool to new Transformers fans. I could see how one could like Bayverse Prime, Bumblebee, or Jazz (who had the best design in my opinion). Beast Machines has NO merit. G1 fans hate em, Beast Wars fans hate em, new fans hate em, Bayverse fans hate em. I don't know who designed them, but please FIRE them. It'd be kind of interesting to see beast machines return in legacy, because with the arcee they basically took prime arcee but gave her a more G1 face, and I don't know if it works well for that, but I think that would work a lot better for someone like blackarachnia from beast machines, or especially rattrap, just give him a more beast wars looking face and actual legs, I think is design would be a lot better.

It is profound and philosophically rich on a level unparalleled in children’s entertainment from that era. Not only did it introduce legitimate spirituality into the world of TF, it also taught children to _question_ religious dogma. Like, Optimus Primal - my childhood hero - is out-and-out *wrong* and descends into fanaticism! And the story contends with the fallout. They don’t just sweep it under the rug. primal spends the rest of the series living in shame for his close-brush with war crimes. Meanwhile, Cheetor grows into a leader, completing his five season Bildungsroman. Instead for shallow black & white, good-vs-evil plabium, Beast Machines offered viewers a Kantian Dialectical that rewarded contemplation over mere consumption. What’s more, the series functions as a legitimate endpoint for the whole of Transformers lore. When Megatron swallows all the sparks, only for Primal to push him over the edge and into the core of Cybertron… every spark is in one place. E Pluribus Numbi. And from that singularity - in which Megatron actually achieves his goal - springs a technorganic reformatting that functions as a completion of Autobot prophecy - _til all are one_ indeed. HOWEVER, Silverbolt still looks stupid. And it makes no sense that he swapped out chivalrous knight aesthetics for a topknot and Samauri vibes.

To make a long opinion short, while I enjoyed the concepts and ideas of the show such as an organic Cybertron and a darker tone, I just think they were executed kinda poorly. I also don't like how most of the fun and personality that made Beast Wars so loveable for fans (myself included) is sadly toned down for Beast Machines. Also Rhinox. They did my boy dirty! I believe that the show has potential, but it couldn't completely live up to it because SOMEONE (lookin' at YOU, Didio) told the writers not to watch Beast Wars or any other Transformers media because he wanted to give Beast Machines a fresh start, which is an understandable idea, except for the fact that it's supposed to be a goddamn sequel. If that never happened, maybe fans would have looked at Beast Machines more favorably. However, regardless of what I just said, I respect your opinion. I also admire how positive and civil you are about Beast Machines. If you like it, that's perfectly fine with me. I just think that Beast Machines deserves another chance, like a remake in comic form or as an animated mini series. Also Rattrap. The guy needs a new face for his robot form. And some legs, dammit!
